  1. Over/under on how long he stays in Ozzie's good graces? I give it maybe until the end of Spring Training. I bet he's with a new organization by July.
  2. More like trying to spin it to the fans so it sounds more tolerable. He knows how bad of an option it is. He just has such a limited imagination that he doesn't see any other alternatives.
  3. Not that I'm confirming the rumor, but I did find it strange a while back that both brothers took a gigantic power dip in the same season.
  4. Absolutely. Move Soriano to CF (where he actually has the most impact as a + player for his position), and Mench would make a phenomenal platoon partner for JJ in RF. Mench's 3 year average numbers against lefties. BA .307 OBP .379 SLG .590 OPS .969
  5. In the one in a million chance everyone is healthy, I see Miller becoming a great trade chip come July in which the Cubs will have gotten a pretty good return on such a minimal investment.
  6. I disagree ... I would have rather had Meche ... Marquis has at least had seasons where he put up numbers comparable to a decent to good starting MLB pitcher. The only impressive numbers Meche has ever put up was on a radar gun. Meche has never once been a league average pitcher in a season in which he pitched more than 85 innings. His BB numbers are not out of control. Its not like he hasn't learned to control or harness his stuff, its just that it doesn't fool anyone.
  7. I'll take Marquis 3/20 any day over Meche 4/40
  8. Between filling in at 1B, both corner OF spots, DH in intraleague and the first bat off the bench I think he'll get plenty of at bats.
  9. For the comparative price, I would rather have Marquis than Meche.
  10. Jones and Dempster make a lot of sense for the Dodgers. I think its going to take another prospect, and I'm not talking about someone of the Marshall variety. Probably more like one of the lower minor studs.
  11. If true, I think its a sign that Jacque will probably be moved in the very near future.
  12. Having to offer Suppan $10 million a year will do that to you.
  13. We're going to have to pray we get the needed innings out of Lilly and Meche too. Neither one have proven themselves to be dependable workhorses in their careers.
  14. Its always strikes me funny how some who most boldly promote objective analysis seem to be the ones who hold the most irrational personal grudges (JJ, Alou).
  15. Its quite humorous to read really. Marmol, Marshall, Guzman and Mateo will be battling to fill out MAYBE the 5th spot in the rotation of a club that is so desperate for pitching they need two pichers in a thin free agent market ... yet somehow to Cub fans they're all potential middle of the rotation pitchers (at least) and big time bargaining chips. If we're lucky, one of these guys steps up and becomes a servicable back end of the rotation starter. By the end of this spring traing, the remainders will have next to no value. What ones that do retain a smidgen of value will soon see it plummet as they're leapfrogged in the organization by Gallagher (and perhaps some other low level prospects). Its already a given that Guzman will have no value once he's injured again.
  16. I briefly caught the part at the end, but did he say that the Cubs were closing on Lilly as well?
  17. Lose, IMHO. But Hendry seems hellbent on trading him for whatever reason.
  18. I don't mind giving up Marmol. The Cubs need to start thinning out the log jam with Marmol, Mateo, Marshall and Guzman. Eventually some of these guys are going to get leapfrogged by Gallagher and lower level prospects and have absolutely no value.
  19. As someone who made his money in math/science, the first thing Cuban did when he bought the Mavs is hire a team of statisticians to revolutionize basketball stats. For example, every team charts 3 pt.%, but Cuban's statisticians broke down 3 pointers from the different areas behind the arc. They found that San Antonio shoots a very good overall 3 point percentage, but when they broke it down the Spurs shoot great from the corners and straight ahead, but shot 3 pointers poorly from the angles. So they started focusing on guarding the perimeter baseline and the top of the key, giving the Spurs the angle shots and the Spurs shot below their typical 3 pt. average in head to head matchups ever since.
  20. I would only be in favor of Lofton if it means Soriano is playing 2B.
  21. I thought the same thing when we let Moises walk, but evidently I was among the few.
  22. Its funny to me that Billy Beane seems much more interested in signing Piazza than signing Bonds. You would think Beane would be all over that obp, and the bay ara might be the only fanbase in the country that supports/likes him.
  23. 40 year old pitchers don't tend to improve. They tend to regress. And lifelong crappy pitchers like Lilly/Suppan tend to stay crappy. I love how people just throw around the name Westbrook like they know firsthand that he can be had because they read it on teh intratubes.
  24. its better than giving a 2 year deal to jason marquis Or giving a 4 year deal to Meche, Padilla or Lilly.
