  1. I'm not sure the competition really matters all that much in the spring. The Cubs sell-out in Arizona already. People go to games to see a spring training game, they don't care who the other team is. The people that should be worried are the other teams/towns in Arizona that lose a huge road draw when Cbus fans who can't get into Hohokam go to the other parks. I am aware of the Cubs' gate performance in Arizona. I believe it has the potential to be even better. They could probably sell out a 25,000 seat stadium in AZ pretty much every ST game, if they had one there. As was said, I don't think gate receipts are the major deciding factor.
  2. Thank God. Are they actually having talks about anything(other than Well for Bradley), or is this just pure speculation?
  3. How was that game? Now, Come on, there is no way Fred could have been at that game. He was in Mexico, helping Pershing track down Pancho Villa.
  4. So instead of Bradley for 2 years at approx $10.5MM per year, they would be willing to take Wells for 6 years at about $10MM per year? There better be something else going on in the deal for the Cubs to take it serious. Why would the Cubs want to get rid of Bradley for worse player and a longer contract at the same money per year? They would have to be getting something good thrown in. This makes no sense, I'd rather release Bradley than get Wells back.
  5. I'd definitely call that putting a guy on notice. I realize this is WAY early, but I'm liking this guy way better than I thought I would. Hopefully he acts on this stuff, really means it, and doesn't let everyone down by letting things continue as they have been. I would be very happy.
  6. If you don't have to pickup any of the contract, it would be almost difficult for a deal not to be worth it. I would think strongly about it if someone offered to take him and his contract for nothing in return. You'd normally like to get some value for players in trades, but being rid of that contract would be VERY tempting. If Hendry is really shopping him, I wonder what any offers have looked like.
  7. Not that I disagree, but Burrell EASILY has the best contract of any of those choices, if they are actual choices. He has 1/$9 mil left on his deal. The rest have multiple years and way more money left. I understand that money would most likely have to be going to the Rays, but if it wasn't a lot, at least Burrell would be a one year rental, instead of 2,3 or 5 like the rest of those names. And it's not like any of those guys are great defenders. We're not comparing Burrell to Clemente here. I'd like to think Hendry could get something decent in a deal for Bradley, but all of those guys have something bad about them... bad defense, bad contract or bad offense. Some have more than one of those.
  8. http://espn.go.com/chicago/columns/blog/_/post/4602900/name/levine If those are both actual possiblities, and truly the only realistic choices, Burrell would make me smile for no other reason than avoiding having Wells and Sorianos contracts both on the Cubs. I'm still thinking I'd be happier with Bradley, but Burrell>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Wells.
  9. Out of everything he said about the Cubs, which took around 1 minute, that was the only thing that truly interested me. He was actually on to talk about the Bears in his regular call in slot, but because of the Cubs sale, the hosts asked a few Cub questions. He didn't use too many more words to answer the questions than I did typing his comments. I wish the hosts had asked follow up questions to a couple of those, to try to get something new out, but they wanted to move on to football.
  10. Consider the source, but, Kaplan was on KXNO in Des Moines yesterday afternoon and said there was no chance the Cubs move to Florida. He said Florida was just to get Mesa to give them a better deal. He also said 0% chance Bradley is back, that Ricketts had already approved a "huge" (his word) increase in money to sign Latin and Asian FA, and that Hendry and Kenney would both be back next year. Then they moved on to Bears talk. Edit: He also said the would have a budget of around $145 mil. The FLA/AZ thing and foreign FA money were both new to me, the rest... meh.
  11. No. I was thinking he was around 30-31 until I read that. I can't believe he's that old. That would have made him 10 when his dad played LF for the Cubs 84 team. That's just not right.
  12. While I fully understand the business side, and want the Cubs to do what is best for their business... I really hate Florida, and would much rather that they work out a good deal to stay in AZ. It must be all those years at Ft Irwin, the tours in Iraq, Israel and Sinai that made really like heat and no humidity much more than heat and humidity.
  13. Pat Burrell is neither left handed nor at all similar to Micah Hoffpauir. Burrell has shown he can hit ML pitching very well, Hoffpauir hasn't.
  14. Minor nitpick, but the Red Sox actually have two WS wins during that time (2004, 2007). I knew that, my bad. Don't know why I put 1 instead of 2.
  15. Evidently, it's throwing marbles, banana peels, oil or whatever else they can to try to get their entire 40 man roster on the DL at the same time. It worked this year.
  16. How many years of postseason failure proves a team can't go far in the playoffs? Should the Angels start selling off pieces? How about the Yankees? Hmmm, Twins model- 5 postseasons in 10 years, 0 WS appearances Yankees model- 9 postseasons in 10 years- 3 WS appearances- 1 win Red Sox model- 6 postseasons in 10 years- 2 WS appearances- 1 win Cardinal model- 7 postseasons in 10 years- 2 WS appearances- 1 win My point? You make it to the postseason enough, you're bound to make a WS once in a while. I'd much rather go with Hendry copying NYY, Bosox or Cards ( or even the Braves during their 15 year run) methods than the Twins. At least those teams have been to and won a WS recently. The Twins method works for them because they don't have the money to spend, the Cubs do. The problem is that Hendry doesn't know how to spend that money. I will agree, they don't need to compare to the Mets, but becoming Twins-like isn't needed. What is needed is to spend the money they have rationally.
  17. Miles is not cheap. You'd get what, 3 years of Fontenot and Theriot for 1 year of Miles. Besides the fact that he's really, really bad at baseball.
  18. Without even looking, you're talking about Glenallen Hill's rooftop shot. Aren't they talking about his blue shoes or something. Ball lands on the rooftop and Chip doesn't even realized it until moments later. Then he throws in another mention of the shoes, something like " he keeps hitting the ball there, he can where whatever shoes he wants". Too bad he couldn't keep hitting the ball there.
  19. I love the guy, but does anyone else find it funny that Maddux allowed more SB in 2 1/2 seasons than Zambrano has in 8 seasons? I realized he basically ignored base runners, but not to that degree.
  20. Don't you remember? He saved us. He really did, in 1998. :-))
  21. I got a 135. Got most of the players from 90-96, and from 2004 on. 97-2002 was a nightmare. Both in my memory of the players, and the actual guys the Cubs suited up in that timeframe. How in the hell did the Cubs make the playoffs in 1998? Even with Sosa and Grace, that lineup was fill with crap. I'm shocked the Cubs actually had a couple of decent teams in that era with horrendous players on the team.
  22. Don't you remember? He saved us.
  23. Well, I mean, the second part of that last sentence isn't all that unreasonable. The point is, the complaint seems to be that people complained about firing 2 good hitting coaches. No matter what you want to project on to Hendry, I think most can agree he didn't fire Gerald Perry with the idea of hiring Jaramillo in his head. When a move i stupid on the surface, I'm going to call it stupid rather than trust a blind faith in a GM who hasn't proven he deserves the benefit of the doubt. Hopefully he can help Fox to hit sliders Hopefully after working with Jaramillo, Fox won't have to sacrifice a live chicken.
  24. That's awesome if true. Yes, if this is true, you have to love Hendry's aggressiveness. AM I the only one who will find it amusing if after millions and millions of dollars worth of overpaid outfielders, 3 million or so for a hiting coach is the final piece of the puzzle? Jaramillo is by no means the final piece of the puzzle. If this is the only move that Hendry makes in the offseason, I don't see it as a productive offseason. I will, because that will mean that Hendry: didn't give Bradley+10 mil for Rowand didn't give a crappy middle reliever a 3/15 contract didn't trade three useful(notice I didn't say good, just useful) minor leaguers for another crappy veteran for the bench didn't sign Grabow to a ridiculous contract Of course it will probably also mean that he didn't offer Harden arb and still has a job with the Cubs, but there has to some bad with the good.
