  1. Yeah, but Cordero will be a free agent after the year unless you picked up his $6 million option at the end of the season. Pretty costly price tag for a 4.81 ERA and 1.32 WHIP.
  2. I think its a great deal for the Rangers. Laynce Nix has pretty much washed up as a prospect and was struggling in AAA, Mench has been a disappointment and CoCo Cordero lost his closing job and has a $6 million option pickup in the offseason. And they got a very good AAA player in return in Nelson Cruz (and a PTBNL on the way). They got a .900 OPS corner outfielder for some throwaway pieces and didn't have to give up Danks or Diamond. Unless there are more trades to come, it looks like the Brewers sold low because Melvin has a bias towards some of his former Rangers prospects. They shouldn't have traded Carlos Lee without getting a top pitching prospect in return.
  3. He should be salivating over that SLG %, considering the A's are the worst in baseball. Which plays no small part as to why they're 28th in runs scored.
  4. Boy, would that ever be sweet if the bone didn't set properly because Hendry was convinced this team was one good run away from wildcard contention. This orgnization is beyond clueless. Please, somebody buy this organization and clean house. Bring some accountability back to this circus of carte-blanche.
  5. Yes, he was driven in on a lazy sac fly to RF that would have been meaningless had he not reached 3rd base thanks almost soley to Pierre's speed. Even if you don't want to credit Pierre for Lee's walk, Lee still advanced two more bases thanks to Pierre which he'll never be accredit for. This is why even top statisticians in the field can still only account for 60% of the game. And again, the situation you pointed out happens so rarely that its impact over the course of a season is practically nil. Really? A baserunner advancing because a baserunner ahead of him stole a base, advanced on a sac fly or stretched a basehit into another base with speed is a rare occurance in the game?
  6. And if you hate a player because of the contract he signed, Kerry Wood should be the most reviled Cub player in team history.
  7. And, back on topi,c I'm still not sure what trading Jacque Jones would accomplish. Given that we have no corner outfield prospcts, unless you're getting a corner outfield prospect in return who has starting caliber projection, you're just creating another hole on the team that will have to be filled in the offseason with a contract that will likely be even worse than Jones'.
  8. I don't think they've found a way to properly quantitate speed either. Just an example from earlier this season. Pierre was on 1st with 1 out and Lee is at the plate. The pitcher gets ahead of Lee 1-2 in the count. Concerned that a 1-2 count is a good count for Pierre to steal, the pitcher becomes distracted and starts throwing over to 1st repeatedly. The end result is that he ends up walking Lee. Now Pierre is at 2nd, Lee is at 1st with 1 out. Pierre immediate steals 3rd on a great jump, and a rushed catcher throws the ball over the 3rd baseman's head. Pierre easily trots in, and Lee advances from 1st to 3rd on the stolen base and the error. Lee scores on a lazy sac fly. In such a case, Pierre essentially "manufactured" two runs that inning. His and Lee's. He'll never be accredited with Lee's.
  9. Given Giles' is 35 years old, that's a heck of an assumption.
  10. Jones and RF is the least of our outfield concerns. The two other starting positions that are much, much bigger problems.
  11. Wanna bet that the Cubs are at or near the OBP cellar with Baker's replacement as well?
  12. I agree that I would rather take Schmidt than Zito, hoping Schmidt will basically take a similar contract to the one Maddux is leaving. Wood buyout + Maddux + Pierre = 24 million off the books. Im thinking that should be able to land us Schmidt and Carlos Lee. And even though I'm personally against it, you can probably throw in Walker's salary into the treasure fund too .. although that means you now have to look for a 2nd baseman.
  13. Yes, this should be Hendry's top priority ... getting rid of one of the few players who gives us + offensive production for his position. This needs to be addressed way before our outfield.
  14. Firing Dusty isn't going to improve anything. He's just going to be replaced by a retread "baseball man" like Jimmy Williams. Our minor league system is still atrocious when it comes to developing position players. Hendry is going to be given every opportunity to fulfill his 3 years from MacPhail. While I do think the team has the potential to be better, once Prior and Wood are taken out of the equation I don't think this is a base of talent for a contender. Its a very poorly put together ballclub, with not a lot of young talent coming on the way through the system. The only saving grace I can see for this franchise is new ownership. And I don't mean that as a cliched bash the Tribune, because I think for the past 4-5 years they provided the current brass the tools and payroll necessary to put a winner on the field. But they are almost too hands off and give MacPhail carte blanche. I know Mark Cuban is a pipe dream, but that is the type of ownership that the Cubs need. An owner who is involved in the the day to day operations and is every bit as much invested in winning as the profitability of the franchise.
  15. Now Pierre has passed Corey in OBP, steadily catching up on OPS, and just 1 behind on SB. Not to praise Pierre, but the Corey HOF enshrinement ceremony has been a bit premature to say the least.
  16. I don't think you can say he clearly regressed from last year, considering how small his sample from last year was. He never statistically projected to be a good offensive MLB player, and on the scouting side he's never been looked upon as a good prospect. Yes, some teams can get away with having all defense and no offense from the SS position, but those teams usually get production from their traditional positions, like LF, which the Cubs do not.
  17. I see him going back to his hometown and pitching for the Rangers. He'll be a big draw there, and since top of the line pitchers wont come there to pitch in that stadium and they have to take chances.
  18. I saw Jimmy Williams work up close and personal in Houston. He's basically Dusty without the charm or warmth. And I don't see Hendry hiring anything but a retread manager, as he'll be too risk averse to hand over the team to an unproven AAA manager like Shines when he's on the hotseat.
  19. I don't mind letting the kids play as long as people don't fool themselves into believing there is something there that really isn't because they want to believe it. Its not just the Red Sox. Any team that didn't have the worst corner OF situation in baseball wouldn't have Murton even platooning. I don't see why the Cubs would hire a OBP valuing manager when Hendry doesn't believe in aquiring OBP players. I think we're going to end up with Jimmy Williams, as sad as that may be.
  20. Before we elect Corey into the Hall, like we did Sisco last year, his numbers since June have been extremely unimpressive and trending downwards. So I wouldn't exactly proclaim that the Oriole coaches have "reached" him yet. Corey was always good for a hot month (except for the years that he wasn't), and I still wouldn't be a bit surprised if he finished the year with an sub .700 OPS and a sub .300 OBP. And the danger for the Orioles is that he teases them just enough with stats like SB to invest several more years in him. To which I say, better them than us. At least we'll be done with our dead weight CF at the end of the year.
  21. I think he probably goes back home to Arlington to play for the Rangers next year, but yeah ... he's probably done for. Its sad. He'll be an interesting bit of trivia for future generations when people talk about "the greatest game ever pitched".
  22. If Restovich is the promising prospect that Phil Nevin is supposedly blocking, that's a tellingly sad statement on our minor league's systems state of affairs in developing non-pitching talent.
  23. oh man that makes this deal even worse for the cubs hahaha, way to go hendry! ....as in the Rangers are giving the Cubs $3.5 million; picking up that part of Nevin's contract. i understand this. nevin is making ten million. we're still going to be paying him quite a bit. edit: we've played 51 games, which leaves 111 left in the season. so, 68.5% of the season remains - that means nevin is still due $6.85 million. deducting the $3.5 million we're getting from texas, that means we're paying him $3.35 million. And Hairston makes 2.3 this year, so factor in that the Cubs are moving 1.6 out of the current payroll. Considering the Cubs are much more likely be sellers than buyers as the trading deadline nears, I think an increase of 1.5 in salary on a contract that ends at the end of the year is splitting hairs.
  24. Reports out of Dallas radio says the Rangers are picking up 3.5 million of his remaining contract.
  25. The DMN article says the Rangers will pick up most of his salary and the Rangers are not expecting to obtain a valuable prospect. Basically they are just wanting to prevent an ugly situation in the lockerroom since he's lost his starting job. I'm not opposed to it. It would be one thing if he were actually blocking a potential MLB player currently laboring in the minors. Sadly, I'm afraid he's not.
