  1. nickcafardo Nick Cafardo Source: Red Sox holding ground on compensation from Cubs for Theo Epstein. Still hopeful of resolution before WS
  2. Roto and everyone is running with Heymans story The Cubs are aiming to add current Padres GM Jed Hoyer to Theo Epstein's new front office. Hoyer is considering the offer, according to SI.com's Jon Heyman. It'd be odd for him to leave his post at the top of the San Diego organization, but if the money's right he might just embrace the challenge. Epstein is sure to have a star-studded group of executives around him no matter what.
  3. Now he just sent another tweet Jon Heyman @SI_JonHeyman Jon Heyman Hoyer may stay in sd. But sources say cubs interest real. Cubs also looking at byrnes/mcleod from sd. Story on http://si.com soon
  4. Theo should start this winter with a bang and sign Fielder and then Sabathia when he ops out of his contract. I think that'd be a little nice off-season. :D
  5. 100! Woohoo! That definetly deserves a beer to be drank
  6. They really have some assholes over there. How do you go from " Hey, Theo, feel free to explore other opportunities and be promoted, you did a lot for us, we appreciate it and you deserve it" to what we have now. If I was Theo, I would be real pissed and feel alienated and back stabbed. Plus the indirect shot they took at him about the Crawford contract on the radio. I can't imagine him being happy at all right now over there and dying to finally get over here.
  7. GO AWAY CARLOS..We want Fielder or Pujols! According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Carlos Pena thinks the hiring of Theo Epstein bodes well for his chances to return next season. "No doubt,’’ said Pena. "He is the type of person I definitely appreciate and a professional that I appreciate. Playing against him so many years, and playing for him briefly in 2006, I’ve got nothing but good things to say.’’ Pena hit just .225 in his only season as the Cubs’ first baseman but his 101 walks and .357 on-base percentage offer enough value that Chicago could consider bringing him back. His .486 career slugging and .838 OPS appear to fit the general mold that Epstein has targeted during his nine-year tenure with Boston.
  8. Just so our man Theo knows According to one National League executive, neither Albert Pujols nor Prince Fielder will sign for more than $200 million this offseason, and Fielder will sign for less than what Adrian Gonzalez signed for in Boston (eight-years, $154 million). The consensus is that Pujols will receive somewhere in the neighborhood of what he was reportedly offered from the Cardinals earlier this year despite his strong October. Fielder who is said to have turned down a $120 million, six-year offer that included a buyout from the Brewers, is also unlikely to see Adrian Gonzalez type money. Teams mentioned as possible landing spots included the Orioles, Blue Jays, Nationals, Cubs, Rangers, Giants, Dodgers, Angels and Mariners. Assuming Fielder is willing to DH, the Yankees could also be in the mix for his services.
  9. Yup. It's basically a " Well you wanna leave us? Were gonna make it as hard as it can be and a living hell for you if your gonna do this to us" type thing. They're basically holding him ransom.
  10. Roto David Kaplan of CSNChicago.com is reporting that negotiations between the Cubs and Red Sox have turned increasingly contentious and the two sides remain far apart on a compensation package that would allow Theo Epstein to accept his position as head of baseball operations with Chicago. "The Red Sox hold the cards here because they have their new GM in Ben Cherington and they control Theo for the next 12 months, said one baseball executive. "If they want they can force him to stay in Boston or on the sidelines for the next year." Epstein's reported interest in bringing some of his former assistants to Chicago is causing the Red Sox to seek more compensation than Cubs are willing to give up, and ownership appears content to make a point at the expense of Epstein. The Red Sox have stated on numerous occasions that they would prefer cash and that a major league player not be involved as part of their compensation package.
  11. Little more of what he said Red Sox owner John Henry, in an interview on CBS Radio, said that while CEO Larry Lucchino -- whose 10-year contract is up this year -- is expected to sign a multi-year extension this offseason. However, even though GM Theo Epstein remains in the employ of the Sox and Henry restated that he would want to retain him, he also acknowledged that the Sox are facing a "sad day" with the departures of both manager Terry Francona and Epstein. "There’s a prohibition against announcements being made during the postseason in baseball. It would be unfair of me to the Cubs, who I don’t care that much about, but certainly to the Red Sox, Theo and the people involved to comment on what’s going on until there’s something to announce," Henry said about where negotiations stand with the Cubs regarding Epstein, who has agreed to a five-year deal with Chicago. "As far as I know, he’s still involved.
  12. BOSTON -- Negotiations continued Friday between the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs for Theo Epstein's services, but Red Sox principal owner John Henry spoke as if the deal is done. "I would love to have Theo back," Henry said on 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston. "I would have loved for Theo to have been our general manager for the next 20 years. That was my hope. That would have been my hope. But you don't always get what you want. I did everything I could personally, and so did Tom and Larry, to make that happen. The fact is that being general manager in Boston, being manager in Boston, is a terrifically tough job." For the first time, Henry acknowledged that Epstein has spoken to another team, presumably the Cubs. But a few hurdles remain to Epstein going to Chicago. The Red Sox are taking a hard-line stance that Epstein not take any of his top aides with him, according to a team source.
  13. I wish this could all be finalized today so I can happily get plastered all weekend knowing the Theo deal is official.
  14. Im reading random boards to see if there's any info, this is from a reader and I have no idea how accurate this is The Red Sox are demanding P Trey McNutt and one other prospect and the Cubs are balking.
  15. Popped up on Roto also Red Sox owner John Henry said in an interview on CBS Radio that he "personally opposed" the signing of Carl Crawford but deferred to those in the team's baseball operations. "We had plenty of left-handed hitting," Henry said. "I don’t have to go into why. I’ll just tell you that at the time I opposed the deal, but I don’t meddle to the point of making decisions for our baseball team." It's quite a statement that the owner of a team didn't want one of his highest-paid employees and also could be interpreted as a jab at soon-to-be former GM Theo Epstein. Henry might have to have a conversation with Crawford now to smooth things over and hopefully kill any more additional bad PR that's come the team's way lately.
  16. Appearantley Henry is on the radio right now. I'm reading tidbits from pissed off people in Boston. John Henry is on 98.5 right now and just said he didn't support the signing of Carl Crawford. Also listening. John Henry and his pathetic co-owners are just trying to create smokescreens so the fans perceptions' will be that the problems are gone and they will go to Fenway and pay absurd prices to see a 3rd place time. That's why the put out the hit job on Tito. In fact, the problems are in the clubhouse in the form of entitled players signed long term who don't care about winning.
  17. Here's a poll on NESN.com from the fans What compensation should the Red Sox get from the Cubs for Theo Epstein? One major league-ready prospect 12.13% One major league-ready prospect, one top-level minor league prospect 44.31% Two top-level minor league prospects 22.28% Three top-level minor league prospects 10.15% Other (Specify in comments) 11.14%
  18. BOSTON -- Negotiations continued Friday between the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs for Theo Epstein's services, with the Red Sox taking a hard-line stance that their outgoing general manager will not be able to take any of his top aides with him, according to a team source. The source told ESPNBoston.com Friday that he would not be surprised if negotiations continue until Tuesday. http://espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/story/_/id/7101409/source-boston-red-sox-theo-epstein-taking-aides-chicago-cubs
  19. The Red Sox are pissing me off with this. It's like their holding him hostage. The guy agreed to a Cubs contract. Now they're being greedy and selfish wanting all top prospects for a guy who already agreed to terms. This compensation should just be courtesy and they should accept a couple average prospects or cash. Not try to friggin rob the farm that your GM that you supposedly highly respect and has done for you over the years is going over to.
  20. SI_JonHeyman Jon Heyman Sounds like theo may take 1 or 2 from bosox f. office/medical staff. But that may affect compensation package (minor leaguers)
  21. Oh boy Once Epstein is installed, the ''Hire Ryne Sandberg'' movement is bound to begin anew, and already may have begun. Smashing Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan, a noted Cubs fan, made a personal plea to Epstein Thursday on the "WGN Morning News." "Please, please hire Ryne Sandberg," Corgan said. "White Sox Nation followed Ozzie all those years. I think Cubs Nation will follow 'Ryno.'"
  22. Theo Epstein thought enough of Carlos Pena five years ago to sign him with the Red Sox organization. Does he think enough of Pena now to keep the pending free agent in a Cubs uniform next year? Pena, for one, thinks the hiring of Epstein as the Cubs’ next GM bodes well for his chances. “No doubt,’’ said Pena, who hit just .225 in his only season as the Cubs’ first baseman — but whose 101 walks, .357 on-base percentage and left-handed power provided unique value to a mostly free-swinging lineup. “He is the type of person I definitely appreciate and a professional that I appreciate,’’ added Pena, who played 11 games for Boston’s Class AAA team in August before finishing that 2006 season with the Red Sox. “Even playing against him so many years [for Tampa Bay in 2007-10], and playing for him briefly in 2006, I’ve got nothing but good things to say about Theo. “I’m excited. I’m excited about the ballclub.’’ http://www.suntimes.com/sports/8201957-419/pena-sold-on-theos-way-of-doing-things.html
  23. Couple small things from today Negotiations between the Cubs and Red Sox "are moving along at a snail's pace," according to Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago. "There's no such thing as a timetable for these transactions," but there doesn't appear to be anything major that would keep Epstein from eventually joining the Cubs. "The Red Sox like utilityman Jeff Baker," writes Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, though Baker alone wouldn't be suitable compensation. Cafardo says the Sox would also "love" to send John Lackey to the Cubs but unsurprisingly, "that is also a long shot." Cafardo lists a few of the Cubs' notable prospects who could conceivably go to the Sox, though I'd personally be surprised if Chicago would part with top minor leaguers like Brett Jackson or Matt Szczur. In addition to taking some Boston front office members with him to Chicago, Epstein may also take some of the Red Sox medical staff, tweets Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe. Mike Quade says he wasn't consulted about the Cubs' pursuit of Epstein, the incumbent manager tells ESPN Chicago, though he has no hard feelings about not being a part of the GM search.

  25. SkyNet, please If we do that, I hope we can replace Quade with this guy. I think he'd be a good skipper. http://www.internationalhero.co.uk/t/t1000rp.jpg
