    If they were to select only 4, I like the choices, but for an organization thin on starting pitching, Jay and certainly Rhee should have been protected. I doubt that Rhee will be taken but I don't think it's a risk worth taking with all the open roster spots.

    David Patton's highest level was A+ when the Cubs selected him. When he went back to the minors, he went to AA, though. He had big stuff, though, so your he's in line with your intuition. Or they think that Flaherty's issues and lack of upside are enough for another team either to not pick him or not keep him rostered long enough. Maybe I'm over valuing Flaherty, and I'm not sure what all will be available in the Rule 5 but I could see him being selected early on, top 5-10.

    And fun fact of the day: Speaking of our defensive catcher, according to BBR, he has a career dWAR of -1.9.

    Even before any moves were made, there were 33 guys on the roster. as of now, there should be 6 open spots. And PLEASE don't tell me they plan on tendering Koyie Hill a contract. He really has no business on the roster. They have to leave room for free agents as well. They can't fill the 40 man roster up to 40 or really anywhere close. But I am very surprised that they wouldn't protect Flaherty. I agree. Angel Guzmans another guy who will probably be rostered sooner or later. But Flaherty can play pretty much all over the field and put up very good minor league numbers although struggled in the 2nd half, especially in AAA. Still, he an easy bet to be taken and kept on a roster unless he's traded first.

    It really doesn't make much sense to me that those 3 wouldn't be protected, especially considering all of the open spots we have. I think they have until midnight to set it, so it could be that they're making decisions on which current guys to remove before they add any more.

    I'm very surprised that Flaherty hasn't been added, yet anyway. If not he's almost a sure thing to be taken. Of course he could be used in the Theo comp as well. They did want a big league ready super sub type, although I'd much prefer just send them Baker. My prediction is that Marwin is picked by someone and Jay is used as part of the Theo comp. I doubt that Rhee is polished enough for anyone to take him. I hope not anyway. After all the talk, I guess that Flaherty and Jay wouldn't be the worst compensation package in the world, at least for us. I wonder how the SoShers who were talking Garza, Castro, Cashner, Brett, or McNutt would feel about it.

    Marmols certainly a trade candidate, but he's pretty much set, as is the rest of the pen. Marmol Marshall Wood(probably) Carpenter Russell Samardzjia(unless starting) Dolis Beliveau Guzman (wherever he may be) Mateo Gaub Stevens Maine Caridad Cashner's also a possibility although I'd prefer he start, but if Marmol is traded, he could be a closer candidate. No need to go after more relievers, especially considering all the holes we need to fill.

    Is that a good thing? I'm not so sure that it is. What would lead you to believe that he would make a good pitching coach? He often had trouble throwing strikes. He had trouble keeping his arm healthy. He had trouble preventing blisters. I don't think thay any of that necessarily disqualifies him from being a pitching coach but I don't see a whole lot that makes me jump up and down about the idea either. He relied primarily on arm strnght and stuff, and that's not really something that can be taught. Kind of like having someone who relied primarily on strength and steroids to be your hitting coach.

    He would have also made us a better organization if he were willing to be traded for prospects a few months ago.

    I gotta say, it shocks me that there are so many folks on this board that think the notion Sveum expresses here is a bunch of nonsense. It's not nonsense, it's just that people put way too much stock in it. Do I want guys hustling? Sure, but I would much rather see them be really good baseball players. Meathead fans act like it's the most important thing, and it isn't. No question that hustling is a good thing, but if given the choice between naturally good players and the little gritty guys who put forth that extra effort to leg out a weak grounder when there team is down 8-2 in the 9th, I'll take the naturally good player any day.

    Yup. Like I said before, The Cubs may look like a straight to DVD Major League sequel at this moment, but they are still a big money team, and whatever becomes of him in the next 8 years, the money isn't going to be too much of a burdon on us going forword.

    So you'd prefer to keep our 24 year old starter with mediocre stuff who just got rocked in AAA for a 22 year old middle infielder with good AAA numbers? Marwin seems like a decent enough middle infielder. However, we have our share of those. It's always good to have depth, but if someone were to decide to pick him up so be it. As far as backup MI, he's in line behind Barney, Flaherty, LeMahieu, and maybe Lake in the next year or so and lower in the system we have Watkins, Amaya, Hernandez, and Baez. Even if the need for a backup SS did arise this coming season, Jonathon Mota seems like he could fill the same role as Gonzalez. As we learned last season you can never have too many back of the rotation pitching options unless you want to end up with the likes of James Russell, Doug Davis, and Ramon Ortiz. Jackson seemed to be pulling it together by the end of the season anyway. I'll give him one more season unless he ends up being Theo comp.

    Auh, oh. He metioned running balls out. "Prince and I have a great relationship," Sveum said. "I love Prince to death. It would be nice to have him at first base because of what he brings to the table every single day." Sveum points to Fielder's work ethic as the type of synergistic impact he's hoping to instill with Cubs players. If nothing else, I like that this suggests that Prince is still a possibility as opposed to some of the media clowns who would like to have us beleive that The Cubs will be looking like the teams of the mid 90's for the next 3-5 years.

    I don't believe that's in evidence at this point. If that's what Epstein believes, I'll trust him, but a flash video and a Cuban HR record do not convince me of that. That's why it's a gamble. Like you, if it came down to a choice, I'd prefer Fielder or Pujols any day of the week, but if that's not in the cards and they're thinking more long term this is the type of guy to gamble on. Whether or not the Cubs plan to spend big free agent money in the next 2-3 years, they do have it and even if he was a complete bust, by they time they decide to spend again the 6-7 mil/year wouldn't be any kind of hinderance. If he does end up living up to the hype, it could end up one of the best deals in baseball.

    Hell, part of me is pulling for a Cespedes/Jackson/Sizemore OF for 2012. All of me would be happy with that. Byrd would be easy to move. I bet we could sell a defensively lacking AL team like the A's or Mariners on Soriano for some quality prospects assuming we eat a significant amount of his salary.

    Whoever signs him is essentially buying a close to big league ready top 10-25 prospect. I think that a lot of teams would be OK with that if the price is something like 6/35. Assuming that the Cubs plan is to contend in roughly 3 years, that's the kind of gamble we should be making.
