  1. Lilly, but it's unacceptable to just add one of them. We need two starters. If it's not either of these two, I doubt we can acquire two other competent starters by means of trade.
  2. i've read that lilly has told friends he wanted to go back to the yankees so who knows if the cubs can do much besides drive up the price. The Yankees worry me tremendously. If they put an offer close to ours, I'd think he'll take it. I'm not nearly as optimistic about our chances of snagging Lilly as I was before I knew the Yankees were involved. My gut tells me he's a Yankee by tomorrow morning. His agent says he meeting with the Yanks today, which tells me Lilly is saying you have one more shot to sign me or else I'm a Cub. To me, it would be no great loss. Guzman is likely to put up similar numbers to what Lilly would anyway. Lilly is about to get #2 money to post #4 or #5 numbers. Id rather we didnt waste the money. I can't speak for Hendry, but I'm absolutely not comfortable making that assumption. We don't know if Guzman can stay healthy, and we don't know if he can produce like Lilly has.

  4. As much as many of you dislike Lilly, I'll be incredibly disappointed (especially considering Schmidt's off the market) if we don't get him. We can't afford to have a rotation filled with rookies like last year.
  5. I'm guessing we'll have both Meche and Lilly in the fold by day's end.
  6. Interesting note in there: The addition of Schmidt likely will increase the chances of the Dodgers trading right-hander Brad Penny for a hitter, even though the Dodgers lost free-agent right-hander Greg Maddux to the Padres on Tuesday. Jones for Penny?
  7. Listen, I'm not saying I'd take that over Schmidt. But if Hendry determines he's unable to get Schmidt, I'd rather have Meche in the rotation than someone like Marquis or an in house option like Marmol.
  8. From rotoworld: Free agent Gil Meche has reportedly narrowed his choices to the Blue Jays, Cubs and Royals. It's unclear whether all three teams are offering four years, though it'd come as no surprise if that's the case. We're guessing Toronto for Meche, with Ted Lilly picking the Cubs. Meche is expected to make his decision on Wednesday. Dec. 5 - 11:42 pm et Source: Yahoo! Sports If we can't get Schmidt, I'd be content with Lilly and Meche.
  9. It's a lot of money, but they're the Yankees. It's only one year.
  10. As reported by SI Sounds like a decent move to me.
  11. I don't really see that as the case. If he thought he needed that money for Z, he wouldn't spend it on Schmidt and Lilly.
  12. I don't think this has been posted yet... The Cubs have reportedly tweaked their previous offer to Ted Lilly, who could settle on a new team before the close of the winter meetings. Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown said this afternoon that a deal between the Cubs and Lilly remains likely. The Jays have joined the Cubs in offering Lilly a four-year deal, and the Mariners, Giants and Yankees are also supposed to be in the mix. Still, it's looked like Lilly to the Cubs for about two days now. I know many of you are against Lilly, but I really want him. That said, I want him provided it would not interfere with signing Schmidt.
  13. So we're going for Schmidt, Lilly, and Meche. One of them is not happening, hopefully it's one of latter two.
  14. Despite the fact everyone seems to think Whitlock's incredibly unreliable, I'm going to take this rumor to the bank and get excited.
  15. I don't know who Whitlock is, but I take it he's not very reliable.
  16. Sorry if it was already posted but I thought it was interesting. In other words: I painted myself into a corner and now I'm screwed. For what it's worth, I don't think Hendry really mismanaged the rotation. He couldn't have anticipated Prior breaking down like this. Wood, maybe, but not Prior.
  17. So to clarify, there's definitely no word on rather Lilly (or Schmidt for that matter) has actually been signed or agreed to anything?
  18. I know everyone's eager about Schmidt, but I figure he's not going to be signed for a few days at least. I really want this Lilly situation to reach it's conclusion today.
  19. I'll believe both when I see them. I think there's a decent chance we don't end up with either of them.
  20. ESPN1000 reported the Cubs made a 4/40 offer to Lilly. I don't see how Lilly would turn that offer down. Though, Toronto really wants Lilly back in their rotation. Toronto has apparently made the same offer.
