  1. I want Smardz over Volstad. If if were up to me, it would be Smardz over Dempster. I like Dempster, but there's the guy we should have traded because he's simply not a part of the future. I'd like to give Maholm, Wood, Shark, and Volstad each a spot in 2012. Sprinkle in an ace FA next year and a Garza extension and there could potentially have a top rotation going forward.
  2. I don't hate this, relatively speaking. I love 1-2. Like 6-7, especially if we can at least strike silver wit Stewart. If we could get a lefty platoon mate for Soriano, I'd like 5 a lot more. 8-whatever. It's the 3-4 which are an eye sore. Garza-Demp-Maholm-Wood-Volstad could end up a formiddable rotation if the stars align and all goes our way. Same goes for the lineup, with DeJesus, LaHair, Soriano, Soto, and Stewart all huge ?s. We could hover around .500 and in July trade for some guy we never even thought about in the offseason. Add the right amount sugar, and Kool-Aid is a wonderful beverage.
  3. Meant for Spring Training Pics thread.
  4. Havnt seen these posted yet, but some random Cubs ST Twitter tidbits from Miles, Goldstein, and Bleacher Nation: -Starlin Castro has learned to be careful becaus there are a lot of bad people in the world(Miles) -Chris Bosio hearts Chris Volstad(Bleacher Nation) -Dale Sveum is going to help Alfonso Soriano to "hustle"(Bleacher Nation) -and Sveums tentative lineup of choice: 1. DeJesus 2. Castro 3. Byrd 4. LaHair 5. Soriano 6. Soto 7. Stewart 8. Barney
  5. Endorsement deal for a new herpes cream.
  6. Hopefully this means Theo will go into a "win at all costs" mindset to beat Lucchino. Judging by the list of suiters and the way this offseason has gone in regards to big name free agents, my money's on The Padres.
  7. Now I know I joked about his whiteness a few pages back, but could it make matters worse for MLBs drug testing policy from a PR standpoint in the long run? Not only is he the reigning MVP, but he's clean cut and white, and somewhat of a golden boy. Say a similar situation arises in the near future with a not so white or clean cut player, and they're found guilty. I don't think anyone will be surprised when the race card is played.
  8. Oh ok, I see now. I still think the decision had been made long before, but that was the first time they articulated it to LaHair (or at least articulated the part about making him the starting first baseman this year). Personally, I think it was a bad decision. Unlike most, I think that LaHair does in fact have a shot at a short but somewhat productive career. However, not as a 1st baseman, and hopefully not ours. However, suppose that he is a legit late bloomer, and not a AAAA bum. It might have been better to let him try his luck at a corner outfield spot, where he might have a future. continued LaHair monologue.
  9. Innocent? You mean Not Guilty by a technicality. He didn't challenge the testing result, but the process. If anything his reputation will be hurt more by this outcome. The result wasn't overturned. Now instead of getting caught and being punished, he got caught and avoided punishment because of a technicality. In no meaningful way does this absolve him. If Brewers fans think this is going to lift the stain from Braun, they're in for a reality check. The technicality is arguably the worst case scenerio for his reputation in the long term. If he was found guilty, he'd be branded a drug cheat. If not guilty, he'd get the herpes stigma, which lasts a lot longer than 50 games. Since it ended up the way that it did he gets both hanging over his head. And a hideous lothing line.
  10. I'm not at all saying that LaHair had anything to do with their decision, just after that meeting with him during the Winter meetings is around the time they made the decision.
  11. Granted, this is the better scenerio for the 2012 Brewers, but in the long run, what's worse for Brauns reputation: Decision upheld, 50 game suspension or decision overturned due to technicality plus herpes rumors.
  12. which keeps bringing me back to unconfirmed reports.
  13. [expletive] castro is a genius! I remember the herpes rumor, but last I checked it was posted by some blogger. Was their ever any follow up if it was legit or not?
  14. Being clean cut and white has it's advantages.
  15. Letting Flaherty go for nothing in the Rule 5 draft, then signing Jeff Bianchi, then letting Bianchi go was a pretty strange series of moves. The Reed signing was also completely befuddling since there's really almost nothing good about it and now we have a glut of OFs ourselves in DeJesus, Soriano, Byrd, Campana, Reed, and Sappelt. I don't think anything else has really been strange this offseason. Heck, I like pretty much every other move we've made. It's the moves we've not made that I've not liked, but that's a different conversation. I'm thinking that at the beginning, when we signed DeJesus they had not ye decided on the direction of the team for 2012 and beyond, but DeJesus was a great value either way so they grabbed him up. Leaving Flaherty and Gonzalez was likely because they wanted as many 40 man spots open as possible, but it's still very puzzling to me. They had like 8 open spots at the time of the rule 5 protection deadline. My guess is that the decision on the offseason plans was made when they had that sit down meeting with Bryan LaHair and he came out of it very confident. They probably told him as of now, you're our 1st baseman, although if we can get Pujols or Fielder on our terms, then you'll still have an opportunity to earn a spot at ST.
  16. What exactly has been strange about our moves (except Reed Johnson)? Strange doesn't really mean bad, just head scratchers. Don't act like we did make a lot of moves this offseason that made you go hmm. Same goes for Billy. Say what you will about his legion of outfielders, but he got some good values with the exception of CoCo Crisp. Jusging by the direction that the A's are likely going giving Michael Taylor and Reddick full time roles, but he got Smith for next to nothing and he'll likely be the A's 3 hitter.
  17. Billy has made some strange offseason moves considering the likely direction os his team, but they're really no stranger than some of ours.
  18. As the highly anticipated '11-'12 offseason draws to a close, what was the most memorable storyline to come out of it? It's hard to believe that it wasn't too long ago that many of us legitamtely expected Prince Fielder or Albert Pujols, C.J. Wilson and/or Yu Darvish, Aramis Ramirez, to all be Cubs by now.
  19. All signs seem to point to him being cashed, but he would be a very high reward reclamation project, and the type of target that Theo would go after. The Cubs haven't been linked to him, but there are 5 mystery teams. I'd take a look at Kazmir over scrap heap depth chart fodder like Robertson or Lopez any day of the week.
  20. WHO LIKES THIS GUY!?!? I am the Frank Grimes to your Homer Simpson here. WSR they'd be lucky to get one decent prospect if he does extremely well. He's suspended for 50 games off the bat... You're not exactly Mr. Popular yourself around these parts Freddy vs. Jason or whatever your name used to be. As for the term decent prospects, much like the term substantial compensation, it has a very open ended meaning.
  21. I can't fathom the #s he'd have to put up in a month and a half to get a few decent prospects in return. If he can prove that he can still hit in that month in a half, contenders would be more than willing to give up a few decent prospects for the 2 month rental. They won't be gettting any blue chips, but its not impossible that a productive Manny could land the A's a few of somebodies top 15-20 depending on how good he looks and how desperate teams get down the stretch. If not, it's 500K, and that's not enough money to stun even the A's.
  22. http://sonsofsamhorn.net/topic/68454-compensation-for-letting-theo-go/page__st__1200 I wanted to go point and laugh, but it doesn't appear anybody has mentioned Garza after this report came out. My favorite, particularly since I'm also bugged by another Chris Carpenter I can't wait to see that board explode when we send the Padres Brett Jackson.
  23. So for 500K, Billy buys the A's some publicity and if all goes well, a few decent prospects come July. Not a bad deal.
  24. How so? We still end up with one of the best, if not the single best, front offices in baseball. I'll gladly give Chris Carpenter up for that. His absolutely highest potential is to be like a LaTroy Hawkins or Bobby Howry type pitcher when they were good, which is a solid 8th inning guy but nothing you can't replace through FA or your system. Agreed. He wasted no time overhauling this entire franchise despite the ugly surface. We already had a pen loaded with options to fill 3 available spots and I'm glad it was him over Dolis or Beliveau. Personally, I think that it was a great resolution for both sides aside from a few Cubs fans who thought we'd give up nothing and Red Sox fans who thought they'd get everything. He has a great chance to make the Red Sox bullpen, which seems to be their main weakness. COnsidering that less than 24 hours ago people were ligitamately worried that we'd give up McNutt, I think we should be relieved(no pun intended).
  25. Soler makes sense for everyone, but arguebly, he means more to the Cubs than anyone. Sure, he could end up the cornerstone of the Epstein era, but more importantly it's the fit and the best place to spend the money. For example, the White Sox and the Astros (who are the latest team in on the sweepstakes)There's not much of value on either farm. Therefore, if they have some 25-30 mil to spend on the minors, they might be wiser to spread it around multiple high ceiling prospects rather than spend it on one guy. The Cubs, on the other hand seemingly have a bright future. We have a lot of guys who seem like they could be viable contributers at the big league level in the next 5 months to 5 years on one level or another. Paying that much to add one guy who could push our system into the top 10 would be money very well spent.
