  1. Padres probably ask for a little more, but that seems like a good trade. Here we are again, doing all of Hendry's work. How about changing it a little bit: Cubs get: Khalil Greene, Damaso Marte Padres get: Xavier Nady, Jack Wilson Pirates get: Chase Headley, Michael Barrett, Sean Gallagher, Ronny Cedeno, Eric Patterson The Padres are geting screwed in that deal. Giving up Greene, Headley, and Barrett for a platoon outfielder and an average shortstop? Let's add in Jack Morris to the Padres and the Pirates save a ton of money in the deal. You mean Matt Morris? And I really don't see what use the Padres would have for him with their rotation fairly set. Yeah, I meant Matt Morris. The Padres depth chart on ESPN only lists 4 starters and they have been looking at Prior. They would end up with a good corner OF, a decent replacement at SS, and a decent end-of-the rotation starter. Maybe the Bucs would send Bay instead of Nady, but I doubt it.

  4. And it should have ended when it got off the topic, which was about 13 pages ago.
  5. Not in the AL Central. The Tigers and Indians are way ahead of the Twins who are miles ahead of the White Sox and Royals. I think it's rather naive to say those teams would be "way ahead" of a Twins team that featured Santana, Bedard, and Liriano at the front of the rotation and an offense led by Mauer, Morneau, Cuddyer, and Young. The Twins will probably trade Santana, but even if they don't they will be a distant third behind the Tigers and Indians. Along with Mauer, Morneau, etc., you have the likes of Craig Monroe and Adam Everett.

  7. So much for your suggestion. Why is this argument still in the "Transaction" section since it has nothing to do with transactions or the title of this thread.
  8. No matter what you think, if the Cubs are as successful this year as expected, I would think Hendry has a good shot at being rehired. Of course, there are different definitions of being "successful". If the new owner is a real "take charge" owner and comes in with a set idea of hiring certain front office people, then Hendry might be in trouble. I would think most of the ownership groups would probably want to keep him until things settled down. If by some miracle, the Cubs win the World Series, he would get a lifetime contract.
  9. The Twins don't have the money for Bedard.
  10. If Pie gets traded, you put Teahan in RF and Fukudome in CF. If we could just convince Soriano to play CF, we would be set. The earlier discussion on Murton and Teahan showed stats that were basically the same. If we need to add another prospect in addition to Marshall, Petrick/Pignatello, and Patterson to get Greinke, so be it.
  11. How about offering the Royals Murton, Marshall, Petrick/Pignatello, and Patterson for Teahan and Greinke? Do we need to add another prospect? This would get the Cubs another lefty bat and a young #4 starter. It wouldn't solve speedy leadoff problem, but I think it would be a solid move.
  12. I think that is one of the strengths of this team. Packaging some of these "spare" parts should get us an upgrade at SS or back-of-the-rotation starter. Marshall, Cedeno, and Murton are not only "moveable parts", but players who seem to be unwanted by the Cubs. I know we tend to build up our prospects, but I do believe that these three have a chance to have decent major league careers if they are given a chance to play and I can't believe there aren't some GMs that would love to have them.
  13. The worst part of the Mitchell Report is the fact that all of the people that have been mentioned in this thread could very well be on steroids. Now you have players saying that since they weren't mentioned in the report that it "proves" they didn't take steroids. What a joke.
  14. I think another strike against Marshall is that he's a lefty. I don't think Lou wants 3 lefties in the rotation again.
  15. I mentioned expanding the trade talk in the Murton for Teahan to include Greinke. I like the idea of getting a young pitcher that has some experience that might reach full potential under Rothschild. What about Santana from the Angels? He should be cheap and doesn't seem to fit in their plans.
  16. I wouldn't know, but isn't anabolic steroids illegal in this country? So are pot, cocaine, etc.
  17. I'm thinking Murton and Cedeno will probably be traded. My thoughts on the bench would be Fuld/Pagan as sub OF, Blanco (sub C), DeRosa as all-around sub and pinch hitter, Ward as power lefty pinch hitter, Mench as power righty pinch hitter, and Cedeno (or another middle IF) as sub middle IF.
  18. Since the Mitchell Report is obviously just the tip of the iceberg, how can writers vote anybody into the Hall of Fame? Many writers are saying they will not vote for Bonds and Clemens, yet how can they justify voting for anybody when they don't know the extent of the steroid and HGH use during this era. Do we know for sure that Greg Maddux, ARod, Tony Gwynn, or Cal Ripken didn't use performance enhancing drugs? If Selig takes Mitchell's recommendation about not punishing past behavior, how can they deny Clemens, Bonds, Sosa, etc. entry into the Hall of Fame?
  19. Some of it is nothing...but having someone testify that he himself injected roger clemens is something It's certainly not a surprise that Clemens took steroids and whether he injected himself or someone else did doesn't really interest me. As some sportscasters pointed out, basically they named the Balco group (West Coast) and the NY group (East Coast), which means there are a lot of players that weren't named from Chicago, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Kansas City, etc.
  20. Personally, I think the whole Mitchell report is a lot of talk about nothing. Are there any names (having serious evidence) on the list a surprise? NO! Everyone will kick this around for a few days, but to most fans, the result will be the same as expressed here on NSBB.......basically, I hope it drives the price down on Roberts and I loved watching Glenallen Hill hit long home runs. Let's get on with the Hot Stove League, spring training, and the march to the World Series.
  21. I know that the Hendry is not done filling out the roster for 2008, but early returns seem to show that the Cubs might need a right-handed power bat (Blanco, Ward, Cedeno(?), Fuld/Pagan, ????) unless Derosa is on the bench. I would imagine some team would give Mench a shot at starting, but if he's still available, would he be worth a shot?
  22. I wonder about all of the Bonds' criticism if somewhere down the road we find out ARod has used steroids or HGH. As you said, there's no way of knowing who is clean and who isn't.
  23. I reach out to my enemy (Kenny Williams) and offer some advice on trades to keep the White Sox out of last place: Proposal 1: Sox trade Crede to the Dodgers for Juan Pierre (Dodgers pay $3 million, $4 million, $4 million, $3 million for 2008-2011). AND Sox trade Cabrera to the Cubs for Murton, Cedeno/Theriot, and Marshall/Pignatello/Petrick. Dodgers view: Get out from under some of Pierre's bad contract, clear up some of OF glut, and take a chance on Crede's return. Sox view: Reunite Guillen and Pierre, add speed, add CF, get younger and save money at SS, LF, and pitcher. Cubs view: Cabrera solves SS problem and allows DeRosa to start at 2B. SS obtained for "spare parts". Proposal 2: Sox trade Konerko and Crede to the Angels for Kotchman, Mathews Jr., Wood, Willits/Rivera. Sox view: Get younger, solve CF problem, add possible star (Wood). Angels view: Get slugging 1B, solve OF glut, chance of slugging 3B.
  24. Murton really has value. I wish he would play here, but I get why they are dealing him. He'll likely be part of the package that lands Hendry Brian Roberts. This seems less likely with the Orioles' acquisition of Luke Scott. The Orioles might use the Murton/Scott platoon that some of us hinted at (for the Cubs). If they do it will probably end up .290, 30 hrs, 100 rbi, .375 obp, .650 slg and cost them $1 million per year.
