  1. I guess I disagree, but you are certainly entitled to your opinion. You said he sees managers as "fungible" twice in this thread, it looks like you agree with poudre. To clarify: I disagree that Beane is "smarter" than Hendry. I haven't seen any evidence of that. That's just my opinion. to use your standard, check the A's payroll and record. I certainly think Beane has been much smarter in his managerial choice than hendry. think about it, the cubs are paying baker $4 million a year. at best, he is harmless so why spend that much money on him? to me that a good indication beane is smarter than hendry.
  2. I totally agree. I hate the Cards, but at least their fans show up at the ballpark every day (not just for the playoffs and the days Rocket pitches), and aren't fickle, fair weather chumps who make themselves scarce when their team isn't doing so well. Right or wrong, I guess much of my perception of other teams depends on their fans. And that being the case, I can at least respect most Cards fans. I can't say the same of most Astros fans. Agree 100% with both of you. Having lived in Houston for some time a couple years back, I was able to witness firsthand the Astros' fan base. It is generally a very laissez faire group that only shows up when it counts. I get the impression they are very similar to the Dodgers fans in L.A. That being said I'd like to see the Cards win the NL then be bounced by any team out of the AL not named the Yankees. Come on Angels!!! Haven't the dodgers led the NL in attendance for like 20 years in a row? Sure, they arrive late and leave early, but most of them are watching the game at least. But hey, Astros fans cheer when the scoreboard tells them to! I have to cheer against the Astros because no world series should ever be played in a little league park where you need a yellow line to decide a homerun and you can score five runs on 650 feet of home runs.
  3. Would you do anything with the Cubs OF or just leave it as is? No, since those are the only three possible options.
  4. I wouldn't be too excited about Kearns either though there is always the potential that he busts out. I would be more excited about Abreu if I thought this team could win next year. Right now, I don't see the Cubs being there. Wrong manager, too many bad players, too many injury risks. I think the price for Abreu is wrong and he is getting older. With the hype coming off last year, I see him as overpriced. There is a reason Philly wants to trade him. I wouldn't complain seeing him in the lineup but I think there would be a huge price to pay. Michaels sounds like the kind of player Dusty would hate.
  5. I wouldn't trade for Abreu. Giles will likely want too many years.
  6. Here's a good example: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2185132 Why not find some new candidates?
  7. I think the answer is that baseball people refuse to change the way they think. They just keep hiring retreads and ex-players.
  8. Spending less on a manager would be a good start. My point is that I don't see that us withdrawing our support would change anything. The majority of "fans" at Wrigley aren't really fans. They don't understand the game and they certainly don't spend time discussing the team on message boards. So, there is your conundrum. you can walk away, but it won't help the team win. Though, in theory, you would no longer care.
  9. He's just another manager that has to interfere with the game and thus makes dumb moves just to make a move. No thanks.
  10. So you think spending less money will help? I don't think so. The Cubs need a person at the top with an understanding and a plan. Otherwise, we will have to wait on luck.
  11. Yea, I guess it would have to be. So if he doesn't swing, is it automatically a ball? Otherwise that rule makes no sense.
  12. this is so silly. ken williams is not a great gm. he is an active gm but great is ridiculous. What great moves has he made? Podsednik for Lee may not be terrible but it certainly isn't great. When he wins 100 games three years in a row with a sub-$50 payroll maybe we can call him great. On the basis of one season? No chance. I would still cheer for the white sox against the cardinals though. and the yankees for that matter.
  13. I believe the ball is dead if he puts it in play.
  14. I think my frustration came to a head this year, not only did the team underachieve, but the manager managed to prevent the team from taking steps to improve for next year. This team was painful to watch. This team gave me little hope for the future. I think the Cubs have the worst collection of coaches around. Our players, young and veteran, seem to get worse instead of better. Fundamentals are awful and many of the players don't seem to have their heads in the game. Pitchers with poor mechanics never improve. There was some discussion of the cubs developing prior in another thread. It almost seems like the Cubs are ruining prior instead of developing him. This guy had 180:15 K:BB ratio at USC and now he struggles to throw strikes, has injury problems, and is nowhere near the pitcher he was when he arrived. Maybe that's coincidence but I would have liked to see at least one of the young pitchers improve over the last two or three years.
  15. Jenkins injuries worry me. We have enough of those risks around. Is he really worth giving up talent to obtain? I would rather pursue someone like Burrell - power hitters with plate discipline are likely to improve as they mature.
  16. I'm not saying he would be bad, just what makes you think he would be good? His first pitch swinging was abominable - you would think a hitter that understands the game would have been more patient.
  17. What makes you think Joe would be a good manager? He was a terrible, terrible hitter. Ned Yost is the worst in-game manager I have ever seen (save Brenly). I would almost rather keep Dusty than see Ned coaching the Cubs.
  18. I think its also dependent on dealing with Helton's contract. Lee is a far better value at this point. I think Giles is the obvious target there. I would also inquire about Burrell if the Phillies want too much for Abreu.
  19. for the record, the cubs were closer to winning the world series in 2003 than the sox are right now.
  20. heading west! Is there a more likeable coach in the NCAA than Glen Mason?

    Oswalt

I think Oswalt's last start against the Cubs illustrates why he will never be a dominant starter.
  22. Seriously, 70 percent of the people celebrating will be people who were cub fans in march.
  23. I think Beane simply realizes that very few managers do anything to make them worth millions of dollars - so why spend money on them? Was Macha worse than Baker? Doubtful but Beane is smarter than Hendry.
  24. Amazingly, no one has mentioned the cubs biggest flaw in developing players - they don't play them. No one wil become a major league player sitting on the bench. I have to agree that Francoeur is going to crash and burn if he doesn't learn some plate discipline.
  25. root for the white sox and its not close. how can you cheer for a team whose fans want curtain calls for first inning solo homers? Plus, logic would suggest if the team that had gone the 3rd longest without a world series win won, then the team that had gone the 2nd longest . . .
