  1. He will be. Theriot is made of elf magic. Keebler elf magic?
  2. Wow. I was all for moving Gooz to the pen if we got a good 5th starter, but Dempster to the rotation is just plain stupid.
  3. I really dont disagree with anything you are saying here. I just would like to know what are the better options though. If we had even some semi option this would make sense. I dont think the Cubs really have another option at starter. Yup, we're in a bit of a bind. Marshall had a couple decent starts in AAA, but he's pretty similar stuff-wise to Lilly and Hill. Having 3 similar pitchers go every 5 days is not a good idea. I'm really hoping for a trade. Hopefully we get rid of either Murton or Jones and nab a serviceable 5th starter who can keep you in the game for 6-7 innings. I like Gooz. He's a lot better than his limited numbers in Chicago indicate, but he's got a lot to prove IMO. I'd be fine keeping him in the rotation if we had a steady pen. We don't. He usually only goes 5 innings when he starts. Not good. It just puts that much more pressure on the pen. With the crap that's been going on lately, you can almost guarantee the Cubs lose that game. Wuertz/Dempster can't pitch 4 innings every time Gooz starts.
  4. Angel Guzman's career ML stats: 6.18 ERA, 1.73 WHIP, 0.98 GO/AO, 1.88 K/BB, 4.92 BB/9, 9.27 K/9, 10.64 H/9 It's not like Guzman has the minor league track record of success to warrant this "effective ML starter" label some people are intent on giving him. A handful of good innings in 2007 is a great start, but it doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things. Guzman's curve is worlds better than last season. I'm glad to see it come back. But I think we can kiss the dream of 3 plus pitches goodbye. His changeup is junk the few times I've seen him throw it. Guzman hasn't earned anything at the ML level. Acting like he's entitled to a rotation spot b/c of 20 innings in 2007 is silly. Guzman is more effective earlier in games anyway, which suggests he should be in the pen for now.
  5. It's not a poor argument at all. Our pen is a joke. Guz isn't a dominant SP. The argument that he's worth more as a starting pitcher b/c he'd throw more innings is ridiculous. You have to actually pitch well in those starts for that argument to be even remotely valid. Gooz has the stuff to be lights out in the pen. He doesn't have the stuff to consistently dominate as a ML starter. If that changeup ever comes back, then fine. Cramps schmamps. Gooz has a very significant injury history. Limiting the number of innings he pitches is a smart thing.
  6. Putting 3 lefties in the rotation (with similar stuff) is a bad, bad idea. I'm all for moving Gooz to the pen as we're desperate for a quality power arm or two in there. Usually a pitcher is more valuable if he can start, but when your pen is blowing game after game, it's time to make an exception to the rule. edit: me no spell good
  7. I peed pooped and belched. All at the same time? Now that would be impressive.
  8. Why would he be hurt? He just hit a GS in his first AB in a week.
  9. Yup, especially if Ozzie brings in the lefty, which he is...
  10. This all just goes to show how shifty and unpredictable relievers are. You could have made a very good case the Cubs had the best bullpen in the league prior to the start of the season. Relievers should not be signed to multi-year contracts. Other than closers, here are all the consistently good relievers I can think of off the top of my head: Scot Shields And Scott Linebrink. That's about it. Howry was close to that level, but Dusty may have damaged him. Cla Meredith. Justin Duchescher. Dan Wheeler. And that's just non-closers. That's the point. There's like 5 decent RHP setup guys in baseball. It's not like you just pick one off the street. The really good relievers are closers and there's not many good closers either.
