  1. This is mentioned all the time, but does this ever happen? Isn't that what the Indians did with Pomerantz in the Ubaldo trade? Now there's a trade that could look very, very bad for the Indians in a few years time. Wasn't that only like a month or so? I don't ever recall a guy being shelved for six months to be a PTBNL. I think it was a month or two, but they did use the principle. Not sure if they've ever gone a full six months, but if you don't need a guy right then and there I don't see why you couldn't.
  2. I always assumed that he worked for the Cubs human resources department. I can assure you that they're far from desperate, but you can never have too many applicants, and they'd probably like to have as many Cubs fans as possible filling PR an marketing related positions because they'd have an entusiasm for the job that could not be replicated by your average grad. If you want passionate and mostly knowledgeable Cubs fans this would be the place to post the openings.

  4. So if the Cubs and Red Sox don't win a world series for the next 50+ years will the media come up with The Curse To Amicably Word Out Compensation Without the Commisioner Stepping In? Still, these ass holes can't still be asking for McNutt or Jackson can they? If they were smart, they would have taken what they could get before 2 of the best took over the negotiations for our side.
  5. Eh, nothing that's going to prevent us from going after Cespedes and/or Solar.
  6. The Tigers seem good enough to me, at least in comparison to the rest of their division that they could probably wait until the summer to see what becomes available.
  7. According to Heyman, we're pretty far apart with Garza. We offered 7.95 mil and he wants 10.225. I'm guessing we end up somewhere between 8-9.
  8. According to a Tweet from Kevin Goldstein which I am unable to cut and paste, the teams most likely to sign Cespedes are 1. Cubs 2. Marlins 3. Phillies
  9. I think I'm gonna go dig through the old Jermaine Dye thread. That could be fun. Edit: I thought they Dye threads were longer than that. Disappointing. You did make a few funny comments about how you thought he was on pace for an "easy 40-50" HR the year before, though. I do seem to remember him starting incredibly strong and completely collapsing. He did finish the '09 season with a .793 OPS and 27 HR despite a brutal 2nd half, so he must have had a pretty good first half.
  10. It could be that teams are going more and more by advanced stats and learning that they could get similar value with far cheaper options than these prized pigs. In Fielders case, it's also that not many teams need a 1st baseman. I still think that if nobody steps in with at least a 6/135 offer that he'll end up back with the Brewers for something like 3/60 with a mutual option or two so they can make the most of their final years with the window open.
  11. What the hell happened to Walker? He had a very good bat for a utility infielder and I don't remember him being particularly bad on defense. He just kind of dissapeared after a short, forgettable stint with the A's. He was 35 years old and coming off a sub-replacement level season and a below average one. He also had an awful defensive reputation and wanted more than a bench role near the league minimum salary. Pretty much exactly what happened to Jermaine Dye. Oh God, the Jermaine Dye saga. When he was looking for work, I remember people calling in to Boers and Bernstein griping about it being racial despite the fact that he was A. coming off an awful season and B. rejecting offers from several teams including the Giants who offered him 3 mil which he didn't feel was enough money to move his family and the Cubs, with whom he didn't think he'd get enough PT.

  13. They already have a full outfield with Swisher(Switch), Gardner(LH), Granderson(LH) and Jones (RH). If not, even if they passed on soriano Byrd would be a great option for them. I dobt that they'll get Pena for <8 mil. Their best bet is one of those aging sluggers like Matsui or Vlad. Of course there's also Manny. He'd add some nice intensity to the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry. I don't know how much money he's looking for, but I can't see anyone giving him more than 1-2 mil+incentives. There was also talk earlier in the season that Jermaine Dye was looking to come out of forced retirement, so he could be an option.
  14. Is this really that difficult of a concept? I like Kerry Wood. I like the Cubs. Therefore, I like having Kerry Wood on the Cubs. How long before Woody becomes the Cubs version of Matthew McConaughey in Dazed and Confused?
  15. Would trading Soriano and picking up that much salary in a deal with the Yanks, perhaps for Hughes be a likely option? I think it'd be much more likely that we could sell them on Byrd to provide OF depth and then they could move Andruw Jones to DH. We could probably sell a lot of teams on Byrd and get a decent return however, he's probably more valuable if sold as a center fielder. Soriano is the one that they seem set on moving and eating a good amount of salary. I definitely think that if he isn't moved by spring training of next year he'll be given his walking papers unless he has a big rebound this year. I don't know what the Yankees expect to get for 2 mil or less, but I can't see it being much better than Soriano.
  16. I'm still trying to figure out how Dolis, who's never really been anything special in the minors seems to have made every top 10 list for the past few years yet Beliveau doesn't even register despite the fact that he's had great numbers at every stop he's made. They're both the same age and Beliveau's a lefty, which tends to give guys a leg up.
  17. I wonder what happens to his respectable .275./348./485 line when he goes to from Coors to Oakland and their weak lineup. Also, now that they've acquired an entire outfield over the past month, I wonder if that's any indication that they're ready to move Michael Taylor. Definitely seems like a Theo target, however he's more likely to cost prospects than the big league expendables we'd prefer to move.

  19. That arguement often comes up with guys protected by NTCs. Some guys are simply happy where they are and would only move for a contender. Aramis must have had a pretty good idea that his time as a Cub was drawing to a close in July and then August, with his team I don't even want to remember how many games out of first and he wouldn't approve a trade. Even if the Cubs cut Soriano, he still makes that money, the difference being that contenders are then more likely to have interest in him for league minimum and giving up no prospects.
  20. I'd think that they'd try him at 3rd first. Beyond Castro, we have Lake, Hernandez, Amaya, and now Torreyes in the high ceiling(and DeVoss and Watkins in the not quite as high ceiling) MI department. Beyond Vitters, we really don't have much of anything at 3rd depending on your feelings toward Cerda and Contreras.
  21. assuming that #cubs person suggests someone in the Cubs front office, I'd take this with a grain of salt. He's not going to say no, Soriano will be gone at all costs-if nobody offers us anything we'll cut him and someone can have him for free. Why would the Cubs cut Soriano? The money's spent. Might as well have a 1-2 WAR player on your team and wait for an injury to create a need at LF/DH for some team in the AL playoff hunt. I don't think they would. I'm just saying that there's no reason for them to say anything but Soriano's like to be our LF next year.

  23. The first one that popped into my head was Beckett for Hanley and Anibal Sanchez. That was really a win for both sides, which is probably more rare. Beckett has been great for Boston, and while they'd surely love to have had Hanley in their lineup instead of Alex Gonzalez, Marco Scutoro, and whoever else has cycled through short stop for the Red Sox since the trade, they havnt exactly been having difficulty with offensive production since.
  24. Holliday for Car Go, Bradley for Ethier, Garcia for Floyd, Mulder for are a few I can think of off the top of my head.
