  1. and also gained 8 spots in the batting order. If they had let Lou move Pie to 9th in the batting order and the pitcher to 8th, he likely would have done that. Unfortunately that's against the rules, and Pie was the logical choice to be double switched out of the game there. Of course, it's all predicated on Hart being effective enough to go multiple innings, which he hasn't shown so far in this outing.
  2. If I looked at it right, Sheets has now tied his career high for walks allowed in a game with 6.
  3. Not sure. When the ground ball puts a fielder and the baserunner hitting the same spot at the same time, whose responsibility is it to avoid a collision? The runner is entitled to the basepaths. Weeks was RIGHT ON the basepath when he fielded that ball. It's his fault and he's lucky he didn't get called for interference. I'm pretty sure that's not true. If a runner interferes with a fielder attempting to make a play on the ball, the runner can get called out.
  4. How many is Theriot up to now? 5. One more and he equals his CS total from his 06 and 07 totals in the majors combined. Teams are much more aware of him now, and he's attempted way too may so far. He only attempted 32 last year (made 28) and he's on pace to attempt closer to 70 this year, which is simply way too many for his speed.
  5. That pretty much assures that Theriot is the SS tonight. My guess is that Fontenot gets another start at 2B, and Fontenot will be the leadoff batter and Theriot 2nd. I'm under the impression that Fontenot went into Lou's doghouse this weekend. Yea I can't imagine why Lou would start Fontenot over Ronny seeing as he loves playing the hot bat. I would think that Pie would be batting 2nd tonight if that was the case. He might bat Theriot first and then either Ronny, Fukudome, or DeRosa 2nd, but it would be a change to what Lou has typically done and would indicate a real change towards how he views Cedeno. Edit: or Johnson could be in LF. I don't know why I completely forgot that was an option. That makes much more sense. Thanks Bruce.
  6. They're both only decent, but when they're your top two QB's, it hurts pretty badly. Those 2 being gone was probably one of the only reasons that UCLA losing a few of their games last year, including their most embarrassing loss against N.D. when their 3rd QB tossed 6 INT's.

  8. Of course you have to add in that you have 5 million dollars less each year to spend in 2009, 2010, and 2011 (2011 as long as Lugo's option vests, which he is on pace to do). Considering those are the years that the Cubs might have the biggest budget crunch (transition of ownership change+other big contracts that run through those years that likely won't be renewed after that), that should be an important consideration. Personally, I feel the Cubs best window is the next couple of years, so I'd rather take what I think is the better production (Soriano) and the best financial flexibility for the next few years (also Soriano) rather than the shorter contracts.
  9. Cameron has actually been pretty bad against the 3 Cubs starters scheduled to go in this series. A combined 5 for 24 with 1 double, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts. He also hits home runs every game against the Cubs. Only Rich Hill. The last home run Cameron hit off of the Cubs that wasn't Hill was Greg Maddux in 2004, and you have to go back to before 2002 to find the next one after that. Of course, I'm in the game thread, so it's possible everybody knows that, was intentionally using sarcasm, and I just didn't get it. Sorry for my lack of humor if that's the case :D

  11. I highly doubt this is the case. Pie has been pretty good since they started working with him, and Lou in several interviews has been very impressed with his work ethic. It's just not the type of player who Lou would become frustrated with quickly. I think it's more speculation based on the fact that Pie hasn't played much recently (because of his week off and then the rash of left-handers lately).
  12. But Wrigley pays absolutely nothing for the naming rights, so there is absolutely no change here. Wrigley was not willing to pay for the naming rights before, they still won't now. It's just up to the Cubs if the Wrigley name stays or if they actually sell the rights.
  13. He got on base quite a bit this weekend (7 times on base in 14 plate appearances) but you're right, the rest of his game has been pretty terrible.
  14. It's 8 days off and every pitcher on the team but Lilly will have pitched 2 games in between Hill's starts. He's being skipped. I can't believe there's this much of a dispute as to whether it's a "skip" or a "shuffle." I stand corrected. For some reason I thought that Hill pitched on Thursday, not Wednesday. And you're right, that pushes it over the line into a skip IMO.
  15. I see no reason why he wouldn't..the lineup will likely be close to the last two days..something like this: Johnson Theriot Lee Ramirez Fukudome DeRosa Cedeno Blanco Lilly
  16. Thankfully for him the Nationals intentionally walked him in the 8th inning last night. If not for that at-bat, Soto would be 1 strikeout away from matching the major league record for most consecutive strikeouts. Is that record for consecutive ABs or consecutive PAs? It would of course be PAs because a walk wouldn't affect ABs, silly. But yeah, I think I see what you mean; I think the record would be closer to 9 in a row than 6. It is 9 in a row. That's why the intentional walk threw it off. Soto struck out in his first 3 at-bats on Friday, then got intentionally walked, then struck out all 5 times on Saturday. And I'm not sure if it AB's or PA's. My guess it would have to be PA's, but I cannot be sure about that. This record only counts position players only btw.
  17. My guess is that was Soto's last at-bat of the series. Blanco is halfway decent against left-handers, so putting him into the lineup doesn't hurt as much, and with a day game after 2 night games I'm guessing he'll be in there tomorrow.
  18. What do you know about Pollak? It's a good bet he's good since Colt management likes him, but I know next to nothing about him. Well, let's see. He's a natural leader on the field, which is essential to be the center for the Colts. He is really good at getting to the second level and is pretty agile, which means he's going to do well for the stretch play. He's more of a pass blocker than a run blocker, also a Colts trait. His great intelligence is the thing said over and over again though, and that is probably what led the Colts to pick him.

  20. I have no idea how I did not predict the Colts pick. I got too worried about what the Colts might need this year, and completely forgot their usual strategy. Select the best center on the board because your great center is a free agent next year. Then put him at guard this year to get experience at an easier position, and then he's ready to slide over to center if your All-Pro center is not re-signed. That's the exact path they wanted to take with Ugoh last year for left tackle, but Glenn's sudden retirement changed their plans. I'm very happy with the pick even though it made it a very boring day.
  21. To borrow from PJ O'Rourke, Giving Lou Piniella the opportunity to call for stolen bases is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys. It's strange, because that was one of the things that he was praised for when he was hired. His teams during his managerial career had always been one of the best in stolen base percentage.
  22. Pretty close. With that failed attempt, there are now only 6 worse teams when it comes to percentage.
  23. If I remember right, after tomorrow the Cubs don't face many at all over the next couple of weeks.
  24. It depends on the team. Some teams will drop quite a few players off of their board entirely because of character issues. I know the Colts only have 150 players on their entire draft board this year, and that's probably a big reason why. There's probably 10 other teams that are extremely hesitant to take somebody with any character issues. Then you have the 5-6 teams who simply don't care about character, and the other 15 are somewhere in between.
