I just had a big argument/discussion with a co-worker. We were discussing Mcgwire's HOF chances vs Sammy's HOF chances. We weren't arguing stats, as we both agreed that stats would put both of them in the HOF. I argued that Sammy had a better chance for a number of reasons: 1) There has never been even the accusation that anyone has ever seen Sammy do any kind of steroid. Meanwhile, Canseco said in his book that he'd seen Mcgwire use them, as well as reports that a known steroid dealer said he'd seen Mcgwire use them as well. 2) Sammy is much easier for the media and baseball writers (who vote for the HOF) to get along with than the likes of Mcgwire and Bonds. 3) Sammy outright denied using steroids in the congressional hearings, while Mcgwire danced around his answers. 4) With Sammy coming back, he has a chance to repair some of his public perception by laying low, doing his job on a much less scrutinized team than either the Cubs or the Orioles. Also he delays any HOF vote. Time can only be his friend here.
