  1. I'm betting DeRo gives a bigger advantage over Fontenot than Peavy does over Marquis, in terms of wins generated. There's been no less than 10 different names associated with this deal in the last week, plus about 4 different third teams sending 1-2 players the Pads way. Just how many people are you willing to give up to get Peavy. Keep in mind, since this sounds important to you, Peavy has averaged .6 more wins per season than Marquis over the last 5 years. And he's not exactly coming off his best season. Plus the rumors of arm problems. Would I like to have the guy? Absolutely. Would I be willing to give up 5 useful pieces, plus 2 of some other teams useful pieces to get him? Not really. If it were just DeRo and Marquis(or Vitters), then yes, it's a done deal. However, that's not even close to what was involved here.
  2. Without, knowing all of the details, I'm not sure you can completely blame Hendry. What did all of the other possible third teams want in their share of the deal? What did the Pads want of the Cubs? Maybe there wasn't a match between any of the third teams and the Pads. Who knows. And, as far as I remember, Hendry had nothing to do with Roberts not being a Cub last year. That was all Angelos. Hell, Roberts own agent(IIRC) told him he was a Cub. Hendry and MacPhail had the deal done until Angelos killed it. If it's really over, move on to getting a RF and maybe Furcal and RP.
  3. What is their purpose of trading him? Maybe I'm wrong, but it appears he's available with the intent of getting added pieces to send to the Pads. My biggest problem with DeRo/Hermida would be who to put at second w/Fontenot. You'd get improvement at RF, but how far would Font, by himself, dropoff from DeRo. If you could platoon at second( having already identified the who), and equal or exceed DeRo's production, than it would be a pretty good deal. If Fontenot is running out there 150 games a year, it wouldn't look as good.
  4. The only thing I can think of is that they can get Abreu for less money, and something of value from the Reds. If he costs the same as Dye, and they get crap from the Reds, it makes no sense.
  5. Any play him where? Rover? I think the point is, when compared to those three, there's not much drop off defensively to Dunn. He's definitely no Fukudome, defensively, but Ibanez, Abreu and Bradley wouldn't be confused with Fuku either. On their best days, all three are most likely slightly below average, on their worst days, they're Dunn. Regardless of who the Cubs get, there will be a big dropoff on defense. That said, Dunn will cost $4-5 mil per more than any of the others, and will probably demand a longer contract. The others could probably be gotten for 1 or 2 year deals, Dunn will probably require 3-4 years. And given the current situation with the payroll, Dunn, unfortunately, isn't an option. It would be sweet to have him though. Of the actual options, I'd prefer Bradley. Even with the injury concerns.
  6. While he might be a slight upgrade defensively, Hoff can't come close to Dunn offensively. His is way cheaper. If the Cubs got Dunn(I realize they won't), there's no way he's a PH and backup.
  7. guys...go look at peavy's postseason stats...they are not good...neither are harden's how many of you are really that ok with derosa being our everyday right fielder? i think it is much wiser to try and get someone to bat leadoff and fill the RF spot Why would we want to look at hundreds of regular season innings to determine pitcher quality when we can look at 9.2 innings(Peavy) and 11.1 innings( Harden) of post season pitching and tell they both suck?
  8. This quote in the article scares the Howry out of me. If Dempster somehow signs elsewhere the "contingency plan" had better be Derek Lowe, AJ Burnett, or get a deal done for Peavy at all costs. Signing Randy Johnson to a one year deal is not a contingency plan. No way we are going to outbid NY for Lowe or Burnett. I agree. But, assuming they get CC, they aren't going to be able to get every decent starter on the market. If they don't get CC, then yes, that makes Hendry's job a whole lot harder.
  9. It's just a gut feeling, but I truly think Hendry is looking at getting 2 #1-#3 type starters. It could be Peavy/Dempster, Peavy/RJ, Dempster/RJ, or throw a Lowe/Burnett type in there as well. The story mentioning still being able to afford Dempster even if they get Peavy is why I truly believe that. I also think you'll see Marquis moved, and that's why they want 2 guys. Even with RJ, that's still an upgrade, albeit, a short term one. With the combined dollars for Peavy and Demp, on an annual basis, any 2 of those guys I mentioned could be had for that cost.
  10. It's things like this, and the Trib report, that make me think they'll have a rotation of Harden, Z, Lilly, Marquis and Marshall once the season starts. It's not like that rotation is horrible, but w/ Peavy and Dempster it could be as dominant as we've seen in a long time.
  11. 2 good games and he can pass Banks for #1 all-time. I think he's just over 300 behind. If he plays long enough next week, he should get within striking distance.
  12. Best sporting event I have ever attended. GO HAWKS!!! i was at the Cap One bowl so nothing will ever top that but this is near 2nd along with the Wisconsin game in 04. I got a ticket to a game in 85 the morning of the game. Saw Houghtlin hit a 29 yarder to win it. Nothing will top that.
  13. Surely we can pull this trade off, and then see if some team will take on Marquis for this year without us picking anything up. I don't care if we get a player in return who will never go above AA in his career. Just get his salary off the books. If we give up Shark and Marshall, I'm not too crazy about dumping Marquis for nothing. If Harden and Z or some other combination of two pitchers spend any time on the DL, we'll lose Gaudin from the pen, and be forced to dig for a Glendon Rusch type of pickup to plug the hole. Either that, or throw in Gooz and hope his arm stays attached, or pray for 2007 Hill to emerge from the depths of Lake Michigan. I'm all for going for Peavy, but it'll probably cost us depth. As much as I don't like Marquis, I wouldn't give away the insurance policy he serves as for nothing more than saving some money. It's not like that $7 mil we'll save by dumping him is going to help add depth if we really are also bucking to bring back Demp. That money could be used to partially pay for Wood, or a bat like Bradley or Ibanez. I could be wrong, but isn't Marquis due to get $10-10 1/2 mil this year? /puke Found it. $9.875 mil in 2009.

  15. Haha. The Mets giving Dempster a big contract sounds like an absolute disaster. let's hope that happens. What's more likely to happen? The Mets... A) Give Ryan Dempster a ridiculous 5 year contract B) Give Francisco Rodriguez a ridiculous 5 year contract C) Give both players ridiculous 5 year contracts I choose C. Anything over what Hendry has already proposed to Demp is overpaying since Dempster can't hack it in pressure situations. I can't imagine him faring any better in NY with the way things have gone over there the last few seasons. He'd have to be nuts to sign with the Mets. I was with you right up until there. Last I recall he couldn't handle 9th inning closer pressure in 2007, You mean when he saved 28 of 31 opps? Yeah yeah...that's the year. The one in which he also lost 7 games and had an ERA of 4.73(and a whip of 1.33). So 6 bad innings of work outweigh 60 innings with a WHIP of .965 and 1.65 ERA? Cause that's what he did in the games he didn't lose.
  16. Sounds good to me! I'd take that in a second...And heck it leaves us a small possibility to still get Roberts Oh no you didn't. [-X
  17. I don't see why it would. From where I'm sitting, this is moving much faster than anyone would have anticipated. There are really only 3 serious players for Peavy, and Towers probably needs this to be done sooner rather than later, because he has other players he's looking to move and will need to know what spots need to be filled. I'm just glad I have a busy slate this weekend so that I'm not spending 24 hours a day waiting to see this deal happen. I had way too much time to kill during the Roberts fiasco. In the event this deal goes down sometime this weekend and I'm not here and Peavy goes to the Cubs, let me officially say that I will have been very excited about the trade (assuming that Marmol and Soto were not part of the package). I'd hate Hendry and the Cubs with every ounce of my being if they included Soto.
  18. I can't even imagine doing this. Assuming you'd get a livable salary, what a great job. Whole lot better than getting shot at.
  19. Over his career he's about 1 ER better at home, 2.77 ERA/3.8 ERA, I couldn't find his home/away ERA+. He had horrible splits this past year, but 2 or the last 3 his home/away number were almost identical. In 05 and 07 the difference was less than .2. While his numbers will be a little worse at Wrigley than Petco, it shouldn't be to extreme of an increase once he's used to pitching there, if he's acquired. Edit: His HR numbers are obviously skewed, but his WHIP hasn't shown a big difference, over his career. This year, his WHIP was vastly better at home, and he did have a big HR difference, 4 in 98IP at home, 13 in 75IP on the road. This year was his biggest home/road splits of his career.
  20. Im curious abou the Cubs young pitching. Mashall? Ceda? Atkins? Papelbon? Would it cause a massive NSBB uproar if Jay Jackson was involved? No, not even close. It can involve any pitcher not named Marmol and there will be no uproar. Jackson can't be traded til June. If I'm not mistaken, he could be a PTBNL if the Padres are willing to accept that, and if the Cubs are willing to include him. PTBNL have to be settled within 6 months. Meaning the trade would have to wait until 6 months before Jackson's sign date.(which I'm sure is closer to early July than late June. Ahh, I didn't realize there was only a 6 month window.

  22. They should have announced it last night and stole all of Obama's thunder. Better yet, Obama should have announced it BHO: I'm honored that all you wonderful people of this great land have deemed me worthy of holding this revered position... and... I'd just like to announce that David Wright screwed my boy, Troy Glaus, over on the NL GG balloting.
  23. I'd much rather send Olsen on to SD in a deal for Peavy. I'm not completely sold on Olsen, as far as the Cubs. He seems to pitch well at home, which is a fairly pitcher friendly park, not so much on the road. I don't know how he'd do pitching 15-20 times a year in Wrigley. Marshall has been nearly as good, as a starter, as Olsen, while pitching in a more hitter fiendly park, and is only a year older than Olsen. I wouldn't say no to the deal cause we'd get Hermida, even if we kept Olsen. But between the two I'd rather have Marshall.
  24. You called? Cubs sign Furcal and then trade Marshall, Veal/Hart, and Ceda to Marlins for Hermida and Olsen. Cubs trade Olsen, Pie, Theriot, and Hill to SD for Peavy. Furcal @ SS, Hermida in RF, and Peavy in the rotation. Knew I could count on ya. Can someone explain why Hill would have any value at all? Because if someone can fix whatever is going on with him, they'd have a really nice #2-3 starter. Has anyone thought of getting him those Rick Vaughn glasses? Maybe that would help.
