This Jeremy Fowler stuff seems pretty overblown to me.
As an aside to start off, I've never thought for a minute Poles wouldn't at least get his 3rd year to fulfill his vision for a rebuild. That plan has been sold and stamped. So I've never put any stock into Warren actually blowing up everything below him and finally aligning GM-HC-QB. It's just not the Bears way. Or Poles being handcuffed and not able to make deals moving future capital while his job hangs in jeopardy. This trade didn't move the needle for me in any way regarding Poles' future here (for now). This is just my take and how it pertains to how I perceive this move.
Regarding this move being a rental, it's incredibly hard for me to believe they're not aggressively negotiating an in-season extension for Sweat now (and have been), 'the groundwork' has just been laid out with the Rashan Gary deal. Brad Biggs has shared this same sentiment and he's actually connected. Poles has the leverage with 2 years of franchise tags, it makes sense for everyone to get a big deal done now. Seems like a much better idea to wait and see what it looks like then to assume its not there.
I would hope the extension timeline would follow the Bradley Chubb one pretty closely to help wrap this up while acknowledging the Roquan extension not being finalized until January. There's a large window here potentially and the longer it lingers, with Poles having earned zero benefit of the doubt so far, anxiety will understandably increase, especially with the Jaylon debacle orbiting. However, this time feels appropriate to pop a Bears Xanax instead of ruminating about ESPN hot takes and Falcon's beat writers declaring Sweat's disappointment for him.
Fowler and Dan Graziano muddying up this deal with clickbait speculation: Contract numbers for Jaylon "was considered pretty low" - oh yeah by whom and what were the terms? Extension plans for Sweat: "will at least make an effort to re-sign" - wtf is that and what does Graziano know?
In my estimation, there are multiple factors overshadowing what I believe to be a good value move that significantly helps this team now and in the future. It's really just a blend containing a lack of organizational confidence. Completely fair questions for how it fits the rebuild. A multitude of question marks lingering for how this all fits together and in what timeline. Jaylon aggressively pursuing an over-market deal, which wasn't capitulated by a trade partner that we know of either. His feelings are hurt and he's shut down negotiations. The stench of Chase Claypool - the acceptance of the sunk cost but the feeling you can't completely shake for how bad it turned out. And finally, the horsefeathers being stirred up by these media horsefeathers birds. The latter being the most annoying offender. It hasn't even been 24 hours since the trade has been finalized, a modicum of patience would do wonders. But through it all, I'm a big fan of Montez Sweat being a Bear. I'm a simple man who wants the Bears to have a cromulent d-line.
