  1. Hasn't he been pretty good for them as a starter? Or did he just have a few good starts? I can't remember. Either way I find it hard to believe that the Astros have 5 guys who are better than him to take a starting spot away. Strange move for a team with minimal assets and needs just about everywhere. Myers was one of the few Astros with some decent degree of trade value, especially considering how many teams are reportedly looking for rotation upgrades.
  2. http://l.yimg.com/j/assets/p/sp/getty/02/fullj.7954802544f55119819b1e519d2c08ed/7954802544f55119819b1e519d2c08ed-getty-140085111.jpg he looks quite creepy in the picture, dirt lip and all. It all screams out hurry up, I have a junior varsity voleyball game to catch.
  3. He may have lost a bit of luster, but he's still a 24 year old, potential front end starter. If the Braves trade him, it will be costly. Looking at their big league needs, all they seem to need is maybe a left fielder, as they don't seem all that confident in Prado going forward and an heir to Chipper. If nobody can fill those needs, an impressive prospect package will be the cost. Maybe McNutt, Szczur, and Lake or Vitters and we could perhaps get another piece out of it.
  4. trading a major-league ready starter for a guy like szczur would be absurd. the braves would be looking for someone like brett jackson in return, a (nearly) major-league ready offensive prospect. I'm going to have to side with Truffle on this one. Minor isn't quite on the same level as Latos/Pineda/Cahill/Gio, but he still should command a solid return if the Braves decide to trade him. He's young, cheap, talented, and capable of contributing immediately to any team's rotation. It would probably take Brett Jackson plus a solid upside guy in the low minors (maybe Rhee or Torreyes) to get the discussions started, in my opinion. Or even, Minor and so-and-so for Garza... or even Castro. I'm sure the Braves want to get better at the MLB level if they're trading a guy like Minor. Definitely no on Castro. As for Garza, the reason for the possibility of trading Minor would be a log jam of young, starting pitching, so there wouldnt be reason to trade him for another starter who's about to get very expensive.
  5. According to a BN tweet, Castro took a Kerry Wood BP pitch to the wrist, but he's OK. Good thing too. Otherwise, it would have done a number on the what harm can bringing back Ole Woody on another team friendly deal sentiment.
  6. I liked Marshall a lot, but if we got back a guy with the potential to be a solid MOR starter alone I'd have been satisfied, let along that plus a young MI with tremendous upside and another guy who looks to be ar worst a solid 4th outfielder. This trade may not have made headlines, but it just looks better and better every time I think about it.
  7. Did you just group Carlos Marmol with John Gaub and Casey Weathers? Only in that they have great stuff and poor control. This is based on the limited time we saw Gaub. As for Weathers, I knew nothing of him before we got him, but he was the 7th overall pick in '07, and always been a reliever at least as a pro so someone must have really liked what they saw once upon a time to pick a reliever that high.
  8. Why is the general consensus that Russell already has a spot nailed down with Maine and Gaub battling it out? All 3 are around the same age and Russell has more experience and as a result an overall better track record, but what we've seen of Maine and Gaub both of them seem to have better stuff than Russell. I know that Gaub is with Marmol, Shark, and Casey Weathers in the great stuff but spotty at best control but if he can fix it, could Rusell be the odd man out?
  9. I guess a thread about Manny Ramirez is the perfect place for this seeing as it's out of left field.
  10. Yeah. He said he "respects MLB's objections". Like an innocent guy who got put away for 10 years would say he respects the criminal justice system. No innocent man would say that. If it were me and I were innocent, I certainly would not be saying I respected anything about the MLB. And I'd love to hear any plausible explanation for his innocence besides intentionally planted evidence. Plus once he retires, he can start work on his novel, If I Did It, a "fictional" account of how he juiced up to enhance his performance and ultimately got off scott free.
  11. for some reason, my auto-renew didn't go through. And I didn't get a notice that it was up. Other than the expired notice when I went there, of course. #-o I actually tried to buy it, but it was too complicated because you still had the rights to buy it back, and it would've been a dick move. Holy [expletive], I half jokingly assumed you had tried to do this. I can just imagine the leopard print template and 70's porn music in the background.
  12. I know I'm a week late to this party, but what's the point of releasing a 21 year old with the ceiling that Lopez has? He's not costing so much as a 40 man roster spot. He's not blocking anyone. Why not just give him the chance to turn it around, even if it was a personel or coachability issue.
  13. The pitching won't be worse because the guys we were throwing out there last year were #6, #7, & #8 quality starters. Maholm, Wood, Volstad, Wells, and Samardzija are at least #5 starters on most teams and maybe #4, but we are putting them at #3-#5. What sort of numbers would you expect out of a #3 starter? Edit: I somewhat agree with you, but only in the current depressed offensive environment, and one of them will likely be good enough to be a #3 (but it's impossible to tell which one right now). Of course that same bad offensive environment will help the Cubs lineup to not be as horrific as it would have been in the middle of the decade. Contrary to what Ricketts is saying, this team is rebuilding. I'm sure they're hoping to have Wells and Maholm show enough to make them trade bait at some point. I would think developing Wood, Volstad, Samardzija, McNutt, etc. into solid BOR starters for next year while adding a FOR starter is the plan for next year. They would still have to add a MOR guy to be serious about possibly contending next year. A healthy Maholm could be that MOR guy.
  14. Major League Baseballs Drew Peterson.
  15. It was all just a big misunderstanding. A 4 month long misunderstanding.
  16. While offensive output is sure to be down, it's hard to imagine the pitching being worse considering the carousel of junkballers and middle relievers that made up the back end of the rotation last year.
  17. Buck up. If anyone knows what its like to learn that the best hitter of their lifetime was a cheater despite lack of concrete evidence it's us. I don't know why you think awareness of Bonds is especially high with Cubs fans, but OK. I meant it as the best Cubs hitter of our time.
  18. And you're sure that he didn't move out of his house because it's in Kenosha?
  19. Rumor has it, he also has an affinity for Hitler and tasteful clothing.
  20. Buck up. If anyone knows what its like to learn that the best hitter of their lifetime was a cheater despite lack of concrete evidence it's us.
  21. I'm not sure our offense is any better than that one, to be honest. It's really atrocious. It could be very atrocious, but it could surprise us. Give us at least 2010 Soriano and Soto and a .775-.800 OPS from Stewart and we could end up scoring some runs here and there. Still, our best bet at relevance in 2012 will be pitching. The 3-5 rotation spots will be a big X factor.
  22. Yeah, he better be mentally tough. If he comes out of the gate slow all hell is going to be unleashed on him from the media and non-Brewers fans. But on the other hand, if his numbers don't decline, he'll reserve the right to be an even bigger douche than he already is.
  23. Really? I've never had much trouble finding any. Even if he didn't do that stupid title belt thing his green and yellow football uniform would be enough for me.
  24. I don't hate this, relatively speaking. I love 1-2. Like 6-7, especially if we can at least strike silver wit Stewart. If we could get a lefty platoon mate for Soriano, I'd like 5 a lot more. 8-whatever. It's the 3-4 which are an eye sore. Garza-Demp-Maholm-Wood-Volstad could end up a formiddable rotation if the stars align and all goes our way. Same goes for the lineup, with DeJesus, LaHair, Soriano, Soto, and Stewart all huge ?s. We could hover around .500 and in July trade for some guy we never even thought about in the offseason. Add the right amount sugar, and Kool-Aid is a wonderful beverage. I would avoid that Kool-Aid that has a 2012 on it because it needs way to much sugar to sweeten it. I think that we need to admit while there's no reason to be over optimistic, this isn't the epically awful Rachel Phelps team that some had been making it out to be.
