  1. I don't think it wastes it. The Nebraska and Colorado moves were necessary to put things in motion. If The Big 12 stays together, there really wasn't much more they could do to attract Notre Dame aside from going after 2 Big East schools. But that carries a big risk. They didn't want to be the ones to destabilize the eastern conferences alone. It required the SEC's help. This would just be phase 1. Phase 2 comes in a couple of years or so and Notre Dame shouldn't be less of a possibility then than it was a month ago. If anything, I think the discussions/negotiations the Big Ten has had with Notre Dame during this time will help set things up later.
  2. Keeper really whiffed on that one.
  3. If the Big 12 doesn't collapse, possibly nothing. This would have triggered a chain of events that would have left a lot of instability on the east coast. But if the Big 12 stays together, I don't think Notre Dame has much more of a reason to join the Big Ten. And unless the Big Ten gets Notre Dame, I don't think we're going to see any additional expansion. They'd be wise to hold off a few years for this to start up again and not handcuff themselves with schools that expand the footprint but don't add much else.

  5. Like the pasta they are so famous for. It's a shame that Italian football and Olive Garden have ruined the great impression I once had of Italian culture growing up watching the Super Mario Bros. Super Show.
  6. Can Italians even remain upright when the grass is wet?
  7. Still less than what Neb will make in the Big 10, isn't it? I have no idea what kind of payout CU is getting. Not short term. Nebraska isn't getting a full piece of the pie in the very beginning. There weren't any other details, but my impression is that it could be a few years until they get an equal share. And they're not starting in the Big Ten until July 2011. Though I'm sure it will be an issue for the courts, which could delay any payout for a while.
  8. It will be really interesting to see what the penalty would be for a Big 12 team to leave the conference if this new deal goes through. Could stay the same, could be increased (to create a larger barrier for schools that aren't Texas), or could possibly be decreased.
  9. How do you think Colorado and Nebraska feel right now? There's a lot of money at stake for them.
  10. Texas committing doesn't mean a ton, though. It's up to A&M to stay. If they bolt, there's no conference to commit to. The 6-3 board of regents vote at aTm was to agree to the SEC over the Pac 10. It had nothing to do with staying in the Big 12. If you go back and read the quotes of all the AD's in the Big 12, you'll see one common thread. They've all committed to trying to save the Big 12. I'm hoping (and from what I've been told) that since they're now seeing the big picture in terms of revenue and being allowed to start their own broadcast networks, that the do believe they can stay in the conference and get what they wanted all along. Hoping the SEC talk may now be a moot point. Which was just a way to protect themselves from the blame in case the conference did collapse. It's still a staring contest right now and it's up to A&M on what they want to do. Texas was never going to be the one to blink first, though if they do want to leave, they may have to be the first ones now.

  12. You wouldn't be the only one.
  13. I've held out on my free trial on the NU Rivals board up until yesterday. He means the Big Ten believes they're still alive for Texas. To the Missouri guys here, are you actively rooting for the Big 12 to stay together with 12 teams? It seems like that setup would be doomed for failure in a couple of years, but it would at least buy them some time to figure out what to do when it hits the fan again. Of course, the short-term payoff of splitting the Nebraska and Colorado penalty money would be nice.
  14. yeah, cameroon started pushing the last 15 minutes but they were sloppy the entire match. japan's goalie made a great save in stoppage time but it didn't look like it mattered - i think a foul was called on cameroon just earlier. cameroon needs to beat denmark and probably grab at least one point off of netherlands now. if japan makes it through as the second team from that group (assuming netherlands is first), that would be a really easy second round matchup for the winner of group f. really looking forward to italy-paraguay this afternoon (go paraguay) and ivory coast-portugal tomorrow. Yeah, the announcer said that Eto'o was whistled for the foul, though they couldn't tell until after the play had stopped.
  15. Chip Brown really needs to stop using words like "committed." Don't blame Chip. The Texas AD tells him what to say. I'd have thought the string would have worn out by now.
  16. Sounds like an entertaining finish to this game. I'm only listening to it on ESPN Radio online, but what a win this could be for Japan. And congrats to Japan. First ever World Cup win outside of Japan.

  18. Joe Schad heard from 4 sources inside the Big 12 while Chip Brown heard from his usual source in the Texas athletic department. There's a decent chance it plays out that way, but I wouldn't believe anything just yet. Schad also said that Utah has a better shot than Kansas for that 16th spot in the Pac-10.
  19. The TV deal that Beebe is proposing is a long-term deal with Fox Sports Net. Obviously Texas would be okay since they'd also be able to create their own regional network as long as they don't start demanding national exposure, but I can't imagine that staying FSN would be attractive to anyone else. Another 15 years of only regional exposure isn't much of a plan. To me, this would just be a band-aid.
  20. Howard has been cleared to play Friday morning.
  21. If Texas was to join the Pac-10, it's quite possible that in the near future they could form their own version of the CIC, which would have huge financial and academic implications. There's no chance of that in the SEC.
  22. Joe Schad: If Chip Brown's latest report is "true" (in the sense that Texas said they would seriously consider staying in a 10 team conference) and A&M decides to bolt, Texas will have played this really well.
  23. Fantastic job by the Denmark defender to prevent a 3rd goal. Cleared it off the line while going at full speed only a couple of yards after the ball was kicked.
  24. Texas would want no part of the academic situation in the SEC.
  25. I don't have a ton going on at work this week, which sets up great for wasting more days following expansion talk. Except for an all-day commitment Wednesday. Bad timing there. Any Notre Dame fans know if there has been much talk on ND boards about the Big East breakup rule that was put into place in 2003? There's certainly no way Notre Dame sacrifices their other sports just to remain independent in football.
