  1. They're going to be very disappointed. I'd take Lackey and part of his contract because he's never pitched in the NL. Besides, I don't think Epstein would want to come over if we gave away our 2 best players.
  2. I wonder if even Todd Zeile remembers his brief stint with the Cubs.
  3. These guys are more epic fails than obscurities. Same goes for Harkey, which brings me to the suggestion of starting a thread for failures, busts, and dissapointments. That could be a long thread.
  4. Rick Wilkins. Now theres a guy I thought we'd be watching for years to come. Another Cub catcher I thought would be good (but for no good reason that I can remember) is Damon Berryhill. I think I liked him because I had one of his baseball cards. I was a real deep baseball thinker back then. That's how we think when we're younger. If I went to a game and some random had a big game, I thought they were somebody.
  5. Nah, they're really not much more obscure than Mark Davis or Kevin Tapani. ETA: I could have sworn we had Mark Davis at one point. Guess not. Didnt we have someone like him at one point?
  6. No kidding. They were some really good value during a time when the Cubs really didn't get good values. Did that time end without me knowing?
  7. Rick Wilkins. Now theres a guy I thought we'd be watching for years to come.
  8. I was so excited about Rojas, thinking we had gotten a stud closer. Then he was awful. I also hated when we got rid of Van Poppel. I remember tearing through packs of Upper Deck in '91 or '92 looking for VP rookie cards. It was that years Griffey.
  9. Again, not exactly obscure, but we can't forget the first big money bust I can remember, Mel Rojas. And back to the he was a Cub once group, Todd Van Poppel. ETA: never mind, Poppel was early '00s. I thought it was longer.
  10. No surprises. Didn't Schlitter retire earlier in the season? Berg was brutal, glad to see him gone. Z is as good as gone. Hopefully this clears room for Fielder and Wilson. I'd bet about anything CJ Wilson will be pitching for Boston next year. Either Boston or New York. He's going to get a ridiculous deal this offseason. Has to be the Yankees. Pitching is their main need. Garcia and Colon were pleasant surprises, but I don't think they want to count on that again.
  11. Haray [expletive] hated Maldonado. I remember hearing stories about Candy from some ex Cub on the radio. When they'd go on road trips, he'd insist on having his very own floor in the hotel away from the other players. He'd walk around in mink coats and [expletive]. He sounds like he was quite the douche.
  12. Dave Hansen Mike Hubbard. Trenidad Hubbard
  13. The first Cubs prospects I ever got excited about before they hit the majors were Kerry Wood and Steve Rain because Harry asked Steve Stone about them on multiple occassions and Stoney was high on both. That's funny. I vaguely remember Steve Rain existing, but that was before I followed the minor leagues and I had no idea he was ever any kind of prospect.
  14. Jeff Kunkel. And I don't know if these guys are really that obscure, but I'm thinking back to some of our home grown talent of the early '90s. There was Derrick May, Alex Arias, Hector Villanueva, and Rey Sanchez. I know May and Arias were supposed to be pretty good.
  15. Kal Daniels, now theres another one for the all They Were a Cub Once team.
  16. Tigers could be a legit threat to all. They just looked like another default AL Central champ before making some pretty solid additions in Fister, Young, and Betemit, who may not sound like much, but he's a pretty good guy to have at the bottom of your lineup. Verlander, Fister, and Scherzer may not be as sexy of a rotation as Halladay, Lee, Hamels, Oswalt, or even Gallardo, Greinke, Marcum, and Wolf, but their offense is very deep. Also, The NL teams have a lot less experience against Verlander and Fister than they do against Halladay, Lee, Greinke, and Marcum.
  17. I know he was more late 80's,though he did last pitch in 1990, but how about Jeff Pico? Who could forget his debut when he shut out the Reds, I beleive a complete game. I was 12 so I didnt know any better so I waited for the remainder of his short career for him to replicate it and become a top pitcher, but his career only lasted another 2 years.
  18. I seem to remember him being one of those guys who had one monster spring training but that was all he ever gave us.
  19. Maybe this one belongs more in the he was a Cub once category than the obscure category, but Willie Wilson.
  20. Would it be the worst thing in the world to keep Bush or another interim around for anothther year and just wait for Epsteins contract to be up? If the Red Sox do then extend him, it's not like there are any guys currently out there now who we'd have missed out on, and it would also give Cherington more incentive to come over. Just let Ricketts call the shots for now, and if he wants Fielder, Pujols, or any other big name free agents, just tell whoever the acting GM is to go after him.
  21. Cards scored 3 in the 4th, but Carpenter, who only threw 64 pitches was pinch hit for, so that doesn't look good for them.
  22. That's exactly the reason I think we should keep him. Z's a perfect example of being worth more on the roster than he is in a trade. Pretty much. There's no reason we should be paying this guy 18 mil to pitch for another team while we have Rodrigo Lopez or Casey Coleman on the mound and get nothing of value in return.
  23. Wait, what? This makes it sound as though we'd be the ones paying him the 18 mil and cutting him loose. That would be just stupid, unless they're giving us a decent return like Morrison. If the Marlins gave the White Sox 2 top prospects for a manager they were already sick of and we end giving them Z AND pay off his contract, somebody needs to be fired before they've even been hired. I wonder if it would be possible to land Morrison and Nolasco for Z if we pay the full contract and maybe kick them some kind of sweetener. (Yeah, I learned that lingo from Moneyball)
  24. Theres a difference between trading him just to trade him and trading him to get a ton of money off the books. Railroading him out of town would be foolish, especially considering our lack of pitching depth. Besides, I don't think it's possible for his trade value to go even lower, so if we're not getting anything back, it prefer hope he can have a solid walk year, which this would be as theres no way they'll pick up the option and will buy it out for the 9 mil, and if we're not in it come July, trade him then. However, if the Marlins are willing to pick up a big chunk of his contract, go for it.
  25. Remember, The Cards took the division with 83 wins. If this team could have hung in there thought the summer, even with the pitching they had, Jim Hendry has always been a wiz at those mid season trades to fill any holes, so he may very well have been able to land a starting pitcher and maybe a reliever or 2.
