    Just to clarify for anyone looking, that 11th in walks allowed that he posted actually means that the Cubs have been the 6th best team at preventing walks from their pitchers. Even people who have watched the games this year I think would not believe that, but it's true. Here are some other stats: Starters ERA: 3.78 (6th in league) Bullpen ERA: 3.14 (5th in league) 8th in HR's (I bet the team will be top 3 or 4 before all is said and done) The only bad stat they have is that they are 13th in walks-but they are still on pace to walk over 100 times more than last year. That .334 OBP number keeps slowly rising-I expect it to level off pretty soon here. If the team can have between a .335-.340 OBP on the season, I will be very happy. That would be a top 5 OBP in the NL each of the last 2 years, and combined with their slugging would make the team one of the best scoring teams in the league. Plus, this offense has been on a roll now for a little while. In their last 16 games, they are averaging 5.625 runs per game. In their last 11, it's been 5.9. In their last 7, it's been 6.43 runs per game.

    I said the same thing a week or two ago, and CubinNY, who was at the Iowa game that night, replied with this reason why he hasn't been able to make it to the majors: If he's terrible at both the middle IF positions, that would explain why nobody was willing to take a chance on him even with his good bat.

    He still doesn't have a win, even after a little starting last year? Nope-he didn't get in a win in 10 starts last year, 5 relief appearances last year, or 4 relief appearances this year.

    It's Guzman. The Cubs need this game tomorrow so Guzman's start just becomes a bonus if they win that game.

    I don't think that's it-I just think Lou changes his mind constantly on just about everything. Things seem to be tried, then discarded, and then tried again. I'm sure Theriot will be back in as starting SS in a week or so, and then he'll probably be out again a week later-it's been a very strange process so far this season.

    I have Tom Gordon, who of course went on the DL this morning. I have B.J. Ryan sitting on the DL already, so I can't shift Gordon there. Should I wait it out with Gordon, or should I pick up another closer and drop Gordon? Myers is gone, so that is not an option. Here are some of the top saves guys on the market right now: Wickman (also hurt) Joakim Soria Akinori Otsuka Any advice on what I should do?

    $5m is decent if he produces at last year's clip. It sucks if you get what you got in his worst years. "This market" has been pitching heavy anyway. Mediocre hitters are not nearly as overpaid as mediocre pitchers. I would disagree-5 million is market value if you get Jacque's bad years, and better than market value if you get some of his good years. Here are the right fielders making around 5 million (between 4 and 6) and last year's OPS: Randy Winn-.720 Eric Byrnes: .795 Jose Guillen: .674 Juan Encarnacion: .760 Jay Payton: .743 Jacque is one of the best mid-range guys out there.

    I'm in the boat that says its great he has gotten off to this kind of start and that it is probably due to Rothschild's coaching, but the key with Marquis seems to be will he continue to trust his stuff and repeat his motion after getting rocked once or twice. Can he stay confident and find it again? I think things will even out over the course of this season. I'll be shocked if he finishes with an ERA under 3.50. I expect he'll be between 4 and 4.5 by the end of the year and I'd be happy with that. That's what I expect as well-somewhere between 4 and 4.5, which means he would be an above average starter for this year-I'd definitely take it.

    To be fair, it wasn't quite like that. The Pirates pinch-hit with Nate McLouth. The Brewers brought Shouse in to face McLouth, but the Pirates then took him down and pinch-hit Eldred-so the Brewers walked him. If the Pirates had left McLouth in, Shouse would have pitched to him.

    What is the NL going to do....? :P Overall, they will rejoice but I was hoping that the Astros would play well tonight. ;) I have no problem with the Astros losing every game right now. The farther they fall out of the race, the less likely it becomes that Clemens joins them.

Just call me bizarre because I'd be watching these games even if the Cubs were in first place. :lol: My interest is a bit more intense this season however... Maybe that's because the Cubs actually have an offense this year? I wouldn't say that yet. The Cubs have the second-best runs scored to runs allowed ratio in the NL. And the 4th best runs per game in the NL, and in the past 3 weeks probably have been in the top 2-3.

    very good point I was thinking that too. Then I realized anyone who can't pick up the sarcasm in a Jacque Jones and Cesar Izturis for ARod trade, is a moron and I don't care if they are apart of NSBB. Now if you wanna talk about the joke being overused, I can get on board with that. On sports talk radio though and several message boards I've seen, people propose trades like that all the time-and they are completely serious.

    I'd rather have Jacque than the IF's well, but only one IF on the bench is not a particularly great situation. If you demote Cedeno for example and then need another IF when one or 2 of the IF's have nagging injuries, what are you going to do? An OF has to go pretty soon, and even though Jacque adds something to this team he may just be the odd man out. So we'd stick with 4 OF's? or can ward play OF in the end of games if need be? I don't think we'd have any problem with OF's. Like you said, Ward can play if need be, and one of the backup infielders can come into the game and either Theriot or DeRosa can move out to the outfield if need be late.

    The only thing I always wonder about is if it drives away some of the people that this board would like to have as members because it appears so much like talk radio trade proposals. While they are sarcastic, someone who hasn't read the board for a long time might not know that, especially when they see it multiple times in different threads.

    What a strange inning in the Mariners-Red Sox game Daisuke pitching and walks the bases loaded. The next guy grounds out and a run scores. After that, a hit by pitch. Then a double scoring two, followed by two errors by Lugo scoring 2 more. Finally, back to back outs end the inning. Mariners score 5 runs on 1 hit and still leave 2 people on base.

    From today's Jason Stark column: I wonder if he has heard that from a Cubs official, but I am not surprised that they are trying to trade Jones. This is the first sort of confirmation though that they've made the decision to keep Pie up.     In History This year I think he meant the fact that he has doubles in 8 games in a row. I haven't found the leaders for the most games ever in a row though.

    This pitcher has had 4 quality starts in a row against the Braves, Phillies twice, and the Mets. Also, none of the Cubs starters have faced him-hopefully Z can have a good day on the other side because this is going to be a tough matchup because of those two facts above.

    I am amazed at how quickly his OPS is flying up. It's at 843 after today's game. I would never have guessed that number after his start. In fact, he passed DeRosa for the 3rd most productive offensive player on the team today, and he could easily pass Ramirez over the next day or two if he remains hot. I hope he can push that to around 900 or over.

    Yes, are pythagorean record is 16-10 right now. We have the biggest difference in the league at 4 games. The only two teams at at 3 game difference are the Yankees (who are 3 games under what they are supposed to be) and the Brewers (who are 3 games over what they are supposed to be).
