  2. If he had a bad case of pharyngitis like he said, I could easily see them shutting down his throwing during the offseason. You don't want him throwing when he's not in shape. If I were Rothschild, I wouldn't be saying he's on pace to make a start against the Reds. It looks to me like he's a little behind that point right now, but probably no more than getting his first start the second time through the rotation.
  3. Where did you find that? Do they have a breakdown for previous years? I've seen 66%, 71%, 75% (from BP, I believe), and 77%. I don't really know what to think of the 66% since that figure is from the early 1980s. I read one study that had the break-even point in the low 60s through the 1960s, but I'd have to believe it's higher than that now. Pierre's career rate is 73.5% and over the past three years, just 73.2%. Even if he is clearing the break-even point, I don't think it's having much of a positive effect.
  4. Sorry, but you immediately contradict yourself here. Moving a runner over is playing for one run. Playing for one run is small ball. I have no issues with calling it fundamentals either, because nearly all aspects of small ball would be considered fundamentals by those who advocate it. There's a difference between trying to move a runner over as the primary goal of the batter and settling for moving him over after failing to drive him in or advance him along with a basehit, though. A batter bunting on the first pitch is different than a batter swinging away until getting to a 2-strike count, shortening up his swing, and then hitting the ball to the right side.
  5. They couldn't beat most junior high B teams today. Really embarrassing.
  6. Isn't anyone above 75% considered to be an effective base stealer? A lot of people see 75% as the break-even line, meaning 3 stolen bases balances out 1 caught stealing. 77% may make it worth it, but it's not exactly good. What would you consider good? Pods' 70 stolen bases to just 13 caught stealing was pretty good in 2004. His 71% last year, not so much (especially considering how much they relied upon the HR). Basically, Pierre's stolen base attempts haven't really had any effect statistically. I do think that it causes pitchers to alter their timing a little bit, but I don't think it has any significant effect. If this team is going to hit around 200 HRs again, I don't want him getting caught stealing that often. This isn't a small ball team, so I'd value OBP and XBHs a lot more than OBP and stolen base totals.
  7. Isn't anyone above 75% considered to be an effective base stealer? A lot of people see 75% as the break-even line, meaning 3 stolen bases balances out 1 caught stealing. 77% may make it worth it, but it's not exactly good. In 2003, he was stealing bases at a 76% rate.
  8. His running isn't particularly effective, though. He was 77% on the bases last season and in 2004, his best year as a Marlin, a dismal 65%. It's not like his stolen base attempts are really making up for the lack of power numbers. He was not good at all at the plate last year and that worries me. If he's healthy and puts up a .374 OBP again, great, but I'm not getting too excited about him yet.
  9. Venezuela will likely play on the 12th and 13th, but it seems more likely that Zambrano will pitch after Johan again on the 12th with Garcia starting on the 13th. Maybe they'd push Z back a day and let him start on the 13th, but I wouldn't count on it.
  10. Looks like it went well today, as well: An updated on Prior: And Z: Rothschild thinks Z will probably follow Johan again out of the 'pen. I hope there's a way to avoid that.
  11. He's not a very good hitter and doesn't even steal bases that effectively. There are quite a few guys I'd rather see on the team than Pagan.

  13. That's gotta hurt for Canada. Impressive pitching, though. That was a nice 2-strike pitch to A-Rod.
  14. Very nice catch. And an even better HR dance by Utley.
  15. Wow, a pitcher working on his mechanics in early March, Sut? I'm shocked.
  16. Wuertz gives up the grand slam.
  17. Jack Cust with a double down the RF line scored Barfield... I'll never forgive Cust for hitting a 2-run HR against the Cubs with 2-outs in the top of the 9th when he was with the Rockies to tie it up. I was already ready to leave that game and had to stay for another 3 and a half innings before Alou homered off the fence behind the family section with Sosa aboard to end it. Nice weather, though, so that made up for me being in a hurry to get back.
  18. Pagan with another XBH, but they hold Soto at third.
  19. Carlos Lee hits one hard but just can't get under it. He lines out to deep left with a runner on and Cubs wins 8-6 in 11. Panama joins China and Taiwan as the only teams to be eliminated so far.
  20. Panama isn't dead yet. Runner on 2nd with nobody out down 2.
  21. Sharp single up the middle and the team that stole the Cubs' "Cuba" script takes a 7-6 lead. Another sharp single makes it 8-6 Cubs. Panama's chances are fading fast.
  22. HBP #7, although this was a curve that just grazed the batter's jersey.
