Guzman's first start will be Friday against the White Sox. Lou has already admitted that he isn't considering Guzman for the bullpen so you can read into that what you wish... I like the way he thinks.

I'm fairly certain the Cubs don't actually have to pay if he files for free agency. They may know what they're talking about but, the people at Rotoworld give the impression that the Cubs could have lost their money if Holdzkom decided to become a FA.

If it's not Guzman's job, right now, we have more questions than answers. Miller, Cotts, and Prior are not cutting the mustard. Prior needs to be solely focused on reestablishing his game. At this point, Miller is headed for the trading block and Cotts to the bullpen. Opening Day is a mere 22 days away. Lou has already said he won't be skipping the fifth starter, so April 7th is looking very much like Angel Guzman's day to pitch. -
Marquis seems to have rediscovered his sinker. He's looking very good. I'd caution against saying he has looked "very good". Maybe very good for Marquis but not in general. I agree that the sinker appears to be working, but he just gave up 6 hits to a spring line-up about half filled with minor leaguers. Now the type of pitcher he is, he's going to give up hits. Hitters are going to make contact off of him, but Marquis can influence what type of contact that will be. He's been effective. He's getting the job done. The defense is going to have to be on their toes when he is pitching because balls will be hit. The hits don't bother me because his game is pitching to contact. As you said, if he is right, he will depend heavily on the INF defense. The ground balls will be the key to his success.

Gallagher was mentioned as a long shot just like last season Sean Marshall was. He is a long shot. He's been bad in the big league games but he's impressed in camp itself. I meant, today is the first time I've seen Gallagher's name in print-in relation to the 5th starter job... It's in the Prior article...

Cherry has been the most impressive relief pitcher of the Spring-bar none. He strikes out the side with a walk and stolen base sprinkled in. Marquis gets the win

Ron just said Cherry has a good chance to make the team. He and Lou had this discussion last week. I think he's going to make the team. If he closes this out, it will be his 4th (?) save of the Spring.

Sean Gallagher's name has been thrown into the 5th starter mix. I don't see that happening at all! I do know Lou likes him. At this point it's going to be Angel Guzman.

Link? I don't think an unbiased interpretation of Lou's quotes shows anything except the obvious fact that Prior can't pitch in the regular season the way he has pitched in ST. He just said it on WGN radio's pregame show. If you have Gameday Audio you can hear the rebroadcast... Unfortunately I don't have it. I'll wait to see it in the paper. Here ya go: Link -
Sometimes he doesn't sound like he's prepared? The point of listening to Ron Santo is to hear someone so passionate, someone who lives and dies with every pitch. I don't listen for a cross between Steve Stone and Baseball Prospectus. Yes but is that what he's there for? He's like a fan... Sometimes all you get are grunts and if Pat asks him a question sometimes he doesn't know of is ill-informed. I listen to a lot of different calls and there's no doubt he is an acquired taste. On the other hand, Pat is a great broadcaster. I think the point of Ron Santo the broadcaster is to keep him in baseball and in people's minds to keep his HOF campaign going. The reason it works is because: 1, Pat gets along with him and can cover his faults; 2, the majority of fans (opinion) revere Santo as the voice of the fan. I agree to a point. Gallagher is going to get lit up, I hope someone is getting ready...
