    A sprain is not nessarily better than a break. I didn't say one was preferable. I just don't think he broke it.

    But OBP and SLG are much more telling about a guys production. I highly doubt he'll be able to outproduce everybody in the game hitting .250, but it could happen, and if he did, he'd be the best. You can't just dog on him for the AVG, when it's not as important as other things. But wouldn't you agree that if two players consistently had similar OBPs, the player who consistently has the higher BA is the better hitter? And probably more productive as well?

    Because, in my mind, you can't be the "best hitter in the game" if you don't at least have at least a near .300 batting average. I don't care if he has a .400 OBP and a .600 SLG, if he is batting .250 while he does it, he can't be the "best hitter in the game". It's counter-intuitive.

    I'm sorry. I respect your opinion and acknowledge Dunn to be a great player, but there is NO WAY IN THE WORLD that he ever becomes the "best hitter in the game". Not a chance.

    He is? Why? Because he hits more homers? They are very similar in their hitting capacity with Dunn having more pure power and Bay being able to hit at a higher clip. That doesn't even take into consideration Bay's large advantage in defense and speed.

    What in the world do you want Baker to say to the press about Jones? Baker isn't going to rip on Jones to the media.

    Pedro, while he does have wicked per inning numbers, loses points in my mind because he rarely went as deep into games as guys like Clemens, Maddux, Johnson, or Schilling did.

    Looking at the last three years, Guillen posted 295/349/515 line while Jones 268/322/443. I think that is quite a bit better. Furthermore, I don't think Guillen ever threw a chair at a fan. If you have a link, please provide, but you are confusing him with Cordero of the Rangers. Guillen has had some behavior issues, especially with the Angels. But please don't exaggerate or lie about him just to make a stronger point. To set things straight, it wasn't Francisco Cordero either. It was Frank Francisco. Also of the Rangers.

    I think you are forgetting the fact that if the Cubs offer Pierre arbitration and he leaves (cuz he wants to sign for more than a year), he would likely be considered a class A free agent and the Cubs would probably get a first round and maybe a sandwich pick for losing him. Those would likely be two pretty good prospects in return right there. And if the Cubs go the college route for them, they likely wouldn't be that far away either.

    On top of what has already been shown in this thread, I would also chime in that I remember seeing one ball he hit to left center in spring that almost left the yard that ended up a double. I then saw another in person against the Mariners where he hit a double the other way. Those were two of the at-bats where he impressed me the most--showing that opposite field power.

    They have a combined 14 at bats against Claussen, making a decision based on that is silly. You might make the case that Walker(recently) and Hairston don't have defined platoon splits, but Hairston hasn't started a game all year and now is a pretty decent chance to give him a look to make sure his bat stays sharp. Agreed. Hairston needs a chance to prove himself as a starter at some point early in the season. I'd still prefer Walker in the lineup. 2 HRs in 8 at bats is nothing to sneeze at. Plus, the Cubs are facing another lefty tomorrow that Hairston can start against.

    But if the Cubs can hold off in bringing up Pie until May 1 (I think), then that postpones his arbitration clock from starting and gives the Cubs control over him for another year. If he is really as good as thought to be, that is a pretty key consideration.

    If he has to miss a start or two, this is the best time to do so with two lefties coming up.

    Do we know for sure that Jaque's injury won't put him on the DL? If he does go on the 15-day, who gets brought up? Do they just get it all over with and bring up Pie. Or do they hold off on his arb clock and let him continue to develop in AAA and go with someone like Restovich or Sing instead?

    Nothing. But making fishing analogies when talking about baseball sure is. And why is that? Because the intent of his message is very clear without the fishing reference. It'd be just as dumb as if Dusty was a big fan of backgammon and threw in random backgammon references when talking about a player who is struggling. So, I take it you find most all analogies dumb?

    id be shocked if this ended up as a bargain. i think the best case scenario is it's a good deal at the beginning and then not horrible at the end but more than you'd like to pay. They most certainly got him at under what he would have commanded on the free agent market. That qualifies as a "bargain" to me.
