  1. Yeah this was a Trib article 2 nights ago and discussed a few pages back. I think Theo is mostly humoring Francona here and he is not a serious candidate. I don't think that Theo would "humor" the guy he worked with for 9 year and supposedly has undying mutual respect for, and if he did, Tito would see through it. If Francona isn't a candidate now, he never was to begin with and he'd have known it a while ago and would be long since out of the discussion.
  2. Disagree. Before last year, Prado had 3 consecitve years with .300s/.800s. I think he's worth seeing if he can rebound, and at 28 it's quite realistic. Jurrjens may be similar to Wells in the fact that they're softer tossers, but Jurrjens has had far more success and is 4 years younger. I agree that he is often mistakenly given ace status due to his ERA, but he'd still be a great 2 behind Garza, and if we could get an actual "ace" to anchor the rotation, all of the sudden Ace, Garza, Jurrjens, Dempster, Z/Wells/Cashner looks pretty good and beyond this year, ace, Garza, Jurrgens, Cashner, Wells/McNutt/whoever is too. however, rather than 1 of Vitters, Lake, Alcantara, Ha, Hernandez, Amaya 1 of DeWitt, Flaherty, LeMahieu, Baker is more reasonable.
  3. How would this sound as a package for Prado and Jurrjens: 1. Marlon Byrd: Cubs pick up most of the salary productive, veteran starter. only a 1 year commitment. 2. Darwin Barney: quality piece. Could be a starting SS, could be a utility MI. 3. 2 of Vitters, Lake, DeWitt, LeMahieu, Flaherty, Alcantara, Hernandez, Amaya, Ha, Silva. 4. 2, low level pitchers. They don't need any big league ready pitching, in the rotation or pen, but there's always room for young high ceiling pitchers. Someone like Rhee, Beeler, Peralta, Antigua, Kurcz, Liria, or one of the Austins. If they insist on McNutt, I'd include him but not a 2nd pitcher, or else incliude a 2nd pitcher and only one from group 3. That's 5-6 quality pieces right there at various levels. Sounds like a lot, but we're fishing for 2 young, quality big league players. Maybe they kick us a fringe prospect or 2 to even out the numbers.
  4. I was looking at Carlos Penas career stats on BBR, and he's always been a gread defensive 1B, he's always been in the negatives in dWAR. last year he was -0.5 and a career -5.7. What am I missing in regards to this?
  5. And sadly Carroll is an upgrade over what they marched out there last year. I know they signed the Japanese fella who was injured for most of the season, so I don't we why they're paying for an older Ryan Theriot rather than giving him another chance. Either way, the Twins future depends heavily on Maur, Morneau, and their young pitching, so I doubt that it makes a difference whether Jamey Caroll, Alexi Casilla, or the Japanese guy are manning SS. Have you seen that roster without Kubel and Cuddyer? You have Mauer, Morneau, and a lot of bad. I simply never understand why teams would go out of the way to sign guy like Carroll, Aaron Miles, and Nick Punto when they can probably pull one out of their farm system or pick one up for next to nothing during ST.
  6. It would actually make some sense for Boston, as they'd essentially be getting off the hook for the last 4-5 years of Crawfords contract, and by the end he'll be lucky to be what Soriano is now. However, if this was a wink wink compensation deal for Epstein, for us, eating the bitter back end of Crawfords contract would not be at all a better option than giving them a few A ballers.
  7. You mean slugging % right? Nope, not that one either. OPS maybe
  8. Marlins arent [expletive] around. However, I highly doubt that 2 of the top 3 free agents will sign in mid November and they'll keep exploring.
  9. Very odd situation. They may be losing their starting SS, need a new LF, and are in need of any kind of offense yet they're too busy setting the market for closers.
  10. Paps has spend his entire career in the AL, so maybe he's a much better hitter than we knew.
  11. If ever there was a team who loves their gritty white guys it would be the Minnesota Twins.
  12. You know it's a slow baseball rumor news day when they're playing up the Jamey Carroll sweepstakes this much. I wonder how many fan bases have their fingers crossed and eagerly F5ing MLBTR in hopes of landing a 37 year old journeyman utility middle infielder.
  13. B2B + posting = FAIL I'm not sure how many times I have to tell people to be nice, but I'm not going to be patient about it much longer. Oh, so "insult the post, not the poster" is out the window, too? Come on Mojo, you know you have free reign.
  14. http://assets.espn.go.com/photo/2008/0612/pg2_g_cubspants_400.jpg Is it me or does that ump look like the love child of Robert DeNiro and Stanley Tucci? Looks like it might be Jocko Conlon who was a nototiously colorful character as far as umps go.
  15. Am I the only one who feels that there's a big part of the Cardinals organization that secretly hopes that someone else offer Pujols a ridiculous offer that they can't hope to match as long as it isn't within the division, especially The Cubs?
  16. I think that the Jays have already picked up the option on Encarnacion. Betemit will likely benefit from the weak market and get something like a 3/20something type deal. DeRosa might get a 1 year deal from someone. The rest are garbage. It's a good time to be Aramis Ramirez.
  17. I think they'll get Reyes, Buehrle, and Juan Pierre.
  18. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3281/2570037311_09a872fc22.jpg?v=0 I actually like this one aside from the giant number smack in the center.
  19. Part of me would rather they handcuff themselves for years to come by giving him some ridiculous contract.
  20. Meeting with a team really doesn't mean much. Unless they blow him away with an ill advised 10/300 type deal, he'll be meeting with a lot of teams before he signs some time in mid december.
  21. He plays the game the white right way. Sorry, freudian slip.
  22. I thought you were trying to discourage the fap fap fap posts? There are other ways of expressing that level of emotion. Yeah, but I'm running out of underpants.
  23. I'm not following. Are you suggesting that that's a problem area, because assuming that Marmol can rebound, the pen would be the one part of this team that would be good to go if the season were to start today. Even without Marmol rebounding, the pen is good to go. Unless Cashner goes to Iowa to stretch out and Samardzija converts to starter. Even then, there's Marmol, Marshall, Carpenter, and Russell. Potentially Beliveau and Dolis and Wood if we want him. Angel Guzman may also still exist but the I've yet to hear it confirmed nor denied.
  24. I'm not following. Are you suggesting that that's a problem area, because assuming that Marmol can rebound, the pen would be the one part of this team that would be good to go if the season were to start today.
  25. Still say Pujols is a pipe dream and Fielder's a far more realistic target. We can dream though, can't we?
