    This facility will serve the Cubs for 30 years. Today's intense demand for ST tickets may well erode in coming seasons, especially as the Cubs' national fandom declines absent the reach of 160 games on WGN and the presence of expansion teams in places like Phoenix and Denver, places in which large numbers of western fans latched onto the team in the 1980s. The Cubs have to prepare for a future in which they may need to work to build spring crowds. Naples is 500 miles closer to Wrigley Field, the Grapefruit schedule is more interesting and Florida is a longstanding vacation destination. There's no telling what teams will be around in 30 years, whether they will be in Florida either. And Arizona is a longtime vacation destination as well. The spring training schedule just doesn't matter. It's about getting the better facility (structurally and financially).

    :pig: jersey kinda has a point though, people are pissed off at hamels right now and feel like he quit on the team (which he didn't, but whatever). that being said, the phillies are a smart, well-run organization and i'd be very surprised if they don't tell hamels to just relax and recharge his batteries in the offseason. the fans are fickle but they also know that hamels was probably the biggest reason that they won in 2008, and i don't think there's really much of a groundswell to run him out of town. Yeah, I don't actually think anything can come of it, which is why i said "grow the dislike", like some sort of CIA funded coup. I haven't been around a lot of Phillies fans recently, but the ones I do know are all bitching about him. My guess is that on top of the fact he was so good last year, they will realize they need the pitching.

    Last year's option was Samardzija, Marshall and Wells. I'm not sure how these options are better. And they are going into it with a lesser staff (injured Lilly and likely no Harden).

    Detroit turned around and became a WS contender, Pittsburgh stayed Pittsburgh. There's nothing to be said for trying to fool your fans into thinking you're trying by striving for mediocrity. You think it was the 43 win season that sent Detroit to the top? Didn't say that. But your example was weak. Nobody cares about mediocrity. Fans aren't going to salute a less crappy team. Losing is losing.

    Shark definitely needs work but Marshall and Gorzelanny getting starts aren't necessarily bad things. Id be fine with either Marshall or Gorz as a 5th starter, but Wells/Marshall/Gorz as 3/4/5 doesnt exactly make for a steller pitching staff. Uh, of course not. When does using backups ever make for a stellar pitching staff? The Cubs are hopefully in the situation where using the backups is tolerable as opposed to "well, now we're [expletive]." Right, but as a team that seemingly can't wait to let Harden go, and who has to hope for everything to go right with an injury to a 30-something pitcher for him to pitch in April, it's not like they are just going to be using these guys as backups. Guys are going to get lots of starts who should otherwise probably be 6th starters.

    I feel like the only place I see his name is on this site. I don't know anything about him. But looking at his career he was a productive minor leaguer and has been a decent hitter outside of south Florida. And he is just now entering his prime. He is kind of intriguing. But as a lefty, with Fukudome already needing platoon help, I don't see a fit.

    Somebody needs to figure out how to grow the Philly dislike for Cole Hamels right now into a need to move him and then figure out a way to turn the Bradley dump into a Hamels acquisition.

    They dominated in a tough division, and the money actually brought results. I think you can criticize and say what you want about the money, but the only other team that got a vote, Boston, spent a ton themselves. There's no question the Yankees are the team of the decade and their results were fantastic. The luck nature of the playoffs negates any negativity of only winning 2 WS with 9 playoff appearances. the red sox spent "only" $1.168B, or about more than $50M less per season, and appeared in only one fewer playoff and won the same number of world series. The WS totals are not that noteworthy, given the luck involved in moving on in the playoffs. NY spent a lot, but there's no doubt their results were better. Boston spent a hell of a lot more than the Cardinals, but it's debatable if their results were any better. Cost efficient isnt' the same as the best team.

    I would be very disappointed with ReyO 2.0. You can't justify a 60 OPS+ in your lineup everyday, especially not the Cubs who have no stars that can carry the team, and none on the horizon.

    no Yeah I wouldn't assume that just yet, maybe we have a castro instead of a jeter or han ram. I'm excited about Castro too but you have to get a bigger sample size before biting into the hype. The most exciting part i got from the whole post is how big the cubs expect Castro to grow into. If he become 6'3 195-200lbs, I'd imagine he'd lean more towards a Han Ram than Jeter. if he pans out and reaches his ceiling then maybe he's a jeter (sure-fire hall of fame ss) or han ram (hall of fame ss if he keeps this up another several years). castro could also be an edgar renteria (solid ss but not hall of fame) or he could be the next rey ordonez. sometimes highly-touted prospects bust. I would think maybe Alex Gonzalez (Toronto/Cubs) instead of ReyO. Ordonez was a midget who never came close to being productive. Gonzo at least flirted with being a productive SS from time to time, was a bigger guy. Alex struck out more, and was moderately productive in the minors. Ordonez only got the job becaus of his glove, he sucked hitting. Castro has been much better than both by the way. I'm trying to stay reasonable about him, but I'm definitely optimistic.

    nobody. that's a big reason why people hate the yankees; they have this sense of arrogance and entitlement about winning the championship. i guess it's kind of like michael bloomberg - when you wildly outspend everyone you expect to win. In NY people don't really seem to care either.

    You are missing the point. Yes, revenue matters. But the competition does not. They will sell their spring tickets whether they are in Florida or Arizona. People don't care about who they are playing, they care about going to see the Cubs in spring training.

    I don't think it's possible in this era. A hall of fame caliber QB is going to play on quality teams at some point in his career. He might be like Marino and never win it all while having several mediocre seasons, or Brees and have an inconsistent team that can win or lose 10+ in any season. But if he has a HOF type career, his team is going to have success.

    It's possible, but the Cubs, while aggressive with some guys, have been fairly, for lack of a better word, careful (not the best word choice but can't think of anything else right now) with Vitters in not trying to force too much. How so? He's young, and after one great month, one bad month and one good weekend, they promoted him to Daytona. Careful would have been keeping him in low-A all season.

    So hes more like the asian Kaz Matsui. and I thought that trades couldnt be made until midnight after the end of the WS. Was this a waiver deal or something? I think that it's just an agreement among owners and Selig to minimize other baseball news so that the World Series gets maximum coverage. Also to make that news on travel days.

    Honestly, it has more to do with risk than anything else. I don't expect Fuld to be much worse than Crisp, but the fact remains that maybe some scout somewhere will see a way to pitch Fuld that will near completely neutralize him. With Crisp, the odds of that happening are much lower. The book is already written. Favoring veterans isn't generally a great idea. But when the players are so similar, there is some value to experience... whether or not it's worth the difference in salary is a judgment call. I would say the complete opposite. The only time the veteran is favorable is when he's clearly better.

    A triple and a homer is nice says Goldstein, but where is the double and single he needs with it? :D On a side note(and it's actually very cool in a way that it is just that) but Vitters has hit damn well in his own right this fall. I'm starting to wonder if we see him start at Tennessee instead of repeating Daytona. He shouldn't even be considered for AA. i wouldn't say that... it depends how much he does during the offseason and how he looks in the spring. castro hit fairly well at short-season rookie ball in 2008 but i thought that jumping him to daytona was a terrible idea. as it turned out he had improved a lot during the offseason and more than held his own at high-A, and was in AA by september. But Vitters has been given a fairly aggressive path already, and there's really no benefit. Once he enters AA, it'll take one good game before the clamoring for his callup, and that's just not going to be a good thing. Let the guy have a year somewhere and actually produce for more than a month.
