  1. He'll fit right in then. Who knows they might work better than the team's bats.
  2. Unfortunately, it may balance out with a poor offensive showing.
  3. Yeah, the league min salary is a little less than 600K so yes, millions, in savings and just for that one year alone. That arb salary would influence the next and so on By the time Nico is ready for a modest payday, the Cubs will trade him to save money and play the guys we got in the Darvish trade.
  4. With Romine as the backup catcher, that bench is pretty pathetic offensively too.
  5. Interesting Story: From MLBTR: Jake Arrieta signed a one-year, $6MM deal with the Cubs last month, returning to the site of his Cy Young Award-winning prime years. Arrieta’s initial great run in Chicago could have been cut short, however, had the Marlins been willing to include J.T. Realmuto as part of a trade package with the Cubs in 2014, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal writes. The Marlins weren’t in contention in 2014 but were looking ahead to build for 2015, eyeing Arrieta as a big rotation piece. It was known at the time that the Cubs were floating Arrieta on the trade market, perhaps looking to sell high after Arrieta had turned his career around after previously being dealt from the Orioles to the Cubs. Interestingly, Realmuto was not regarded as a blue-chip minor leaguer at the time, as he didn’t appear on top-100 prospect lists from either MLB.com or Baseball America until after the 2014 season. After middling numbers in his first four pro seasons, Realmuto emerged in 2014 while playing for Miami’s Double-A affiliate and even bypassed Triple-A that year to make an 11-game MLB cameo on the Marlins’ active roster. Still, the Marlins obviously believed in Realmuto’s potential, and the trade negotiations fizzled out
  6. He's a prospect at "HIGH" A ball - South Bend.
  7. From MLBTR: The Pirates have signed righty Trevor Cahill to a one-year, $1.5MM deal, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports (Twitter link). Cahill can earn up to another $1MM in bonuses. I was hoping the Cubs would have signed him this off season. Cheap and effective as a swingman in a year full of question marks, reduced innings, etc.
  8. He'll be the new Rizzo (the old guy) when all of our 18-year-olds make the team.
  9. They were desperate to make a move after we signed Sogard.
  10. They're picking us at about 78 wins, so 90+ wins seems a little excessive. I'm not sure anyone else in the NL Central will get to 90+ wins either. I think it's certainly possible. Standard variance combined with the fact that basically any NL Central team that starts slow will quickly transition to seller mode. After the Marlins made the playoffs in a COVID-shortened season last year, anything is possible, but not likely. I can't see any NL Central team worried about a slow start because they realize that their competition is not that great and there probably is no reason to panic because of the full schedule.

  12. From MLBTR: Biertempfel names Richard Rodriguez the “Pirates reliever most likely to be traded this spring.” Rodriguez and Frazier would really strengthen the Cubs' roster. Hopefully Jed is on the phone.
  13. As I've posted before, they could have a very good year and win 90 games, if they were only playing Central Division games like last year. Unfortunately, MLB is making us play real ML teams this year.
  14. The problem is going to be what the definition of "a little money" that he's willing to sacrifice. I don't think Boras and PTR will define it similarly. boras isn't the one defining it. He may not be, but he could be pretty persuasive if the offer is too far below other offers. Boras has an ego and a reputation to uphold and Bryant knew that when he hired him. It's great to be happy where you are, but is it worth tens of millions of dollars over 5-6 years?
  15. The problem is going to be what the definition of "a little money" that he's willing to sacrifice. I don't think Boras and PTR will define it similarly.
  16. With his slash line and age, I'm not sure why he would be available.
  17. From MLBTR: Cubs are looking to add a left-handed hitting second baseman, reports Bruce Levine of 670 the Score (Twitter link). There aren’t a ton of players fitting the profile still available in free agency, unless the Cubs are interested in a reunion with Daniel Descalso or Jason Kipnis. Eric Sogard might be the cleanest fit, but he’s coming off a poor season with the Brewers. Travis Shaw remains on the open market as well; he’s primarily a corner infielder but has some experience at the keystone. Otherwise, Chicago might be left looking to the trade market to address the issue. I sure don't know why it's taking so long to trade for Frazier as per our earlier discussion. Send the Pirates Norwood and Short or some other cheap, young spare pieces we have for him.
  18. I can't see Hoyer trading Bryant to a division rival.
  19. Justin Turner and 1 of Odorizzi, Walker or Jake would be the only thing where I could see that we could come away with as good or better of a team with moving Bryant then using the money to add stuff. Hopefully, they're getting something in return from the Met's because I don't trust PTR to spend the money after dumping Bryant.
  20. Yeah, but think how much money those teams are spending on payroll.
  21. Plus an interesting exchange of money. Those are two ugly contracts.
  22. As I've posted before, Frazier has been easily available and would have helped the Cubs for the last two years. I don't know what Jed is waiting for. As for the others, Marquez isn't going to happen and the other two will be great if we're in a position to add rentals. As for Williams, a good first half makes Davies and Bryant available if we're "out" of it.
  23. From MLBTR: "It seems Bradley and agent Scott Boras are hoping to leverage strong demand into a much longer deal than might have been anticipated. Bradley is “seeking a significant contract, perhaps beyond four years,” sources tell Mike Puma of the New York Post (via Twitter)." Okay, how about $10 million over 5 year?
  24. Trading for Frazier has made a lot of sense for the last couple of years. The Pirates are selling off everybody, so let's take advantage of the situation. How about Frazier + one of their other "expensive" players (Kuhl, Rodriguez, Brault) for Vargas + Norwood/Underwood + Short?
