    So before the FA period begun, the Cubs had about 40-45 million/per season to spend on FA's. around 25 million contracts off the books(Wood buyout, Maddux contract, Pierre contract) + 20 million in pledged extra $$$ from the Tribune. So we have added Soriono 17 M Derosa 4 M Lilly 10 M Marquis 7 M (going with this # for now) Wood, Miller, Ward, etc...3 Million(my best guess) Thats 41 million. Please someone correct me on these numbers if they are off, because right now (if the Tribune is enforcing a strict budget after this payroll increase authorization) a Zambrano contract does not appear promising.

    Sorry if this has been mentioned already. I'm just back from an X-mas party. How old is Marquis now? He's not been outstanding for at least 5 years. Give me a freaking break. I guess it's fine to be a contrian but at some point it becomes absurd. I think that post of his was sarcasm.

    Glad to have you on board. Whether I agree or disagree with your argument you always have an encyclopedia of stats to back it. Now give me the juicy numbers on why Marquis sucks, so I can use that in addtition to my "melodramatic posts" 8-)

    Actually, most of it has been fans fed up with garbage baseball. Speaking of melodramatic posts. It is what is is. The past two seasons have been nothing but bad baseball on the northside. I try to be positive. I loved the Soriono signing. Didn't mind the Lily aquistion, then Hendry pulls this off. 7(maybe 9) million for Jason Marquis.

    even the site admin It may not be as bad as a #1 and 4 #5's but it is pretty close We have a: #1 - Z - Can we even re-sign him now? no #2 a # 3 Ted Lilly a #4 Rich Hill 2 ?'s - Miller and Prior and a guy pretty close to useless Marquis

    LOL. Are you taking a list of posters who don't like the Marquis signing, then(should Marquis actually pitch decent in 2007) call them out in every thread like this: "OMG Dude, you send Marquis would suck in Dec, but now he is good man! Dude you have to eat some major crow man! just eat the crow "

    More alarming than Marquis 6+ ERA was his BAA which was .280+ if I'm not mistaken. To me this is a sign that the guy is simply hittable. His fastball has lost life, or his breakin stuff insn't as sharp. Now take a guy like Marmol, who had a bad ERA, but better BAA. Marmol simply doesn't have the control right now, but that can be fixed(see Rich Hill)

    He just gave nearly 10 million to Jason Marquis. The fraternity of GM's at the winter meetings are probably sipping drinks at the hotel bar calling him the same thing.

    Unfortunately, something this place has had very little of this offseason! It's been hard at points to read this board when you have to wade through pages and pages of arguements that lack reason, an objective view, and have some really skewed logic. The negativity (and I can understand it a bit) on this board has been SO bad this offseason it's crazy! Despite that, this is still head and shoulders above any other forum, I just wish more people would heed jjgman21's advise above. And posts like this one ^^^^ What do they accomplish? This isn't a thread on debate tactics, its a thread on the signing of Jason Marquis. I don't like it. There is a good chance that he will not get better and you will be on the hook for 21+ over 7 years. The following young pitchers can outperform Marquis. Sean Marhsall Carlos Marmol Juan Mateo There was really no point to this signing.

    Like I said, a team that finishes dead last in the NL will bring that on. Marquis was a bad signing. What do you expect? People holding hands and signing "koom by ya"?

    Can the end result be that Jason Bay is a Cub? I'd also like to add that if the Hendry wants to move Hill out of the rotation he should be fired on the spot...no questions asked.
