  1. Byrnes is crazy wearing those black sleeves today/tonight.
  2. Froeming barely moved to get a look at it. What a shock!
  3. Guy with a Cardinals' hat right behind home plate.
  4. Wow....Izturis almost took that out of the park.
  5. I'm guessing it will pick up a bit once the game starts since Izturis is playing and Hill is pitching.
  6. Izzy come. Izzy go?
  7. If Guzman was a possibility, then that would have been worth the gamble. He has the character issues, but he would come cheap and if the problems persisted he could have been shipped off in some capacity. But, it will be interesting to see Joel Guzman with the terrible trio in Tampa(Durham). That team might implode. My point just being that if it was Kemp or Guzman, Kemp is a greater prospect. Guzman too would have been a great pick up and I would be pissed that Hendry passed on him, just not as upset as Kemp. I also don't think Guzman's "character issues" are anywhere near as bad as those of Delmon Young, BJ Upton or Elijiah Dukes. Kid was just pissed off he got demoted to AAA and *might* have a questionable work ethic. The first part is very understandable. As I sit, I'm pissed the Cubs couldn't get Delwyn Young or Greg Miller, and instead got Izturis. But, if Cubs' fans don't like seeing Aramis not run to first then they would really hate seeing the way Guzman does it.
  8. Who ISN'T in sports journalism? Ugh. By saying idiot, I mean a real moron. So do I. There are intelligent writers. Downey happens to be a complete and utter moron. He sounds like a White Sox homer. What writers are you thinking of? Phil Rogers. Paul Sullivan. Mike Kiley. Rozner. etc. All morons. I can only think of two that I respect... Bruce Miles and Rob Neyer. Thanks for clearing that up. I was beginning to get my feelings hurt. In the shameless plug department, I'll direct you to today's Daily Herald, where in my Maddux trade story, I point out the red flags, and the term "on-base percentage" or OBP is mentioned early and often. Take a look at the game story, too, where I say that the Cubs just might want to look into this power thing. Bruce, Are you well-received in the Cubs' circles? Spouting off words such as on-base percentage is practically heresy.

  10. OMG STEVE STONE FOR GM~! HE TELLS IT LIKE IT IS, CURVEBALL OUTSIDE CORNER!! I was just throwing it out there. I never advocated Stone as GM. I've pointed to Hawk Harrelson's failed short tenure as GM of the Sox as a precursor to Stone becoming a GM(which he never will).
  11. Nothing like a loss in the sweltering heat. Fans at Wrigley are going to be miserable tomorrow.
  12. This is a good post. I am in line with you. Lets get behind Izturis now and give him an opportunity to suceed before we run him out of town I don't think there's anyone here who wants Izturis to fail. They just realize he isn't that good a player and that Hendry turned down "a package of top-level prospects" for Cesar. I hear ya. But let's atleast give Izzy a chance to succeed. We're not going anywhere this year right? let's just all sit back, and enjoy our new player. Let's see if he is healthy and he can put up #'s closer to his 2004 year. He is only 26. Now, both the Cubs and the Cards have an Izzy on their team.
  13. That's my point, other than Von Joshua who do you really trust to instill into these players how to play the game the right way? Besides that, I think Hendry believes, despite this year, that this is a team built to win now, and prospects won't help achieve that goal. It may be slanted logic, but it's just my opinion of what Jim's thought process is and was. And that is why people are enraged. They find it unfathomable that Hendry believes this team can win. I wonder what he sees that gives him that sense if this is the case. There are pieces(Lee, Z, Aram, Barrett) but far from enough.
  14. I'm a fan of Dusty's off the field tactics, but I think he has a large part in the injury problems of Wood and Prior, and I also don't understand why every substitution has to be a double switch...obviously I don't think his on field tactics are the best. With that said, I think his players play hard for him and maybe that's all you can ask from a manager. He's not my favorite, but he beats some of the alternatives. My main complaint with the Cubs organization is my lack of confidence in scouting and development. The fact that the Cubs haven't fielded a home-grown position player since the cold war says a lot to me. So here was an opportunity to get some groomed minor leaguers(from another system), but Hendry passed in favor of Izturis. He had good enough defense with Neifi if that is what he wanted. But, he chose another defensive MI and ignored offense which the Cubs severely lack. So people are angry with Hendry.
  15. There are not any other "kids" who are ready for the Bigs yet.... Williams as sucked at AAA Guzman has not been doing too well. and the Ryu guy has sucked too as far as i know. Who else is there that we saw in Sping Training???? no one. and theres not anyone who we didnt see in Spring Training that is blowing the minor leagues away.. so therefore there are no other kids to call up.dvdd127: If we are to get an ass-whuppon, would you rather have us get that whuppon w/ some unproductive veteren, or with some unproven kid?? I'll take the kid over the veteren in a season like this. I don't agree with you much, but I agree with you here. I want to see Guzman and Hill in the rotation for the rest of the season. Agreed.
  16. It's a waste when middle infield defense isn't the team's weakness. It's a waste when the biggest problem with the team is lack of offense, and they start counting on people with insanely bad offensive numbers. Just because the Dodgers felt that he was worth nearly 10M over 3 years does not make it a good contract. Somebody was foolish enough to give Neifi 2.5M. And what the hell does Beltre have to do with it? Izturis is being written off because of his history of inept offense. If I sucked at what I did and people at my new job knew it, they would have every right in the world to not be happy about bringing me on when other, better options may have been available. You're more than welcome to stop visiting this board if the comments are too much to take. Quite frankly, I could do without the whining. I really doubt Hendry is 'counting' on Izturis to carry the offense. Secondly, everyone on this board whines. Just because I have a different view than you doesn't mean I'm whining - come on now. DiamondMind, What do you like about the Cubs' current management (from Baker and the coaches and all the way up to the top)?
  17. Is there anything to that, or is it just a rumor? He stated it to Bob and Len during the game. He said "two top prospects".
  18. Im loving this. Your telling me you wouldnt sign Howry or Eyre? For the reason they have had arm injuries in the past? From one of his responses to you.......
  19. Remlinger had a shoulder injury when he signed with the Cubs. Hawkins pitched in a dome stadium. Much different pitching in doors than it is out doors. He did also pitch on the road at outdoor stadiums. I don't recall there being any problem in those games, overall.
  20. Oh, no way. I don't have a link handy, but someone used to have a quote in his sig from Eyre talking about how Eyre had established some ideal terms with his agent and Hendry's offer just blew those away. Heck! Eyre has an NTC. There are elite players without NTCs.
  21. so? why post if you feel that way. I think the Cubs got what they could for Walker, there was NO line waiting to get him for over a year. I like the Maddux deal too. Yeah, we get to waste another $4.5 million next year on Izturis. $4.5 for a GG defensive SS entering his prime is hardly a 'waste'. Don't forget that it's not just the Cubs, the Dodgers are the one that signed this contract and believed he would be worth it. You want a waste? Check out Adrian Beltre. I'm sick of the never ending sarcastic comments on this board. Izturis hasn't donned the blue pinstripes for a single AB and you're writing him off. How would you feel if you got hired for a new office job and the entire building assumed you were a moron before your first day? Ha! I get that every first day of the school year.
