  1. When it comes prospects acquired via trade, unless we're talking about some 26-28 year old junk junk throw in, there's likely a lot of scouting involved that leads to acquiring the guy as opposed to another of the trade partner's fringe guys. If nothing else, that alone is reason enough for me to think that he has at least back of the rotation potential.
  2. It's almost fitting that on his way out the door Hendry's selects The One Toolsy Hacker To Rule Them All. Corey Patterson will forever hold that title. At least Corey had a moderately respectable big league career. Ryan Harvey should trump Corey. So we're already comparing Baez to epic-failures past?
  3. -The past 10 days, Christian Villanueva's hitting .417/.463/.667, bringing his season totals to .259/.327/.400. Very nice to see considering where he was prior to the hot streak. On the less happy side of that coin, the past 10 days, Torreyes at .162/.304/.243. -I'm wondering if next time we need a reliever called up they leapfrog Rosscup over the usual AAA suspects. He's been very effective ever since coming over. Either that or try stretching him back into a starter. Last time he was a full time starter was before his injury in 2011 and he put up a 2.54 ERA 1.149 WHIP and 19/50 BB/K in 49.2 IP. Could be worth re-visiting.
  4. While I have no problem with the pick itself, knowing now that Jose Fernandez was picked just 5 picks later kind of stings. But if anyone should be kicking themselves, it's the Brewers who picked RHP Tyler Jungmann just 2 slots prior.
  5. In Iowa, Vitters is 3-3 with a 2B, Jackson 2-3 with a 2B, and Watkins 1-3 with an HR. Moscoso has K'd 8 through 5 with 0 BB, but 9 hits and 4 runs, 2 earned and was just lifted for a PH. there are 5 other guys playing as well.
  6. When Jorge Soler brushed his teeth this morning he was hitting .259, with I believe a sub .800 OPS. 7-8 including a 2B and HR later, he's at .296 with an OPS around .900 (was .895 after game 1)
  7. I was planning on doing that. I'm going to handle it differently this time around, though. In our collective defense, it would be hard for it not to be a bit skewed seeing as 4 of our top 12 have been hurt or missing all season.
  8. None of the prospects are slumping. They're just taking a break while the big league team plays like a big league team.
  9. The White Sox have Alex Rios as well who's been great since last season. They could also move Konerko, which would send White Sox fans to the ledges in droves. Jesse Crain would be a nice option for contenders too. As for Peavy, his contract coupled with health history would make him difficult to move. A different market from what we have to offer. One of the big market teams could bite, as long as they're willing to give up a ton of prospects and/or cash. A lot of teams looking to bolster their rotation would likely prefer a minor commitment like Garza and decide if the want to extend him when the time comes.
  10. He was placed on the DL at the end of spring. Not sure what his injury was or if it's long-term because he isn't on any rosters. Pre-existing condition? That would explain why we got him for Jeff Baker. That's my thought as well. That he may have been damaged goods when he was aquired. It didn't take long for him to wind up hurt. But if so, we were likely well aware of it all along. For a month of Jeff Baker, we really couldn't lose.
  11. Hey, the waving, Go Cubs Go singing, brown player hating, small white player loving non-fans who are just in it for the party are a huge source of revenue, especially when nobody else is going to the games.
  12. He was placed on the DL at the end of spring. Not sure what his injury was or if it's long-term because he isn't on any rosters. Pre-existing condition? That would explain why we got him for Jeff Baker.
  13. If Taiwan Easterling somehow blossoms into a big league regular, we may have to have women sign consent forms before entering Wrigley.
  14. And they have Wacha and Martinez and I think Rosenthal could end up a starter still but at the least be an elite late innings guy. Our best might be for Dusty Baker to take over as their manager.
  15. Random question: what are the whereabouts of that Carenno fellow we got for Jeff Baker?
  16. These past few weeks have been the most I've enjoyed the Cubs since that brief and shining moment in August of aught-nine when we pulled into a 1st place tie.
  17. Vogelbach went 2-4 and Shoulders 1-3 with a BB. Both K'd twice. And Contreras is quietly hitting .284/.379/.543 with 5 HR. I guess I'm getting intrigued by Nathan Dorris and his incredibly angry mug shot. In 14.1 IP he has 3/15 BB/K and a 1.88 ERA.
  18. I'd rather just go by whole-season stat lines than try to parse hot streaks and such. Too much room to insert bias when you do that. For example, Villanueva had an OPS of .578 after 5/5, but is now up to .706. In the 29 PAs that rose his OPS 128 points: 21% K, 3% BB, 1 HR, .579 BABIP. Is he really performing any better? For his season totals, he doesn't have any blaring black holes like Baez's K rate. It's just a general pile of mediocrity, and mediocre AA stats is not a good sign for a hopeful MLB career. This is why I'm not ready to cast aside Villanueva. Horrible start, hot the past 10 days or so. That's why I'm saying that a stat line can drastically change this time of year, so it's really around the half when things start to stabilize.
  19. Any interest depending on the cost, assuming they're ready to move him? With the emergence of Valbuena, Chisenhall is really kind of redundant. Yeah, I wanted him prior to the season, now I think he'd be a downgrade. Couldn't we also use Valbuena at 2nd and Barney as a utility infielder or SS when Dale has Starlin on punishment?
  20. Why would any of those spots be locked in? Since the Rizzo extension, there's been talk that Shark and Wood are up next. Not sure how much base there is to it though.
  21. Is it pretty safe to assume that any DSL alumni that make it stateside are somewhat well regarded by the organization?
