  1. anyone else notice he was leading the AL in PAP this year?
  2. please help him figure things out. I already told him not to trade with Tim! :)
  3. I'm starting to think he can hit more homeruns by not swinging hard.
  4. I have to say Kent is the big winner here in a money independent evaluation. Even if his power continues to decline, he remains a stronger hitter than the other three. My guess is that he will maintain his homerun rate at worst moving to Wrigley and likely lose a few doubles (that become homeruns). Not sure about his defense or cost. Durham and Giles are pretty close with Giles having an age advantage that might indicate a career year is forthcoming. I wonder what happened to his homerun power though - it really has vanished the last three years. I don't think Durham comes close to his 2006 homerun rate again but that puts him in the same power catergory as Giles. Loretta just doesn't make the grade. How about Soriano CF Murton LF Lee 1b Kent 2b Ramirez 3b Jones RF Barrett C Izturis/Cedeno SS
  5. why is anyone pitching to this guy right now? I have to think the A's and particularly Nick Swisher have completely revitalized the Big Hurt.
  6. Baseball Prospectus Internships It's that time of year again: Baseball Prospectus is looking for interns for the 2006-07 school year. Interns should be self-motivated, efficient, and currently enrolled in a university or advanced degree program. Priority is given to intern candidates who would receive course credit for their participation with BP, but this is not required. BP internships are unpaid, but many former BP interns have gone on to work in the baseball industry, or to join the Baseball Prospectus staff. We are looking for interns in the following categories: Marketing (MBA candidate preferred) Public Relations (MBA or advanced degree candidate preferred) Editorial Assistant Database Infrastructure (knowledge of Oracle recommended) Web Elements and Design If you are interested in an internship, please submit the following materials to Nate Silver [nsilver@baseballprospectus.com] by Monday, September 18th: A resume; A personal statement of approximately 500 words, OR an original piece of baseball research of not shorter than 800 words; Candidates for the Web Elements and Design internship are encouraged to submit a portfolio; All applicants MUST include the phrase "INTERNSHIP APPLICATION" in the subject header of their e-mail; All applicants MUST indicate the position or positions that they are applying for. Generally, Baseball Prospectus receives fewer applications in the technical categories (Database Infrastructure, Web Elements), so qualified applicants in these areas are especially encouraged. Due to the anticipated high volume of applications, we regret that we will not be able to respond to all applicants individually.
  7. is now working. Based on simple probabilities, the simulator runs through games (all nine innings) and produces a run total for each game. Baserunning is pretty tough to model so it is largely ignored - therefore, the simulator does not predict season run totals. It can be used to model different lineups and compare the likely results, however. for instance, the trial runs were a lineup of: Pierre Izturis Lee Ramirez Jones Barrett Murton Cedeno Pitcher based on three year averages. This lineup averaged 622 runs per season (100 seasons were run). By switching Murton and Izturis, the lineup averaged 631 runs per season. 50 seasons seems sufficient to get to an average. standard deviation is 35. The next plan is to start replacing players with potential acquisitions to measure the impact of each. I also may run 96 game seasons with and without Lee to see how that turns out.
  8. beat the twins and the sox lose.
  9. I was under the impression september callups did not start the arbitration clock . . . is that incorrect?
  10. actually, the play by play clearly shows he swung at the first pitch. you should read it.
  11. Without having watched the game, it's once again all situational. Did Mark Ellis get to 2B, b/c he was robbed of a hit and the IF'er in a rush to get the close threw the ball into the dugout? Did Johnson fall behind in the count 0-2 and did the best he could with a tough pitch? How well did the pitchers throw against them? It's incomplete to me. It wasn't productive based on the game situation rather than non-situational outcome. I think its safe to say the count wasn't 0-2 when he walked up to the plate. therefore, its safe to say he failed. how well did the pitchers throw against them? what is this kindergarten? now we are giving players credit for doing "the best they could" against tough pitches? That's ridiculous. he failed.
  12. the reason not is that there are six teams in the playoffs and they should not be adding random players during the playoffs. Accordingly, I've frozen rosters until the season end. if you are in the playoffs, you can request an add/drop of existing free agents - I will process the move retroactively to the time of the request.
  13. no, please don't.
  14. I'm pretty sure you're missing the point completely. No im not missing the point. He said he thought Kendall's Ab was the only good one in the inning. Which is completely false. Not everyting has to be about stats. Stats aren't useless, but stats are so subjective that one must really pay extreme attention to other details of the game that stats don't record. I stand corrected raisin. What is that supposed to mean? the shocked face means I can't believe you actually believe that. the comment to raisin is a comment to raisin that has nothing to do with you.xz

  16. we have a big matchup this year 'cuse! Toilet bowl!
  17. How can you not give credit to Dan Johnson for bringing that run home?? I dont understand why you dont give credit to a guy who did his job. :? you're not serious are you? the A's were down two in the bottom of the ninth . . . pretty self explanatory, isn't it?
  18. what's more disturbing is the lack of defense. your 2005 bruins notwithstanding, you don't win many games without defense.
  19. they are being dominated. tough to win in knoxville.
  20. Are your other questions not serious? Perhaps I exaggerated a little. 40 years of data is sufficient anyway. You might have also pointed out that the style of play in the 1910s makes that data sort of irrelevant anyway. 50 years worth is available here - http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CHC/ lots of fun on that site if you've never been there before. You'll especially enjoy this page: http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CLE/1948_sched.shtml more than this one: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/B10260FLO1997.htm How did I ever forget about that game? I always remember Cleveland losing to Atlanta . . .

  22. technically, that would be a perfect game or no-hitter then (unless Z pitched the whole thing - then it could be a no-hitter). Unless the Cubs offense managed to score a negative run.
  23. ok, so who had good at bats in this inning? Mark Ellis: Strike looking, Ball, Ellis safe at first on Unknown's fielding error, Ellis to second advancing on throw. Marco Scutaro: Ball, Foul, Foul, Scutaro grounded out to second, Ellis to third Dan Johnson hit for Antonio Perez. Dan Johnson: Johnson hit sacrifice fly to center, Ellis scored. Jason Kendall: Ball, Ball, Strike looking, Kendall singled to center. Nick Swisher: Strike looking, Strike swinging, Foul, Foul, Swisher struck out swinging. I count Kendall and no one else. of course, it was the ninth and the A's were down two - should that matter? Are Scutaro and Johnson's ABs good since they got high fives in the dugout? of course not. if the A's were down one would I think differently? Yes.
  24. the other option would be to have a right-handed platoon type guy as a backup - you could then platoon milton with jones against lefties.
