  1. Kendall has been working on his throws to 2B. He has almost perfected hitting the cutoff man (Hill) who then relays it to 2B.
  2. Another benefit of getting Furcal is that Lou might move Fonzie out of the leadoff position.
  3. I don't see how it can be anyone else. Kendall has trouble throwing the ball to the pitcher's mound. Soto rates ahead of him both offensively and defensively.
  4. For all of the trials and tribulations he's been through in his life, he deserves anything that lets him enjoy life. Of course, his biggest trial and tribulation has been being associated with the Cubs for so long.
  5. Amen! Anybody that throws a strike to Soriano must be crazy. The way to pitch to the Cubs is throw a 45-foot curve ball, throw a pitch 6" outside, or throw a head-high fastball.
  6. Found this interesting tidbit: Cubs Prior could land with Padres? The Padres must fill out the rotation. Mark Prior, Matt Clement, Brett Tomko and Josh Towers are candidates to join Jake Peavy, Chris Young and Greg Maddux. -- San Diego Union-Tribune
  7. It always bothered me when Umps had that kind of strike zone, but it really bothered me that our hitters didn't try to go to right field and our pitchers never took advantage of the outside strike. I'm not saying that it's right, but if the ump is consistently calling the outside pitch, you need to adjust your at bats and your pitching.
  8. There is very little doubt in my mind that this is the Brewer's division for the next several years. The Brewers were the popular pick for this year. The Cubs have a solid mix of vets and kids and should be competitive for a few more years with this team. With their prospects and a big budget, there is no reason they can't continue to be competitive for the forseeable future.
  9. Don't forget the resigning of Zambrano and Ramirez. How many other GMs could have resigned them for below market value. A big part of that was his relationship with these players.
  10. Yep. But I think that those deals didn't work because they would be taking a big salary back. I think if the Cubs offer Marshall and another pitcher close to the majors (Veal, Hart, Gallagher, Atkins, Holliman, Mateo) the deal could work. Braves would fill in the 4th spot in their rotation. Get another potential guy to compete for the 5th with Reyes, James, etc. And get out of Renteria's contract and can use that money and the Andruw Jones money to re-sign Teixeira and go out and get a #2-3 starter. Word is, they could have interest in Dontrelle in a trade. There was discussion on Renteria a while back and the rumors I read hinted that the Braves would want 2 major league ready prospects. Marshall plus one other good prospect ought to get it done. That's why I preferred the Renteria talk over the Tejada deals.
  11. Hope he does amazing in the playoffs, but I won't shed a tear not seeing him on the roster next season. He would have to take a pay cut to play for the Marlins.
  12. 17 is a lot of money for a guy with his numbers though. At CF he's cost effective but I'm not sure he is at Right. I'd love to have Beltran, but that salary is a little outrageous when you have Soriano in the same OF. We're starting to hint luxury tax.
  13. It depends also on why they are trying to trade the player in question. In the case of Jack Wilson they're trying to cut payroll in which case Moore and Rapada would probably have been pretty close to enough. I'm talking about a trade for Bay not Jack Wilson. Also, you would have to make a pretty decent offer because I'm sure there would be other teams looking to acquire Bay.
  14. They could have if they wouldn't have given away Scott Moore for 4 lousy starts from Steve Trachsel. I bet Pittsburgh would have found someone like Clay Rapada of interest, too. These types of trades get a pass from the sportswriters when they happen, but it is examples just like this when they come back to look really bad in hindsight. A trade with a team like Pittsburgh, desperate for QUANTITIES of young players with upside, is exactly where you could get some value for a Scott Moore or Clay Rapada. Instead of giving them away for players that will not be here on November 1st. While I agree that the Trachsel trade was ridiculous, Scott Moore and Clay Rapada would have to be the "throw-ins" in a trade for Jason Bay. Even if Pittsburgh is desperate for QUANTITIES of young players with upside, Moore and Rapada barely fit that description and would have to be packaged with 2 or 3 "can't miss" young players.
  15. I hope they pencil him in his as trade bait to improve the offense. Three lefties in the rotation are too many and I think Marshall will always be a back of the rotation type of guy. Why is three lefties in the rotation too many? Who would they replace Marshall with? Prior will be trying to make another comeback, but they still need a decent fallback option if he gets injured again, which isn't that unlikely. 3 lefties in a rotation is bad because the majority of hitters are right-handed and most teams do much better against lefties (except the Cubs). It might be different if you have a lefty with exceptional stuff (Santana, Koufax, etc.), but Lilly, Hill, and Marshall don't fall into the "exceptional" category.
  16. It all depends if the team wants to go with 4 starters or not. If there's only 3, they won't put Marquis on as a reliever. If 4, he'll be the 4th guy. Remember also that the roster can change from round to round so if the Cubs want to use 4 starters in one round and then 3 the next, they always could bring Marquis for one series and leave him off of another. I was going to say the same thing. If Lou chooses to us a four man rotation, who do you start for Game 4 if it's not Marquis? Steve Traschel? Basically what the decision is going to come down to for Lou is who he thinks will be more effective in Game 4: Z on 3 days rest or Marquis/Traschel/?. I can't believe that Trachsel will be on the playoff roster, no matter how bad Marquis has been. If he is, somebody needs to examine Lou for senility.
  17. I've been saying this since midseason. If he would have traded Crede last year, Konerko, Dye, Contreras at midseason, and Garland/Vasquez and Uribe this winter, he would be loaded and ready to compete in 2009. Instead he looks like he's bringing back pretty much the same team that looked terrible this year. Crede (last year), Konerko, Dye, and Garland/Vasquez would get you at least 5 quality prospects and young players.
  18. It's a good thing this guy drives in a ton of runs because his defense allows a ton of runs. He is a guy born to be a DH especially with his attitude and conditioning regimen.
  19. I like Bay as much as the next guy, but that package seems like too much. Yeah, take Marmol out of the package. Marmol should be untouchable this off season.
  20. There is no way to predict what will happen in the playoffs and WS. At this point, it's just a matter of who gets 1 or 2 players hot for a few weeks. What everyone is argueing about is which team is better "on paper". Players like Zambrano, Lilly, Hill, DLee, Soriano, and Ramirez could totally dominate for a few weeks or totally suck. The same could be said about any other playoff team's players.
  21. I just hope the final results are the same for the 2007 Cubs as they were for the 2006 Cards. As has been stated before, just get into the playoffs because everything after that is a crapshoot.
  22. So are you saying that Trachsel won't be a type A free agent when he leaves?
  23. I was ready to post the same comment about Lou's decisions in this series. Murton has really produced in the second half and Lou starts Monroe makes absolutely no sense. All of us have discussed Trachsel ad nauseum. Also, I don't understand any discussion of Kendall starting over Soto for the rest of the season and into the playoffs. I don't think I've seen Kendall throw to 2nd without bouncing it yet. Kendall should be used as a pinch hitter the rest of the way. The umpires certainly didn't have a great series in Florida either.
  24. Using this rumor and speculation from other posters, by trading packages involving players such as DLee, Marshall, Gallagher, Cedeno, Murton, Patterson, Fontenot, and a few other young pitchers, the Cubs could end up with this lineup: Soriano LF Renteria SS Bay RF Ramirez 3B Loney 1B Kemp CF Derosa 2B Soto C Theriot Utility IF Possibly offer Pie in a package deal for a solid young starting pitcher. While I would hate to lose players like DLee and Murton, I would think this lineup would certainly be contenders.
  25. I found this interesting rumor. Bay is coming off of a down year, but is certainly a power-hitting corner OF. Can he play RF? What kind of package would the Pirates want? Pirates open to trading OF Bay? Pirates president Frank Coonelly was asked if the Pirates would consider a Colon-type trade by moving a premium piece such as outfielder Jason Bay, who is due $13.25 million the next two seasons at a position where the team has growing options. "You have to remember the team in Cleveland at that time was much different than the team we have here," Coonelly said, referring to the Indians' old age and high payroll. "Having said that, I think every team, particularly in a market like Pittsburgh, has to acquire as much premier talent as possible. One way to acquire premium talent is via trades of veteran players for younger players, so that is an avenue I expect Neal will certainly consider. But that's not saying anybody's going to look to trade Jason Bay this offseason, because we're not in the position Cleveland was in." -- Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
