  1. Considering that they've already stated that they'll move Turner for the right guy, if they want Garza, we want Turner. If not, by all means find the right guy. Now if they offered Castellanos, Smyly, and Porcello or another prospect, would that be worth it? What about Smyly, Crosby, and someone from the back end of their top 10?
  2. BJ Upton has posted 4 or more WAR 4 of the last 5 seasons (and 2 of the last 3). His 4.1 WAR last season would have ranked only behind Matt Garza on the Cubs. This myth that BJ Upton is some sort of bust is absurd. He may not have lived up to his considerable upside, but he's still a very good player. I didn't say he was a bust, but he's simply not an impact bat. I get his value as a center fielder, but if someone were to move him to a corner that what happens to his WAR?
  3. I think they are pretty content with their pen. Joba will come in around mid-season to lessent he load on Robertson/Rivera. Betances/Baneulos could be up at some point to add to the pen. Isn't one of the Bs a starter? That gives them further flexibility to move a starter. CC, Pineda, and Nova are theirs for the next several years. Now another affect if these two acquisitions is what it could do for Edwin Jackson's asking price. With the Yankees now out of the equation I'd have to assume that the 4 year 15-17 mil per is even less likely to happen than it was to begin with.
  4. That could be the answer right there. Back to Soriano for Hughes and we pay Sorianos entire salary. That way they get a DH who can at least hit lefties and they don't have to add any additional salary. I'm sure if Hughes were on the block they would get better offers. Probably moot anyway because they'll likely try to move Burnett instead. If they're willing to eat a decent portion of his salary it shouldn't be a problem for them.
  5. Fair enough, what about Marmol? They already have Rivera, Robertson, and Soriano but you can never have too many back end relievers. Maybe kick them Byrd as well as 4th OF. Could be good to add an extra veteran righty with the lefties Granderson and Gardner.
  6. the better question is whether it's really worth giving up anything of value for phil hughes. he's got 4 years of service time and he sucked last year. at some point potential and former prospect status don't really matter any more. But the fact that he had 2 successful big league seasons before last year, 1 as a starter and 1 as a reliever should be worth something. Now that the Yanks need a DH, I wonder if we could build a package around Soriano.
  7. If anything, trying to swing a deal for Phil Hughes would be more up Theo's alley. I wonder what he'd cost.
  8. Between this and Kuroda, The Yankees completely change the face of their rotation going from CC/Nova/AJ/Garcia/Hughes to CC/Pineda/Kuroda/Nova/AJ, Hughes, or Garcia. Does this put pressure on the Red Sox to go after a front end starter? Say Matt Garza?
  9. Huge. I was thinking Logan Morrison or B.J. Upton, if he's still remotely considered an impact hitter.
  10. Kevin Goldstein adds via Twitter that he has no idea who it is, but every prospect in their system was on the table at or point. Sounds interesting.
  11. Looks like Bianchi's replacement. More like Andres Blanco's. Is Blanco even in the system anymore? He's been gone for two years. He was with the Rangers last I heard. My point is that Bianchi was a somewhat intriguing prospect. Amezaga is a guy who can play short stop. I just hope that he's not Castro's replacement.
  12. FWIW, according to a Tweet by Bruce Miles, the cover of the Cubs pocket schedules was changed, removing Castro.
  13. Looks like Bianchi's replacement. More like Andres Blanco's.
  14. He should have learned the lesson from the original incident - not much good happens after midnight. [nccub inserts pic from gremlins] [davearm calls him a rapist] [west side rooter tells us lahair could have hit that better than expected] [strangely worded. the past and present tense appear to be having a slap fight.]
  15. And just when I'd fully accepted that it wasn't a possibility.
  16. If that's the case, I'm willing to bet the only real competition the Cubs have is the Marlins. Don't be so sure. Just because the Cubs are a bigger market than the other listed teams doesn't mean that someone else won't make a higher offer. The last thing we want to do is over flex our financial muscles just because we can and next thing you know we're offering 9/120 when the next best offer is 6/50. I don't think that we'd do that but if the price seems to high perhaps move on to Solar.I do think that if all offers are similar that the White Sox having two somewhat young Cuban stars could be a big factor for him.
  17. I understand that there's no urgency to move Garza, and have seen the WAR numbers showing how valuable he is. However, if they really want to move him to stock the farm system, at some point we have to step away from the demand for an ace caliber return, which asking a team for their 2 top prospects and then some is. I'd be happy to keep Garza, but if any organization were to offer up the keys to their farm system and say we could have any 4 guys aside from their top 2, it would be hard to turn down unless we're talking a bottom 5 system. Even then you'd want to at least explore what they have in depth. We could always take 2 guys and 2 PTBNL if there's someone they drafted this past year that we might want.
  18. There must be something in their system to make that worthwhile. Make it 4 guys and start with Crosby and Smyly. Maybe Porcello's in the mix, maybe not. I'm sure if any FO team could dig into any system and find the right package it's ours. Would be nice to get at least one bat out of it.
  19. If you recall, he signed with the Nationals and was named in the Mitchell Report not even a week later. They wouldn't let him catch the opening day ceremonial first pitch from George W. as a result.
  20. Or maybe he was his supplier.
  21. Ivan Rodriguez has been traded in the middle of the season twice. Mike Piazza was traded in the middle of the season twice, in the same season. We acquired Jason Kendall in the middle of a pennant race. Those are just off the top of my head. See, I completely forgot about those. It's not every year you can get Jason Kendall for the stretch run. Good God, how had I forgotten that Jason Kendall was a member of the he was a Cub once club. He'd been OPSng .542 that season and Soto had been mashing the ball since the moment he was called up.
  22. Well, it was fun. 'Til next time a deal for Garza is all but complete.
  23. Didn't see that coming. I'm wondering if they tried to trade Baker or Maine before they finally waived him thinking that he'd be the best bet to make it through unclaimed.
  24. I know I'm going to regret this, but is that really too far from Brian LaHairs absolute ceiling? Take off 5-10 points from the BA and a 10 from th SLG and it sounds reasonable from LaHair. Granted it would be great for the first year or to from Rizzo as opposed to the absolute ceiling from the 29 year old LaHair but I'd hope and expect for Rizzo to develop into something more. Is Adam Dunn too much to expect? Sickels had his ceiling at Ryan Howard, but if we could get a defensively capable Adam Dunn color me thrilled.
  25. I'm not sure if that is inside info or just someone making an obvious assumption. I'm not quite sure what's going on, but it could be that this thing is back to where it had been for the past few weeks.Or maybe they've just been quietly moving along in the negotiations ever since trying to work more of our players into it.Just waiting for Garza to be spotted in a Vegas bar singing Detroit Rock City.
