  1. Castellanos was great for the whole time he was a Cub. Darvish was recovering in 2018, our 2nd best starter in 2019, and amazing in 2020. So except for Darvish recovering in 2018, I would say they were great the whole time. "the whole time he was a cub" They acquired him for part of a season to add to the offense and he not only delivered, but was outstanding. That's what Tom was talking about.
  2. As soon as word gets out that Means is available, there would be a bidding war among 10-12 teams, so you would have to really up the ante.
  3. In that case are we talking the combined 4-5 months it went great or the whole time? Castellanos was great for the whole time he was a Cub. 4. I don't think people were miserable with their performances.
  5. The Cubs will be the ones trading one of the best third basemen in the game and a Cy Young finalist in the same year for prospects and cah.
  6. Some of those guys make way too much money for PTR. Bieber is young and cheap, so I don't see why they would trade him. If Bryant is set for the OF, we can just re-sign Duffy as a much cheaper option than spending a lot on prospects and cash for Ramirez (I agree Ramirez is great, but unrealistic).
  7. Obviously it's hard to predict what's going to happen in the next 6 weeks, but I don't expect anything definitive happening with the Cubs. The Cubs can certainly compete with most of those teams. Playing .500ish keeps them squarely in contention and doesn't scream "buy" or "sell".
  8. No big surprise because this is Bryant when he's healthy. It will be interesting to see what the Cubs do at the deadline because it looks like they will be right about where everyone figured they would be - in contention in a crowded NL Central. I do wonder if it just makes sense to keep all 3 of them and let them go into FA. Make an honest effort to resign them but if they walk, the possibility of getting a 2nd and 5th round pick for each of them isn't terrible compared to the return they might get at the deadline. I just don't want Bryant to go to the Padres who, as a revenue sharing team, would only net the Cubs their 3rd best pick instead of 2nd and 5th. Keep all 3, trade Kimbrel (saving app. $8 million) for a solid package and then see what happens with negotiations after the season.

  10. From MLBTR: The core of the Cubs’ 2016 World Series club is nearing the end of its tenure in Chicago, and president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said Thursday that there are no current extension talks with any members of that core (Twitter link via 670 The Score’s Bruce Levine). Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant and Javier Baez are all slated to become free agents at season’s end, while catcher Willson Contreras hits the market following the 2022 season.
  11. Unfortunately, it looks like he may do it for another team.
  12. Whatever we paid, we overpaid.
  13. I hope you're right because of the same reasons: they have a position to fill and they're in a weak division.
  14. Everyone makes alot of sense. He can leadoff, hit cleanup, hit anywhere else in the lineup, start at 5 different positions including CF, in a typical year is one of the handful best offensive players in either league, is one of the few who can at least threaten a .400 OBP year in and year out, is one of the fewer still who can pull that off while still being able to run and defend well, he's missed the playoffs once, won a WS, been the MVP of the best team in the league etc etc etc. Bryant makes alot of sense for every team in baseball that has any desire or incentive to put a winning team on the field The WS make the most sense because they've lost two offensive threats for an extended period at positions that Bryant can play. The fact that they're in a weak division makes it even more likely. It just comes down to which team offers the best package.
  15. The White Sox make a lot of sense, but I think the Cubs might be reluctant to getting a bad deal from their crosstown rivals while Bryant helps them to the playoffs.
  16. Yeah, a whole bunch of mediocrity with some major injuries thrown in to slow down some of the better teams.
  17. Quick response from the medical team on Happ's injury from the collision. :-"
  18. This seems like an underrated part of the whole narrative. He's making $19.5 this year, hardly a huge gap between what he'll get in an unfriendly FA market He should be able to get a higher average salary for FA, but it won't be for a longer number of years.
  19. Any team that's trading for a rental as good as Bryant should certainly be near contention with the hope Bryant will make the difference (which he probably will).
  20. Reinsdorf, LaRussa, and Pujols can sit around and talk about "the good old days" together.
  21. We'll see him get healthy after trading him and he'll have multiple MVP-type seasons and win a few WS rings.
  22. Totally agree. I think if things stay on their current trajectory he's the most likely guy to be traded after KB. They should extend KB because they aren’t getting a better player back or likely getting one anytime soon and his price is still probably decent. His comp for a trade is probably Machado to the Dodgers a few years back? That was a garbage return. I’d rather do everything to extend him and if not get the comp pick. It won't happen, but trade Baez, Kimbrel, and Pederson and use the savings plus whatever they were going to offer Baez to extend Bryant. Hoerner plays short, Bryant in LF, re-sign Duffy for 3B, and keep Marisnick as 4th OF. That may not be a WS winner for next year, but they would be watchable.
  23. What are they going to do when they've DFA all the projects? Go to the Dollar Tree and sign some more.
  24. I’m encouraged by the start too, but it’s 71 plate appearances. As long as he’s healthy this is what he is. A very good baseball player. Every stretch of him being bad was always tied to an injury. I want him extended more than anyone. He'll be traded for a couple of 18-year-olds in rookie ball, but it won't be because of money.
  25. From MLBTR: The Reds announced Wednesday that right-hander Cam Bedrosian has rejected an outright assignment to their alternate site after clearing waivers. He’s now a free agent and is free to sign with any team. He might be an interesting pickup to help out in the bullpen.
