Which is basically what goony said in the link I posted (that they should all be held to the same standard). as they should you rate them all as starting pitchers and hammel has been fine. He hasn't been dragging the team down with him. He's been better than essentially half the starting staffs in baseball. He would probably be good enough to make any pitching staff. If the Cubs could find 5 guys better than him I'd hardly miss him but they haven't and probably won't anytime soon. I'm not sure why this is so complicated. Rating him against only other #5 starters would be dumb. Well I agree that he's been fine...other than his recent struggles, he's had a solid, if unremarkable season. But there's no way that you can hold him to the same standards that you hold guys like Arrieta or Lester. Everybody and their brother has done a deep dive on "what's wrong with Arrieta" this season because he's not threatening to throw no-hitter's every single time out. When Hammel takes the mound, so long as we're in the game, that's really all we expect out of him. It's not so much that we hold Hammel to a lower expectation because he's a 5th starter...I expect that he'll be a competent starter. It's that we hold other pitchers to higher standards when they're considered a top of the rotation guy....a claim no one will make about Hammel.
