  1. Why? The guy can rake. For 3 years? He's 36.
  2. I thought most defensive ratings were pretty much junk. Is that wrong?
  3. i would not miss any of those players. The point is, why buy at full price when you can pick it up discounted later? This is a poker game, and Hendry is gambling that he can get Peavy cheaper, and I imagine he's right.
  4. Wait. Aren't you the guy who advocates sliding headfirst, into first, because it's faster? I can't speak for him, but I believe that to be the case also. I just think the danger of injury outweights the small amount of time gained. But that argument has had its own thread, and lets not relive it here.
  5. There's a thread in the minor league forum on the Rule 5 draft. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=52101
  6. Agreed. I think Hendry calls his bluff too. Hendry doesn't need Peavy as much as Towers needs to get rid of him.
  7. That's not quite what Towers said. http://blogs.dailyherald.com/node/1077 He basically said if "progress" wasn't made by the end of the meetings, he'd have to stop the talks. There is nothing serious going on yet between these two teams. I'm blogging like a crazy man, if you want to stop by at the Daily Herald. I'll do the best I can to check in here. Thanks for checking in Bruce. As you can imagine, the interest here has built to a pretty high level...
  8. I don't want to waste your time with some wise crack about the Sox and their fans, whom I both respect. But... before contributing, I decided to google your name. http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/rwas/index.php?category=2&id=2242 So instead of contributing a story or making a stupid remark about the Sox, I declined to comment. Haha, go F yourself Dan. I don't care who he is, this is innappropriate for this board, and against member guidelines. Don't do it again.
  9. Odds that no one in that rotation both pitches 25 starts and has an ERA better than 3.6? You realize that everyone in that rotation made 25 starts last year, and only Zambrano and Lilly had an ERA higher than 3.6. Anything can happen, but I gotta think the odds that none of them meet both of those criteria are smaller than just about every other rotation in the league (assuming the Peavy deal happens of course).
  10. Len re-ups...Bob stays (bad for Bob, good for me...) I'm happy.
  11. Second time this year we've signed him...ha! And now...for a look back...a Chad Fox NSBB history tribute.... Cubs Recall Chad Fox - 5/2/08 Cubs Sign Chad Fox - 1/11/08 Chad Fox Files for free agency - 11/5/05 - I love the post..."I thought his career was over."
  12. Well, we did get rid of Wood. It wouldn't be the Cubs if we didn't have an oft-injured pitcher in both the bullpen and the rotation. Harden takes care of the rotation...now the bullpen is complete.
  13. Did I enter a time warp and end up in 2005?
  14. What, they were forcing that on him?
  15. Someone's mother was kidnapped in Venezuela in the last year or two...right? This is a terrible story. My sympathies to the Blanco family.
  16. The big blue train stuff was annoying and not funny.
  17. Well, Ricketts is a Cubs fan. So hopefully that means something. He recently met with Steve Stone to get some feedback I'm told. I'm glad that a potential Cubs owner is consulting a White Sox announcer. That's helpful. Say what you want about Stone but although he's a White Sox announcer, he's a Chicago baseball guy. Wasn't Steve Stone interested in buying the Cubs at one point? Yeah, I just don't want Stone in any decision making capacity for this team.

  19. I would, most likely, not be a good MLB GM. That is irrelevant. Jim Hendry is not good at his job. I don't know why I'm bothering to jump in on this but... 2 straight division championships. Is the WS the only measure of whether a GM is good or not? Are there 29 bad GM's every year? Hendry has made his share of mistakes, no question. I don't always agree with him (this being one of those times), but like you pointed out, we'd probably be bad GM's. And the moves he's made have gotten us in a position to win the last couple of years, and the future looks good. I'm not sure what more you want. Yeah yeah, WS... If you want to argue that he's not great at his job, I'd probably agree. But not good at his job? That's overstating.

  21. Completely disagree. The odds that he will have any sort of prolonged success as an amazing returner are extremely low. I think he's lost that step he had and he's not going to get it back. But he's shown enough in his 1.5 as a receiver to make me believe he can keep getting better, and he's going to have much more of an impact there than at returner. I just don't think he has the hands to be a good/great receiver. He might have lost a step, but that could have to do with his hip injury early in the season. I'm hopeful it returns. But even if it does, I don't see that making him some great receiver. In any case, I fear we've seen the best of Hester already... Regardless, he's not going to help the team more as strictly a returner. That's done. He's not a #1, but he could be a tremendous weapon if the Bears actually had a good WR on the other side, and an offensive line that could block for more than 2 seconds. Ok then...choose returning or WR...get him off doing both...:P I guess as a #2 WR he could be ok, but he's getting paid like a #1, isn't he?

  23. I don't have the energy for this to turn into another Roberts thread. I just don't.
  24. I know this isn't what the Bears want to do, especially with all the money they're paying him, but in the offseason, I'd like to abandon the Hester/WR experiment and go back to him being solely a return guy. Let him focus on that, and be the amazing player he can be back there. That on slant route notwithstanding, he's not been a good receiver, imo. He doesn't make anything beyond the routine catches. There were several last night where he had a chance to make a really good catch, and couldn't quite haul it in. The one where he did the slant route around the outside of the defender sticks in my mind. Al and John really gave the defender credit, but I thought Hester should've had it. It hit him right in the hands. I quit watching after the int/fumble/challenge, so I didn't see all the goryness. This is going to be a disappointing season even if we win the division. This team isn't good. It's very, very, mediocre, possibly even leaning to the bad side of mediocre.
  25. Hub Arkush is a buffoon. Their hearing was last Thursday. Every NFL "insider" was saying going into it that no one would be suspended before Week 14 because it's a unique case. I mean every Glazer, Mortenson, Clayton, King was saying this last week. It shouldn't be a surprise. Hub is just an idiot. Did he ask why the 3 players from the Saints haven't been suspended yet? Their appeal hearing was before the Williams'. It sounds like there's a decent chance they may all be let off the hook because there were some major discrepancies. The hearing lasted 12 hours and they had multiple doctors and trainers testify. The banned substance wasn't included as an ingredients and wasn't on the hotline that players are supposed to consult with. How is he a buffoon for saying it has been unusually long? It has been long. It's been far too long. Hub is a buffoon though...ya gotta give him that...even if it's not for this particular instance.
