  1. I have both pitchers in fantasy-I think I have to go ahead and start both of them. With that said, it won't impact my wanting them to crush Hamels tomorrow. I'm glad to see some success in the batter/pitcher matchups, even though they are very, very limited samples.
  2. Tank Johnson is scheduled to meet Wednesday with Roger Goodell: http://www.nfl.com/nflnetwork/story/10033511
  3. I bet you'll probably see a lineup of Ramirez/ Floyd or Ward/DeRosa/Floyd or Ward next inning.
  4. don't patronize me. i am completely aware that we have a lot of left-handed bats (and not once did i say i wanted a right-hander in CF - i don't care. don't put words in my mouth). the fact of the matter is that pie could potentially hit them (but a moot point now that he was optioned). jones has proven over the course of his entire major league career that he can not. IIRC, Jones had a higher OPS in the majors against LHP last year then Pie did against them at Triple A. Maybe Pie will learn to hit them later in his career, but playing Pie against left-handers right now would not produce good results.
  5. No, not really. He's having to learn the position on the fly, he will make mistakes. I don't see how he's learning on the fly? If you're an OF and have played the game for any length of time you have seen flyballs coming at every position from just about every angle. He's probably caught hundreds of those type of flyballs in his lifetime. He just screwed up and dropped a ball that he should have caught. I didn't see the play but it sounds like a bad drop. But you're wrong if you think any OF has seen flyballs coming at every position from just about every angle. A flyball in RF looks different than one in LF. There is definitely an adjustment. It's just a shame they spent all of spring training with Jacque in right, Soriano in center and Murton/Floyd in left, and then decided 3 weeks in to completely flip flop everybody. Every OF regularly takes balls at every single OF position in practice.
  6. One error. The other was Z's. Officially yes, but I think he's referencing that Murton let the ball bounce right past him in the first which let the Pirates go for extra bases.
  7. It's down from last year, but it's above league average. http://www.fangraphs.com/graphs.aspx?playerid=6307&position=OF&page=0&type=full
  8. I haven't seen him drop his arm in this inning (haven't seen all the pitches)-that at least is an improvement.
  9. I don't think any of those fit this sentence: Bako is a journeyman catcher who wasn't paid much and has been on 3 other teams after the Cubs. Blanco was going to be signed by the Yankees if the Cubs hadn't signed him in the offseason, so even though he's overpaid there was a market for him. Remlinger and Erye were overpaid, but neither are replacement level players. I'm not convinced that Howry is overpaid. None of those players fit all the qualifications of that sentence. I think Hendry has overpaid a lot-but I challenged that post in particular because I think that sentence is overstating it, and I see variations of it all the time. well, I'm not going to get into a semantic argument - my point is that hendry doesn't learn from his mistakes and regardless of the cost of the players, continues to stock the roster with players of limited or replacement level value. I would argue that he did learn from his mistakes this year-Soriano, DeRosa, Ward, Floyd-none of those players are anywhere close to replacement level. The only one that was is Blanco-and that was only the high expense, because he's one of the better backup catchers out there.
  10. At the end of the day today, Floyd will have around 5 AB's more than Murton. While a 50/50 split may not be ideal, it's far from demonstrating a veteran fetish.

  12. Pagan probably will start 1-2 games a week-that's about the average amount of times the team should face a left-hander, and Pagan was brought up to play against LHP. That makes no sense...Pagan was terrible vs LHP last season. So is Jones, and so is Pie. It's not a great option, but it will hopefully be a small improvement, and Pagan has been good against LHP so far this year in the minors.

  14. Can you give a list-I can only think of two players right now-Perez and Izturis. I'll start: Macias Pagan Womack . . . He said absurd prices for a large role-all of those players were minimum salary players, and as far as I know none of them were signed to be anything other than a bench player.

  16. During the offseason, Bruce said that the Nats were "asking the moon" for Church, and obviously the Cubs weren't willing to pay that just for a CF for one year at most.
  17. Lineups Pirates Sanchez Bautista Bay Doumit Nady LaRoche Paulino Wilson Maholm Cubs Soriano Theriot Lee Ramirez Murton DeRosa Blanco Pagan Zambrano
  18. The only stats I think that are known about Pagan against LHP besides this year's data is his major league data from last year, when he was terrible against them in 56 at-bats. Hopefully that was an aberration. His 2005 numbers are just as bad. Where are you finding his 2005 splits?

  20. That's just fine. While Pagan if he's anything like last year won't be the defensive help that the team needs, he will be a better offensive player right now than Pie especially to play against left-handers. Add in the help to Pie's development and this makes this a very good move.
  21. Maybe, but I would be surprised-the team has faced 4 left-handers this year, and Izturis hasn't started at SS against any of them.
  22. That's a pretty funny defense. A guy can't hit lefties and needs a platoon partner. So the GM is trying to get rid of him. And since he spent so much time trying to find anybody to take him, he didn't try to get a platoon partner. But, because nobody would take him, we have to keep him and play him everyday even though he's a blatant platoon player. It's like the self fulfilling prophecy of negligent management. Either way it's poor planning. It's not a defense-I agree that it was poor planning, and I hope it's corrected soon by either finding a SS (which might let Theriot play CF) or finding a RH platoon partner for CF.
  23. Yeah, it would be shocking to me if Blanco didn't start this game: day game after night game Barrett caught 15 innings 2 nights ago left-hander on the mound for the opposition Blanco is 2-5 against this pitcher Z is on the mound All the factors say a Blanco start is coming. My guess is that the rest of the lineup will be the same, but there could be 1 or 2 other small changes. My first instinct would be to think he'd sit Jones, since he's really cooled down after that brief hot streak, and already ranks third on the team in most playing time. And of course since he can't hit lefties at all, and never has. But when you think about how much stock Lou puts into coddling his veterans' egos and the thought of showing faith in Jones by putting him right back out there, I begin to doubt that idea. But it would be smart to give Felix "I've got 6 at bats in the past 7 days" Pie a start before he rots any further, at least taking advantage of his clear defensive edge over Jones. The next most likely change I have is the Pie for Jones today, but the only reason I'm reluctant is two things-1) I'm not sure Lou wants to put Pie or Blanco in the 7 spot, and 2) Lou seems to like double-switching Pie in for whichever OF batted last in the middle innings.
  24. please read the thread before you start mocking people. jones is useless against LHP, and if lou absolutely insists on using him against them, it's better for the team if he's somehow gone. Lou doesn't absolutely insist it-it's simply that there's nobody else. When Soriano was playing CF, Jones was benched every time the team started against a LHP. Yesterday, he got moved down to 8th-Lou understands completely that Jones is terrible against left-handed pitching. The problem is, there is nobody to go to on the bench who is better. I really think this is on Hendry. Floyd is a redundant player. Murton did not have drastic platoon splits last year. Jones did. We got Murton a platoon partner and not Jones. The only problem I have right now is that Pie is on the team sitting the bench. If he isnt going to play send him down and bring up Walker or Pagan. At the time of course, Jones wasn't sure to be on the team this long, so there was no need to find a platoon partner with him. I'd still try to find one though, because even when you turn the job over to Pie it would be good if he didn't play against left-handers. I'm trying to think of who might be available right now.
  25. Wolf-7 GS, 41 IP, 44 H, 44K/13BB, 4 HBP, 6 HR, 4.61 ERA, 1.39 WHIP Padilla-7 GS, 42 IP, 40 H, 17K/21BB, 3 HBP, 8 HR, 4.93 ERA, 1.452 WHIP Of course a lot of people wanted Schmidt+ rookie-that wouldn't have worked out too well. Also, here's one more pitcher that was wanted over the offseason: Westbrook-6 GS, 27 1/3 IP, 32 H, 18 K/14 BB, 1 HBP, 6 HR, 7.90 ERA, 1.683 WHIP
