I don't know that dealing Soriano for little is going to severely alter our chances of winning in the short or long term. He's probably not going to be particularly productive over the entirety of this, or especially next, season and his production can probably be replaced relatively easily on the FA market. I'm hoping Theo/Hoyer are working the phones hard with Ned Colletti and GMs like that who may overreact to this torrid streak by Soriano. If they could move him for something of value because of this hot streak, that'd be pretty awesome. Then go get Upton in the offseason and go with BJax/Upton/DeJesus next season. Nobody is going to over react to the hot streak, but if they could see him as what he is, a guy who his lefties well and is still capable of hitting at least 20 HR. They could very well give up 2-3 low level guys.

Let's pick him up and then trade him for another crappy reliever.

Knees still hobbled...still crazy expensive...still Alfonso Soriano...value not changing. Eh, trade him to an AL team to be a DH and at least the exploded knees might matter less. Otherwise, yeah. Soriano hot streaks are still fun to watch. It hasn't been just a Soriano hot streak. He's given steady production since the beginning of May, and I don't remember that type of thing from him since 2008. There are a lot of AL teams that should show interest assuming they don't have to take on much if any salary.

That assumes that we are trying to put together a winning team in the near future. Even if we have a winning team by next season, what are the chances that he'll remain healthy and productive? He's going to be 37. Players don't tend to get better when they hit that age.

We've always seen Sorianos insane hot streaks and then the bottom drops out, but he's been doing well since the beginning of May, and it seems to me as though it's been his longest overall stretch since 2008.

The answer to our woes is clear. Stop trailing at the end of the 7th inning.

Both Shoulders and Vogelbach are probably ahead of Gretzky on the totem pole. I could see Vogelbach up in Boise possibly but Gretzky certainly will be in Mesa. I thought that Shoulders also plays a bit of OF. Does Gretzky play anything besides 1B?

I wonder if it'd be different without the knee injury. There are four teams with qualified DH with OPS over .720. Three of the four teams with qualified DH 65+ OPS points below Soriano are teams hoping for the playoffs (Texas, Detroit, Tampa) Someone's got to be able to use him. But there was also an earlier report that Detroit has interest but was only willing to take on 5 mil total, although we never hear what they were offering in terms of prospects or players. For all we know tried to offer us Inge assuming it was before they cut him.

How do you figure? Just thinking back to the A's sneaking under the radar and getting Cespedes in one of the offseason's many WTF moments. If willing to overpay, it's the type of bidding war in which a small market team could beat out the big market teams.

Crap, Yankees and Dodgers are always tough to bid against and the Braves are the type if team to sneak in and beat everyone else out.

Do the stats back that? I know there is a pretty small sample size. I hear people say that he is a great fielder all the time, but is that just because he is fast and hustles? Or is he really a good fielder? I know what you're saying. I mean that in the sense that he's gritty and gives it his all ala Reed Johnson, Sam Fuld , and various other small white guys that managers and casual fans love. Setting his race and your prejudice of Cub fans aside...(we liked that slap hitting white boy Juan Pierre, too :D ) ...the questions still stand... ...and an additional thought.. Is it 'message board logic' to bad mouth guys like Aramis Ramirez for NOT hustling and ridicule admiration for the Tony Campanas FOR hustling..? :roll: If you look down a few posts, I also brought up white boys Willie Wilson, Rajai Davis, and Joey Gathright as potential comps. As for "hustling", the Aramis Ramirezes of the world don't have to go overboard on it because they bring value to their team without crashing into walls and bending their hat brims, or bending their body in half ala Rick Ankiel (that one still makes me cringe). They've already stated that he's not going to be called up for the interleague games only to be sent back down. Once he's called up later this month, he's here for good. I thought that it was around the time of the draft when it wouldn't impact his service time. Too bad. This would have been a good opportunity to play Soriano at DH(which they said he will), Rizzo at 1st, and let LaHair log a few innings in LF, and if it appears too disaterous, put in Johnson as a defensive sub. The only reason could otherwise see not to call him up is if they really don't see LaHair having any chance at LH at LF and are trying to move him and want him to keep at 1st until they do.

Yeah, yeah it was a ticked off heating the moment meatballish comment. While I'm far from sold on Stewart, I'm all for giving him the rest of the season. Nobody expects him to live up to the hype once surrounding him, but I think he has a shot to get back to his 2010 form, and I question whether Josh Vitters will ever come near those kind of numbers. I'd still like to see Cardenas get regular playing time in Iowa though. Valbuena would likely be better suited for the role he currently fills.
