  1. Let's be fair, it fooled WSR. The only thing he's fooled me into thinking is that he deserves a few more starts until we move onto the next option that likely won't be any better. My reasoning for wanting to see him get a chance wasn't that I thought he could be anything special. It was that Casey Coleman's had enough chances. Rodrigo Lopez or Ryan Rowand Smith would be a waste of the opportunity. Raley, Rusin, and Struck will each be rule 5 eligible in the Winter. Can't protect them all, so the time had come to start cycling through these guys rather than try and catch the Brewers for 4th place with some 36 year old they dug out of the frontier league.
  2. You don't have to be Greg Maddux to get by without blazing stuff. This Mike Fiers character in the Brewers seems to top out in the mid-high 80's, but nobody seems to have been able to figure him out. The guys pitched 80 innings with 80 K, 16 BB, 1.80 ERA and 1.013 WHIP with like an 87 MPH fastball.
  3. Similarly to what they do in spring training and minor league rehab assignment, is it possible that the reason for Castro's struggles at the plate is that theyre having him focus more so on pitch recognition and plate dicipline than hitting itself? BA & SLG have never been a problem for him. OBP has been. I mentioned this about Jackson yesterday, but it could go for all of the young players being counted on long term. With the playoff hopes dead and rotting, they could be using this as extended-extended spring training to work on things, but pitchers are actually trying to get them out instead of work on their own stuff.
  4. If he's on an innings cap and starting in the minors, chances are we won't see him in September. The best bet to see him with Chicago would be July sometime before he gets shut down. And that's just what they should do. His value is a s a starter, so there's no reason to start him in the big leagues as a reliever just to have him up here, and then stretch him out in the future. If he starts in Iowa or Tenn at 2-4 innings per game and works his way up, that's fine by me. Remember, he's only 21.
  5. This Daury Torrez continues to fascinate me. between 2 DSL seasons, he's pitched in 105 innings and given up 9 BBs. to 73 Ks. To put that into perspective, Zach Rosscup walked 5 guys in 2.2 IP last night. And Jenner Emterio, 19 has a line of .342/.437/.483 with 2 HR in 144 AB. At 18 in their 1st pro seasons, Gioskar Amaya's was .282/.375/.353 1 HR and Marco Hernandez .286/.348/.388 2 HR.
  6. Maybe to visit friends, but then he'll be back with the Cubs by the next game because THESE GAMES MEAN NOTHING and this is essentially extended-extended Spring Training for him only pitchers are trying to get him out as opposed to work on their mechanics. Striking out 3-4 times per game vs. big league pitching is more beneficial to him and the organization than if he were to be striking out 2-3 times per game vs. PCL junk-ballers.
  7. We should probably go back to Casey Coleman who's been awful for parts of 3 seasons instead of a guy who was awful for 2 innings.
  8. On the other end of the spectrum, 5 Smokies pitchers have combined to give up 11 BBs through 6.
  9. If we were to trade him, I'd take a gamble and wait a year. If he can have two years like this, teams will really start to take him seriously. Especially looking at all of the middle infield prospects that we have throughout the system, none of which appear big league ready just yet, but if nothing esle, Logan Watkins could be a band-aid for a few years while we wait on one of Hernandez, Amaya, Torreyes to be ready. Maybe even Bruno. Cubs fans would eat the little bugger up like a $9 hot dog. But you decrease his value by subtracting one year of team control and you run the risk of him not hitting enough to be seen as an every day player. I'd like to see them sell high on Barney, in the right deal of course. He's under control through 2017, so I don't know if the difference in a single year of control would be more valuable than him having back to back 4-5 WAR seasons. The problem is, to really max out his trade value he should be playing SS, which isn't an option for obvious reasons. I do love the idea of the A's as a trade partner. They have a lot of what we need.
  10. Castro goes 0-5 and sees a grand total of 7 pitches.
  11. Still, if we're talking hypothetical, assuming Garza and Vizcaino were both to enter 2013 fully healthy, Garza/Vizcaino/Shark/Wood/rookie or reclamation would be an equal or better rotation. Hell, plug a an inning-of doom avoiding Volstad into the 5 spot and we're set.
  12. It's early and I havnt had my coffee, so the answer to this question is likely an obvious one: who the hell is Perez? Martin most likely. Are we talking 21 year old Ranger's stud prosepct Martin Perez, and if so, how are we getting him? Or are we talking Martin Perez who pitched in the Cubs farm system between 1955-1960 according to BBR? He's 79 years old and would only be a marginal upgrade over Casey Coleman.
  13. Wasnt this one our proposed Garza trade targets?
  15. Agree fully. Especially with Struck, another Rule 5 eligible who could potentially be plucked, and when an organization is as low on pitching as ours, we need every potantial 4-6 starter we have.
  16. He must be a very distant 2nd, assuming you go by dWAR. Ozzie Smith has a 44.5 career dWAR in 19 seasons, to Omar's 28.1 in 24 and counting. Again, depending on how you much you value dWAR, Ozzie Smith was 25 in his 3rd full big league season, in which he posted a 3.5 dWAR. Darwin Barney is 26 in his 2nd full season, with a 3.2 dWAR with more than 1/3 to go. Vizquel's career high was 2.5. I'm not saying that Barney is Ozzie Smith. Probably not even Vizquel. And I really don't know how dWAR even works, but it's pretty impressive, on paper anyway.
  17. I'm really thinking that this is Darwin Barney, and that's by no means a bad thing. His offense is far from unsustainable, and there's no reason to believe that his defense will regress. Bascally, we have Ozzie Smiths bat with Omar Vizquels glove. I'll happily take it for years to come.
  18. I really doubt that. You could make an argument that Shark/Wood would be better than the duo of Guzman/Tapani, but mainly just because Shark will probably be a decent amount better than Guzman. Wood isn't likely to be better than, or even as good as, Tapani. The bottom of the older rotation (Hibbard/Trachsel/Morgan) is unquestionably better than Germano/Volstad/Raley ever could be. If Volstad ever learns to avoid the inning of doom, he could be a very good 3-4 starter. The thing about every one of the 90's guys is that each gave us a few good seasons, but long term, every one of them was a band-aid. Aside from Shark, and maybe Wood these guys probably are too. Certainly Germano.
  19. It's early and I havnt had my coffee, so the answer to this question is likely an obvious one: who the hell is Perez?
  20. Seriously Starlin, do you plan on getting another hit this season or should we look forward to 2 months of Cesar [expletive] Izturis?
  21. True. It's still better than the current rotation, though. Currently, but it has 2 rookies, one of whom has yet to throw a big league pitch, 1 guy who's a full time starter for the first time and 2 young pitchers still trying to establish themselves. If this were to be the Cubs rotation for the next 5 years, and I pray to every deity imagineable that it isn't, there's a chance that it could be better.
  22. Career ERA+: Shark - 94 Wood - 91 Volstad - 86 Germano - 83 Raley - 3.74 ERA/1.428 WHIP Jose Guzman - 102 Kevin Tapani - 101 Steve Trachsel - 99 Greg Hibbard - 98 Mike Morgan - 97 The fact that when putting together a 5 man rotation from 5 seasons worth of Cubs teams, and that's the best you came up with speaks volumes about the Cubs teams of that era.
  23. Is Dae Eun Rhee even in our top 50 anymore?
