  1. Because Silva's one of the better FA options. He's going to be priced out of the Cubs range, so don't worry about it. If you want a second Japanese player to go with Fukudome to ease his transition, don't get in a bidding war over a guy may wind up being a LOOGY. Take a flier on Tomohiro Nioka. He's interested in coming to the majors this year. He's not a great player, he's maybe the third best shortstop in Japan, but he has enough power to hit 10 home runs and could hit .280/.320 or so. He is a shortstop and is supposedly pretty good there defensively. If we don't have a plan to replace Theriot, signing this guy and having the two splitting time wouldn't be the worst idea in the world. I don't think Nioka is going to generate a lot of buzz to the point where he's expensive.
  2. Probably not much. If Hendry has a chance to add a good starter you could see the Dempster decision reversed like it was this year. I'd be willing to bet there's a 75% chance Ryan Dempster does not start a game in April for the Chicago Cubs.
  3. Hitoki Iwase would be fine considering the nearly 100% success rate of Japanese relievers crossing The Lake. I don't think he's as good as Ishii (hurt these days) or our god, Fujikawa but he's better than Okajima. Iwase routinely has a 65:8 or so K:BB. He's got good control, decent slide piece and a decent fastball. He's more americanized than Okajima. He's not the blow away guy that Ishii or Fujikawa would be. I'm fairly certain Fujikawa would strike out 120 batters in 80 innings his first year here. He's actually more than likely moving to Hanshin's rotation next season if they can't sign Kenshin Kawakami or Kuroda. Kawakami is another guy who might be here this offseason. Kawakami might be a borderline 4/5 guy but probably a setup guy. Alright fastball good command. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/640355,cubs110707.article cdl arrives to the japanese party.
  4. I remember the da lounge, i was never invited, but i heard the rumors.. so have i. i want in.
  5. 9 months is one full game of Oblivion and Assassin's Creed with some Resistance thrown in. You'll be fine.
  6. He showed signs of not being good....ie dump him before the rest of the league realizes this. Though he was a better alternative than trachsel.
  7. Baldelli isn't anywhere close to a stud producer. If his one half season of good production was maintained over a full season, maybe we could talk. But there isn't a whole lot of support for the theory that this would be likely. Sure there is.
  8. Let's trade for Dukes, sign Bradley and have their lockers sandwich Zambrano's. Also sign Michael Barrett. Oh man that would be great.
  9. if we sign kosuke first, then fine. it'll help him transition.
  10. Looks like a few other people heard it and mentioned it at a few other Cubs blogs. its on mlbtraderumors.com so it must be true
  11. The Rays said they want proven veteran pitching too you know
  12. For the record Dempsters DERA is a full quarter of a run better than Marquis' over their career and it isn't because of Dempster being in the bullpen for a couple seasons. Of course I'm including the value gotten with Marshall traded. Youre all just looking at Dempster in the rotation without the gains elsewhere. It's not a simple replace Marshall with Dempster and X happens. We get value for Marshall. We get value for Marmol in late games.
  13. Sell me on it. I'm open to being swayed. Frees up Marshall to be traded with Murton for real OF/SS. We have righty bullpen depth (expecially if we resign Woody). Or, if Prior comes back and is useful. It kicks Marquis out of the rotation. Demp > Marquis you know. The hit to our bullpen would be minimal. It'd help our rotation. He's no less valuable as a starter than Marshall, but Marshall has a lot more trade value. Thus trade him on the market.
  14. Pretty much none of what you said is correct. Gomes and Cantu are completely different players. Neither one had the tools or hand eye coordination to sustain their production. Baldelli certainly does. And no, Rocco's more likely to put up his 2006 numbers than his 2004 numbers. He was 22 in 2004. You just love ignoring the age factor. For like the 100th time, this doesn't matter. If your SLG fuels your OPS high enough fine. When Rocco slugs in the high four-hundred it certainly makes up for his obp woes. There's really not an issue here. OBP is nice, but you can trade some of it for SLG and be better because of it. Baldelli has the potential to hit .320 with 25 homers and gold glove defense in centerfield. His package of tools is as good as anyone's in the game. A 100 OPS+ that is OBP fueled is bad production to. It's subpar for an OFer as well. So you're not getting anywhere. The point is that the rest of Baldellis game makes up for his OBP struggles. It's possible for that to happen.
  15. The Globe is [expletive]. No one is comparing him to Matsuzaka much less saying he's better. The only Japanese pitcher who would warrant those comparisons is Yu Darvish at this time.
  16. <3 There is a reason you're in my signature. Cameron was good.
  17. 150x150 it works well with the google one being 145 +10 pixel buffer
  18. At those prices, the PS3. The game advantage for the Box will be gone in 9 months. You'll also get Blu Ray and a better media center.
  19. And if we didn't trade Jones we'd have some immediate insurance in CF if Rocco's a bust. Not only that Rocco's upside > Pie's upside Pie fanatics. Colvin would be ready in 2009, so there's that too if it doesn't work out.
  20. sure, but is that likely? Maybe, maybe not. Who knows? But there's no harm in coming up with creative ways to improve the Cubs. I kind of like the idea of acquiring Kazmir. Well it's not completely off the wall. The Rays are listening to offers for Kazmir. Here's a question would you trade Rich Hill+ the farm for one year of Johan Santana?
  21. The trade I said? Probably if you factor in the additional year or two of Rich Hill.
  22. His value has never been lower. He's signed through 2011 if the controlling teams pick up the options. He's relatively cheap and will make $2.25m next season. We could trade for pennies on the dollar for him. The Rays can't be asking for much considering getting a comparable hitter for him would be a net break-even with Crawford moving to center. He struggled this season and never got on track before getting hurt. He is, however, a plus defender in center field. His weakness is OBP, but it's not that big of an issue. There's a very good chance he knocks twenty five out next season (maybe thirty in Chicago) with a useful .325 OBP. The only glaring hole in his game is his OBP, but at the same time he will EqA .280 with plus defense with .300 EqA potential. Oh yeah he's been around forever, but he's 26. We'd control him from age 26-29 seasons. We seriously could get him for Matt Murton plus a mid-level prospect. It should be a no-brainer decision.
