  1. They don't NEED to, but should. We already have Marmol, Samardzjia, and Wood as far as sure things to make the team. I guess Russell's close to that. Aside from them, there's Carpenter, Dolis, Mateo, and Gaub who already have their clocks ticking and should be on the team. That's a more than full pen right there. I know it's always good to have backups, but we also have Weathers, who I think I'm the only one intrigued by, Castillo who will need to either make the team or work out a deal to keep if we want him and then there's Corpas, Sonnenstine, Maine and now Miller. Let's not forget that we have 6 starters. Beliveau is also on the 40 man and could be called up at some point. I'd say we don't need any relievers, again unless it's youngish reclemation.
  2. We've already signed enough veteran relievers we don't need. The only way this season will be somewhat palatable is if we get a chance to see as many of the young guys as possible. Enough of the scrap heap unless we're talking 26-28 year old reclamation projects.
  3. Everyone's favorite big league nomad back with Milwaukee. Damn, he was really looking like the real deal in '03 & '04.
  4. The good news is he can play all over the field and he's a switch hitter. He's extremely versatile having played professionally at 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, LF, CF, and RF. He's got plus speed and a plus glove. Good player to have come off the bench. He's been poor offensively in the bigs unfortunately. Pretty good minor league career got him spots in the Futures Game and AAA All Star game though. Hopefully if he makes the team he'll have better numbers because his plate appearances off the bench should go up a good bit being in the NL now. I'm glad he's a Cub! I wouldn't expect him to make the team. Unless someone is traded, our reserves will be Baker, DeWitt, and Johnson, with either Sappelt or Campana rounding it out and of course a backup C. It is interesting how many spare MI we have invited to Spring Training. between Tolbert, Amezaga, E Gon, as well as Scales and Mota. Could be that they're still shopping Baker and DeWitt. I guess if Stewart gets hurt or is a total bust, Baker and/or DeWitt could hold down 3rd and one of them could be called up. Side note, I did notice that E Gon has a solid minor league line (.296/.374/.449)and it's pretty consistant all the way through.
  5. Any somewhat knowledgeable fans were happy wit the DeRosa trade. The "meatballs" were the ones unhappy with it and seem to think that he would have saved the 2009 season after Aramis went down. Who knows, maybe he would have helped keep us afloat while Aramis was gone as he did have a pretty good first half with the Indians before he was sent to the Cardinals, but there's no reason not to like the trade, except for the fact that it was made to free up salary for Milton Bradley.
  6. i'm pretty skeptical that he'll pan out, but there's certainly potential there, and i don't think that gambling on him is a bad idea at this point. you gotta pay to play. Goldstein says that he'd become an instant top 7-15 prospect, so it would essentially be giving a big league deal to a draft pick, not that we've never done that before. The main difference is that at age 26, he has a lot less time to prove himself than most draft picks and top prospects. I still want him though mainly because we have the need for a corner outfielder and the money.
  7. May as well put this here: According to Bruce Miles, Trever Miller, Michael Brenley, Chris Rusin, Marco Carillo, Trey McNutt, Jay jackson, Brett jackson, Alfreda Amezago, Edger Gonzalez, Jonathon Mota, Matt Tolbert, Bobby Scales, Jae-Hoon Ha, Dae-Eun Rhee, James Adduci, Rodrigo Lopez and Jason Jaramillo are among the Cubs 21 non rosterinvitees to Spring Training.
  8. For a moment, I had him confused with Trevor Hoffman and was a lot more intrigued. This being said, Miller's still a pretty decent lefty, and if I thought that we had any chance to contend I'd like the move a lot more than I do. Not that I hate it, it just is. We may mock a lot of these random minor league signing, but if every play on the team aside Castro really is for sale,it makes sense to have some of these spare relievers and infielders if guys like Baker, DeWitt, or Russell are moved.
  9. Precedent is the standard the Cubs want to use. Verbal agreement of "significant" is what the Red Sox are arguing. With Selig? Who knows who he'll agree with. The problem with the term "significant" is that it is a very broad one. Some might see it as meaning a top prospect. It could also be argued that it means a big league ready middle reliever or utility player.
  10. But if the two teams had initially agreed that they would be compensated with talent and not cash, whether it was in writing or not Selig will probably enforce that. I guess it all depends on the exact wording of the agreement, which there must have been. I think this is more what it will come down to, and not setting a precedent. I'd think that if anyone had more compensation coming it would be the Padres. I don't know how much time Hoyer had left on his contract, but he did take a lateral move rather than a promotion.
  11. Nothing earth shattering, but all pretty decent to get on minor league deals. I'd take any one of them over Rodrigo Lopez.
  12. Maybe I'm in the minority in thinking that the Sox will get something of value. Won't be Castro, Garza or Jackson, probably not even Szczur or McNutt. My guess is a decent pitching prospect like Rhee, Antigua, Wells, or Beeler as well as either a young guy or else a big league or big league ready guy like Baker, J. Jax, or Russell. Junior Lake is probably the absolute high end of what they'll get. This doesn't mean that I think that they deserve it, which they really don't but they did make an agreement and Selig will make something happen.
  13. Not really. If there's nothing to report, then there's nothing to report. Especially considering that he's not in the states at this time, the offers are still likely coming in and we probably won't hear much of anything until he's close to a decision.
  14. If someone said it it must be true.
  15. His given name is David Shelley Duncan, so he chose to call himself Shelley which I guess is worse.
  16. Maybe he's attempting to devote his coaching abilities to making his kids good at baseball. He has two kids who played baseball in the major leagues. I'd say he did just that. They're just not particularly good.
  17. I agree that Byrd will likely be moved during the season. However, I think that how soon depends as much on how Brett Jackson does in Iowa than Byrd himself. Of course, if someone were to come to us with an offer, he'd probably be moved either way, and even if Jackson is struggling the Sappelt enthusiasts can get to see him in action. Teams looking for a mid season replacement or spare bat are a lot more likely to come inquiring about Byrd than Upton, Jones, or Ethier. If so, it's because they'd think the cost is lower. If pricetags are anywhere near the same, teams would opt for all 3 of those guys before Byrd, because of either upside or age. That's what I was suggesting. If a team's just looking for a fill in or spare bat, they'd rather just give up a few fringe prospects and maybe a bit of cash for Byrd rather than what it would take for any of the others.

  20. Am I the only one surprised by the ommission of Nick Struck? He's 22 and held his own in A+ and AA, though he did struggle through AAA.
  21. How bout that, another injury prone old guy.
  22. He'll reportedly get an invite to spring training. Maybe if we stock up enough AAAA middle infielders it will equal 1 good one.
  23. Not if some random guy says Cespedes to Cubs, but if there's somebody who at least passes it off as somewhat credible, IE Cespedes to Cubs on 7/42 deal as reported by WGN 720, I'll tend to entertain it to some degree. There was a lot of that type of thing on the Darvish posting night.
  24. It usually doesn't happen. But if it's something that is big enough to be national news and everyone's waiting on, like Darvish, it gets ridiculous. The night before it was announced I was following and just hit yu darvish in the search. Every few minutes, some other team supposedly officially won the bid. So you went to see what the entire internet was saying and you were surprised it was conflicting? This is amazing. All I really follow as far as sports news goes on Twitter are MLBTR and Bruce Miles and as of recently Kevin Goldstein. I usually use the search. If for example you typed Pujols in the search box the night before he signed you'd ge multiple reports of if and with whom he had signed. Aside from Miles, MLBTR, and Goldstein who are some good ones to follow for such things?
