    I don't understand how he "seriously" injures himself while falling down trying to catch a popup. It's not like he overexerted himself. He basically just fell down like a wet noodle. He is a big boy, that is alot of momentum. But seriously, losing Ward and his 8 RBI's this season will just "kill us". Not good news at all. Cancel the season folks. While losing Ward isn't a big blow, citing his 8 RBIs is a pretty poor argument to make, especially considering how often he plays. In only 63 AB he has a .456 OBP and a .900 OPS. Sample Size Well, if you want to go back to last year's numbers he had a .380 OBP and a 926 OPS in 130 AB's. Like someone else said, it's not a huge deal if they can find a big upgrade in right field and Floyd can become the big pinch hitter off of the bench, but it still hurts. Other teams were basing some of their strategy on Ward in the late innings a decent amount of the time-from who they brought in to pitch to the intentional walks that he received.

    Ouch. If it's a serious injury that's a decent loss for the Cubs. Ward has been a very dependable bat for the team so far. The Cubs do have options to use the spot on the 25 man roster effectively, which will certainly help make sure that it is as minimal of loss as possible.

    If I understand my rules, the PTBNL cannot be Nady. Hmm why is that? PTBNL's can not be in the same league as the team they were traded for. Since the Pirates and Cubs both play in the National League, it has to be a minor leaguer.

    The lineup is up on minorleaguebaseball.com, but for some reason it's not showing on my computer. Can someone else post the lineup. I'm interested to see if Murton is playing tonight. Patterson-2B Pie-CF Murton-RF Soto-C Coats-LF Cedeno-SS Moore-1B Nelson-3B Mathes-P Hmm... Josh Kroeger not in the lineup for the 2nd night in a row. He had a pinch hit appearance last night. Wonder why he's not playing tonight? If it is Kroeger, it wouldn't surprise me at all. There are several right-handers coming up, and here are Murton's and Kroeger's splits against right-handers in Iowa: Kroeger: .314/.397/.627 Murton: .276/.341/.474 To come up for good, you select Murton (especially considering Floyd is the other right fielder). For a few days to start when right-handers will mostly be on the mound? Kroeger is a great option for that because he has just been absolutely destroying right-handed pitching at both Tennessee and Iowa.

    One thing - Braun has mashed at every level. He's playing over his head, yes, but not like Hardy was. The question on Braun has always been his defense, not his ability at the plate. He may cool off, but he won't plummet. Yeah, I don't think anybody is expecting Braun to drop down to become a bad player. He is going to be one of the better offensive third basemen in the league. I just think most people are expecting him to drop at least into the 900 OPS range, which would still be 150 points below what he is right now.

    Arizona's numbers against Marquis don't look as good as I thought they might-of course, they haven't faced him much, and Hudson and Jackson do have 1 home run each. Byrnes and Tracy, the two Diamondbacks that have faced Marquis the most, are a combined 1-20 against him with 3 BB's. The other side doesn't look good at all. Ward has a triple and a HR against Webb, but he might be out. Lee is suspended. Aramis is only 4/18 with 1 HR against him. Floyd is only 4/15. DeRosa is only 1/9. It's going to be really tough to score runs against Webb-the Cubs have to be patient and try to score runs off the Diamondbacks bullpen.

    The good thing at Marmol is that they haven't been pitching him on back to back days. He hasn't pitched on two consecutive days since June 26th-27th. So that's leaving his arm somewhat fresh even though he's typically throwing between 1 and 2 innings each times out.

    They need to try to get another inning or two out of him if they can though. Otherwise the bullpen will be a little tired going into the weekend. Also, pinch hitters are not plentiful on the bench. Fox, Pagan, and K. Hill. If you use 1 of the 3 in the 3rd, you have very little flexibility whatsoever later in the game.

    The bemoaning happened while Izturis was on the roster in the first place. That's already been done pretty much everyday while he was here, so there's no reason to go over it again when he's gone. Now is simply evaluating the trade, and the trade is reason for celebration.

    No, that was a Mothers day Game in 2004 I believe. Clement started for the Cubs, and it was like 11-10 Cubs after 4 when the game was stopped and cancelled due to rain.

    Izturis was loved by Hendry and co also, but they didn't give him an extension. I think the only ways they give Kendall one is 1) If he plays really really well from now till the end of the season or 2) if the team makes it to the WS with him as the starting catcher even if he's not playing that well.

    Yeah, several sources were indicating a week or two ago that they wanted to trade Izturis so that Cedeno could come up. I'm not sure exactly when he will with Lee's suspension (and the callup of Jake Fox today), but if he isn't up by Tuesday I'll be very surprised.

    We'll just pretend that's what they're paying Theriot to actually be somewhat useful at SS. I wouldn't have had a problem with paying 6/3 of Izturis' remaining contract. Sometimes it's just better to pay someone to play for someone else than to continue playing him on your own team. I don't get it... why would Selig allow this and not the Jacque Jones deal? If Selig struck down the Jacque deal (which has basically been refuted) that was a deal in which the Cubs were going to send the Marlins about 6 million dollars. In this deal, the Cubs only send a little over 1 million to the Pirates-that's a huge difference.

    That's not too surprising. The Cubs should still make a few hundred thousand back on this deal though.

    Cedeno will probably come up in the next day or two as well. It will be Cedeno and Dempster up, a pitcher (probably Gallagher) and a position player (either Fox or Fontenot) down.

    Assuming we are going to send Fox back down, I don't like burning one of his option years on 4 games. For the love of God, let Ward start!!! Fox is going to turn 25 tomorrow. This will be his first option used, so he will be 28 during the season when his options run out (assuming they send him up and down every season until then). If he's still being shuttled back and forth from the minors at 28, there probably won't be that much concern if the Cubs lose him.

    I agree that Fox will likely be sent down in the next couple of days, and that Gallagher was probably the casualty for now. There's one more possibility though-how about Fontenot? He has really cooled down, and his ability to only play one position really hurts the Cubs flexibility. The Cubs might have decided that they need to get better against LHP-Fox can play in right field in those days, which allows DeRosa to move to second. Also, Fox can play third on the days that Ramirez takes off and DeRosa plays second. If not a trade, Gallagher is almost certainly going down today. I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that Fox will go down instead of Fontenot when Dempster is activated though.

    No he's not. I'd definitely prefer to have my pinky toe cut off than my entire leg. Wait, so you would prefer that the Cubs get rid of Pagan before getting rid of Jones? No. I don't want either my leg or my toes to be amputated. I prefer that neither happen just as I prefer that niether Jones nor Pagan were on the team. There are 47 CF's with 100 or more plate appearances this year. Pagan is 13th in OPS out of those 47. To be fair, last year Pagan finished 34th out of 45 in CF's-but that would put him right in the middle of backups. As a starter, Pagan would be awful. I'm wondering how much more you can expect though for a backup OF that can play CF. If you look around the league, there probably aren't 5 backup CF's that have put up the numbers that Pagan has had for the Cubs in 2006/2007 combined (and if there are 5, I would wager there certainly aren't 10).

    So that means the Cubs didn't actually take on any money whatsoever in this series of catcher trades. They saved about .97 million from Barrett, paid approximately 70K to Bowen for his month, and then are going to pay the remaining 900K in savings they got to Kendall. Go figure. So, can the Cubs still add salary? They keep insisting they can. I'm sure you heard the report on ESPN last night that they were assured that the Cubs had "a lot of flexibility to add payroll" at the deadline even with the ownership change. It remains to be seen what that really means.

    It certainly does point to the fact that the Cubs traded Barrett because of his ongoing feud with Z, which didn't seem to be over based on their reactions when Barrett was traded. A lot of people thought it was just a move to bring in more defense, but this move would indicate that's not the case. It must have gotten bad enough that the Cubs decided one of Z or Barrett had to go, and Barrett was the obvious choice there. Also, remember that the deal would be Barrett and Blevins for Kendall and Kyler Burke.

    Well, Soriano has not been so good against Zito in his career. 5 for 36 with 1 2B, 4 BB's, and 12 K's. Ouch.

    I've seen the Marshall report at one or two other sites, but the Bowen/Blevins deal is on many more sites. Plus, some people had to hear Jim Hendry's interview-if Marshall was dealt, there would have been a lot of outrage about it by now. Add to that the Cubs site says Bowen/Blevins, and that seems to be what it is. Hopefully Kendall can be more of the OBP guy that he was in earlier years. The Cubs catchers have a .265 OBP as a catcher this year (including Barrett's numbers with the Cubs). If Kendall can improve that with a .340 in the second half, then it will turn out to be a pretty good deal. If he doesn't, then there isn't that much risk to the deal.
