  1. didn't hendry actually say he could have had a couple of high-level prospects for maddux, but chose izturis instead? if hendry actually did say that, then people have every right to criticize what he got in return. Yes, he said it when he was talking to Len and Bob during the game. If im the Dodgers, im not dealing 2 highly regarded prospects for a 40yr old pitcher. According to Hendry, he turned down two "top prospects" from the Dodgers when he realized that he could get Izturis. That is what he said on air with Len and Bob. So obviously Coletti was willing to trade those "top prospects" unless Hendry is lying. My guess is that it was two prospects, but not the actual top prospects that everyone has been salivating over. I wouldn't put it past Hendry to stretch the truth to make his move seem better. Sounds like he was just doing a sales pitch to me. On the other hand, if he really was offered two top prospects or Izturis, he'd be stupid to pick Izturis. Yep, like I said in a previous post. No way would the Dodgers deal 2 "highly regarded" prospects for a 40yr old pitcher. Im pretty sure Jim would make the best deal for trading Maddux. He stated this several times. Did you figure in Coletti's serious man-love for Maddux? I dont think Coletti was banking the rest of his season in a Maddux deal. If he was so desperate for Maddux, then why didnt this move get done weeks ago? I never said the highlighted portion. What I'm saying is that it has been reported that he wanted Maddux to be on the team for their playoff run. Buster Olney has said this. It is a known fact he loves Maddux. But, he would have never made the move if they were not making a playoff run. He did not make any deals before Friday's Betemit trade. So that is when his trading began. Personally, I think it was a dumb trade for Dodgers in terms of the acquisition but good in terms of losing the contract of Izturis.

  3. This is a good post. I am in line with you. Lets get behind Izturis now and give him an opportunity to suceed before we run him out of town The odds are stacked against him. He's doomed.

  6. Isn't this a good move? In the sense that if the Cubs do not make major acquistions in the off season then they will be a bad team just as they are this season. What is the odds that Hendry can obtain guys who can make an impact? Slim considering the FA market isn't great this off season. So let's say the Cubs are miserable again next season. If that happens then there is a chance Hendry will not be able to fulfill the second year of his contract extention. Heck, even if they were to let him stay on for the final year, could he turn the team around. Once again that might be a very difficult task considering where the Cubs are right now and the players Hendry seems to value. So one or two more season of misery and majority of the fans get what they want........Hendry gone.
  7. Now you're closer to Holywood, but yet far enough away. http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j163/Niner74/ToddWalkerJenniferAniston.jpg
  8. I believe that if he doesn't play well immediately, he will hear the crowd booing. Sort of like Jacque. Jacque was able to turn it around in May and curtail most of the booing, but Izturis isn't all of a sudden going to become a good hitter. IMO, I think he is doomed.
  9. Wow....Ryan Theriot pinch hitting. 2 outs in the 9th and he pinch hits.
  10. Its easy. 1) Defense is not our problem. 2) Maddux's contract was up after this year, so his millions come off the book, we could spend it somewhere else. 3) Izturis's contract is in the range of $4-5.5 million for the next two years for production (both defense and offense) that is the same as Cedeno's who would do it at a fraction the cost. edit: 4) we could have had one of Los Angeles's better prospects (who were cheap and have a WHOLE LOT more upside then Izturis) insted by most accounts. How the hell do we know that we could have had one of LAs better prospects? Just because somethings been reported doesen't make it the truth. Will Carroll is very reliable. But even if you don't want to believe we could have had Kemp or Guzman, please address the other 3 points. So if they are such great prospects and be can't misses, then do you really think Hendry would pass them up? I agree with point 1. Point 2. What was Maddux making this year, 9 million? So now there is 4.5 more to spend. Point 3. If we upgrade the outfield are Izturis and Cedeno going to hurt us offesively? 1. x 2. they paid the Dodgers $2 million, and they're taking on Izturis' contract, which is for about $1.5 million more this year, so their $4.5 million in savings is about $1 million after all that. Also, they're not going to apply that $1 million to next year anyway I'm sure, because they're the Trib. 3. Yes. They had to pay cash considerations in the Walker trade so they probably just attribute the money there.
  11. Your kidding me, right? He's hitting low 200s, not starting and makes 6 Mil +. Remember, it takes two to trade. It was rumored that a team looking for a little bit of power might be interested. Reportedly there were offers, but the Pirates were asking too much. Crazier things have been done before. The money was paid out by the Pirates and a team with more money that is not as miserable as the Pirates might take it on for the playoffs.
  12. yea, but speed kills dude. Ah, you just wish Minnesota kept him. Sour grapes!!! :P
  13. The Cubs may stink, but when it's all said and done they still have the best bullpen phones in the majors.
  14. sure, I don't really have a problem with it. especially when we're out of the playoff race. but it would be nice if he looked at other stats, too - like Jacque's splits against lefties, for example. I agree. Personally, I'd like to see Jones sit versus lefties and bring up Restovich to play RF versus those lefties. I think Restovich has earned the right to be brought up.
  15. Coming into tonight, Mabry had faced Webb 7 times and had five hits, including a HR and a double. Dusty does look at stats, but he doesn't look at sample sizes. In 7 atbats, it's possible that Mabry really hits Webb well, or it's possible that he just happened to get 5 hits. It might be worth the gamble there even if it is just 7ABs. If it works it works. Heck it's all a crap shoot with this Cub team.
  16. Well, if it's any consolation Glendon won't throw many pitches tonight and he'll be all rested for his start on Thursday.
  17. It's certainly possible. There are plenty of players who have struggled due to psychological issues. Chuck Knoblauch is the first one that I think of. Rick Ankiel is another. Steve Sax. Maybe Latroy Hawkins, although I sometimes wonder if we just expected him to be better than he really is. Was it Mackey Sasser who couldn't throw the ball back to the pitcher?
  18. He's having the 14th best season of all RF's in baseball. That's in the top half, but just barely. I'd be happy with his production if he were moved to CF (the position he played in the minors before moving to RF because of Torii Hunter), but the Cubs don't think outside the box. Jacque has outperformed my expectations. The 14th best RF is still an average RF. That does qualify as a major league hitter though. I should have said an above average hitter. I'm trying to figure this out. If a player is not above average offensively then he is not a "major league hitter"? Someone who would categorized as "average" would not be a major league hitter?
  19. DLEE will be a big league hitter when he returns, Pierre is a big leaguer. Jacques Jones doesn't qualify as a major league hitter?
  20. I wonder if Dusty helped nudge him toward Izturis the veteran.
  21. He needs some money. His duds are a bit dated. http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j163/Niner74/OzzieSmith.jpg
  22. Pierre and Neifi were joking around before the game and talking about today's Cub trades. Then they started talking about next year and Pierre said, "We might not be around next year." And then he started rolling around on the bench laughing.
