  1. I'd be very surprised if that happened. Dempster's career numbers as a starter are lousy. Marquis has at least put up a few league-average seasons.
  2. Georgia and Belmont were both in a position to make things a lot easier for Purdue, but neither of them could hold on to win. I would have gladly taken the hit to my bracket to see Duke and Xavier lose.
  3. That's not accurate at all.
  4. But I've seen worse (like the yahoo.com white sox box score from last year that had them scoring negative runs in order to correct for having them score more runs then the actually did, and I believe in one inning scoring a letter). I was at the game. I can assure you there were not eight balks.
  5. Wood actually does a decent job of holding runners. Nah not from what I remember. The way he throws across his body, his slower delivery motion and with his propensity to throw sliders in the dirt when he is not fully warmed up, I can see guys running on him. I'll have to check on those stats though and see what the steal ratio is on him. Marmol has a lot more of that quick, whiplike Juan Cruz'ish snap delivery that would be harder to run on. Runners have stolen 83 bases in 126 attempts (65.9% success rate) against Wood in his career. He's picked off 17 runners. While he may not be the fastest to the plate, he has a decent move to first and a very good move to second.

  7. He signed, traded for, or drafted those players. He hired the person responsible for making sure they perform. He should definitely be held accountable if the team isn't performing. I'm not going to get stuck in a vicious cycle. We can agree to disagree. To say that you feel Hendry shouldn't be held accountable for it is one thing. To label it unreasonable is, well...unreasonable. Management is management. If you manage someone who manages a dozen other people, you are still ultimately responsible for those other 12 people. One of my employees is an Assistant Manager and manages 14 people. If one of them does something wrong, and my boss hears about it, he doesn't go to my Assistant Manager, he comes to me. Why? Because in the end, I'm still responsible for my department, whether I created the problem or someone two levels away from me did. I'm still responsible for making sure the issue gets resolved. Saying that Hendry should be held accountable doesn't make the manager or the player any less accountable for their own performance. No one is shifting blame away from the manager or from the player. But the blame does certainly go higher than them, especially when Hendry is the one that assembled this team.

  9. I'm sorry if Hendry is held accountable for the players on the field, then I just don't get it. He's not the MANAGER. Now if Hendry doesn't do everything in his power to improve the holes on this team, then yes, I would him accountable. But to hold him accountable for the players on the field, is simply wrong. Hendry hires the manager. He is the manager's boss. He is ultimately responsible for what the manager does. If the manager isn't getting the job done, then Hendry needs to work with the guy to improve the situation or find a replacement.
  10. He didn't? He slugged .554 in the second half. I'd say he showed that he can still hit for power. Yes, it would be nice if he could do that for a full season, but it's not accurate to say he never got his power stroke back.
  11. Actually, sac bunts don't hurt your OBP. Sac flies do.
  12. Sac flies count against you. ETA: I should probably be more specific. Sac flies are not counted as an at-bat when calculating batting average. However, they do count against you when figuring OBP. OBP = (H + BB + HBP)/(AB + BB + HBP + SF) If you have more sac flies than HBP and BB combined, your OBP will be lower then your batting average.
  13. I think it started with Tommy Herr and the 80s Cards teams. I believe Herr batted third on those teams. He spent a lot of time in the first and second spots in the order prior to '85. Starting in 1985, he was primarily used as the #3 hitter.
  14. Yep. He's pitched 1/3 of an inning this spring.
  15. i'm not certain, but i think the tiebreaker in that case would be their record against the top four teams. basically, whoever has the better combined record against IU, PU, MSU and WISC. and does the #1 seed always face the 6 vs. 11 winner, or do they reorder so they play lowest surviving seed? Is the tie-breaker overall record or head-to-head? If it's head-to-head, Purdue would be the #1 seed, since they beat Wisconsin twice this season. Right, Purdue is the #1 seed unless Wisconsin wins the league outright. Minnesota would win the tiebreaker then with OSU because they had the fortune to only lose to Wisconsin and Purdue once each (easiest schedule in the conference this year). That assumes they finish tied of course. Just hope the Boilers don't piss it away tonight at Ohio State.

  17. You and I interpret his comments very differently. When I see this: "We'll cross that path when it comes, obviously," he said. "I've got to take the ball whenever they give it to me and get guys out." I don't read it as an ultimatum. I agree that Marquis should have to earn it. However, the guys he should be battling for that spot are Marshall and Gallagher, not Dempster. I'd be pissed, too, if a guy who has flat out sucked as a starter in his career was basically handed the third spot in the rotation while I'm forced to compete for the fifth spot.
  18. You know that these things have to be said. I didn't expect it to get any worse then it was. Lou should be the one apologizing though? That's stupid. Marquis should apologize for thinking anyone cares what his opinion is. He hasn't built up the cache to make statements about who should be starting and who shouldn't. Lou was completely in line with what he said. Did Marquis just come out and say these things, or was it in response to a question from the media? If it was in response to a question, I see no reason for him to apologize. From what I've read, he simply expressed a desire to start and that he feels he has earned that right. Nothing indicates that he drew a line in the sand or anything. And how do we even know that he didn't apologize to Lou? If Marquis needed to apologize, why would it have to be a public apology? Lou overreacted, plain and simple. He should have waited to hear Marquis' exact words before responding. Marquis wasn't exactly an All-Star last year, but he's been league-average or better in three of the past four years. Not a staff ace, but an OK back of the rotation guy (although he's getting paid a bit much for that role). As much as he struggled down the stretch last season, I still have more faith in him as a starter than I do in Dempster.
  19. Are you just picking best seasons at each position in Cubs history? If so... C - Hartnett (1930) 1B - Lee (2005) 2B - Hornsby (1929) SS - Banks (1958) 3B - Santo (1964) LF - Williams (1972) CF - Wilson (1930) RF - Sosa (2001)
  20. I think an interesting discussion would be: who is the best Indiana tournament team? IU, Purdue, Notre Dame, Butler? They're practically interchangeable. Good luck with that one. I like Butler the best because guards usually win in the tournament. Purdue is either going to do pretty well or get beat out right away. IU has the talent to go pretty far, but have struggled with bad teams while beating good teams. Notre Dame is a solid bet for the sweet 16. Just don't count out Purdue in the first round. They always seem to win their first game. After that, however... Oh I know, they gave Florida their best game last year. I just think with having all underclassmen, they could be very rone for an upset. Agreed. I'm cautiously optimistic, since this team has done better on the road/at neutral sites than previous Purdue teams. However, even though they've been playing extremely well in conference season, they do still make some mistakes that could be attributed to youth. Hopefully, they'll keep those to a minimum in the tournament.
  21. This is similar to a thread I started last year: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=40566&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a You basically had to make a roster choosing one (and only one) player from each of the last 25 years to make your 25-man roster.
  22. there has to be a better CF year than Dernier's 1984. hell at least a couple of the brian mcrae and corey patterson years had to be better. rod beck's 1998 and JoeBo's 2003 were both better than lee smith in 1984. and lee smith's 1983 is miles better than all of them. he might've had a horseshoe up his rear that year, but rick wilkins' 30 homer year blows jody davis' 1984 out of the water. Dave Martinez in 1987 was probably better than Dernier's '84. Brian McRae's '96 was definitely better.

  24. They were just talking on XM about how Piniella wanted to use this lineup a lot this season: Soriano Fukudome Lee Ramirez DeRosa Pie Theriot Soto Of course, we all know he'll change the lineup regularly. Barring a trade or injury, the only guys that will probably get 100+ games in the same spot in the order are Soriano (1st), Lee (3rd) and Ramirez (4th).
  25. Wait a minute...are you criticizing someone for not answering a question?
