    hey it's late 2006 all over again! rich has good numbers because he's pitching against bad offenses! A 1.78 WHIP or whatever he had yesterday is not "good." He got very fortunate yesterday to not give up more runs than he did. He needs to start pitching ahead in the count more consistently if he wants to get back to the level the Cubs need him to be at.

    They will probably send Gallagher down because he went 4 yesterday and the rest of the bullpen is decently rested. I'm guessing the move is primarily to make sure they have another right handed bat while Lee serves his suspension. Then, when his suspension is over, Fox will go down and Dempster will come off the DL. Just my guess. **edit** Crap, UM beat me to it.

    He's a reliever now? I thought he a guy with ace potential at one point? He still does, but the Royals are idiots. Yes, please tell us about your inside knowledge of the Greinke situation and how the Royals are "idiots" in the matter. I'm not sure what I said that hurt your feelings, but it's a safe assumption that one of the more talented pitchers drafted in recent memory still has that talent at 23 given he's had no major surgeries. It's also a safe assumption that putting a pitcher with that much talent in the bullpen is idiotic. So, you are basically just choosing to ignore that Greinke has a 5.71 ERA in 34.2 innings as a starter this year and a 3.48 ERA in 38.2 innings of relief? In summation, the Royals finding the best role for him to help their team this year makes them idiotic? Interesting.

    Greinke is vastly overrated. His fastball is far to straight for him to have any long term success.

    I can't believe all of the bandwidth that was wasted on the DeRosa vs. Durham discussion. Even if the Cubs had targeted Durham over DeRosa, there's no saying he would have wanted to come to Chicago. This is real life with 31 other major league teams potentially in the mix and just because you want one guy over the other doesn't mean you are going to get that player. Durham had played in SF for the past few years and they gave him a nice contract, I'm guessing there's a fair chance he wasn't going to leave. Unless the Cubs gave him a much heavier contract than the Giants did. Then Cub fans would be upset over that.

    Nope - pretty much sucks against everyone. I edited my post to include how awful Pie is against lefties in the discussion. FYI. Really b/c now if I want to dispute that, I have to jump back 2 posts. Why didn't you just make a new post w/ those stats? Why do you care? Seriously. I had already made the edit by the time I saw your reply. Big deal. I was telling you out of courtesy.

    It's certainly not stupid to sit Pie for Pagan against lefties. Really? Pagan has a .742 OPS against LHP this year, right? and .596 against LHP last year, right? Pie may not match those #s, but frankly I don't care. In 50 ABs, Pagan has a .281 OBP against LHP. Whatever Pie's #s are, the difference between them and Pagan's #s is less significant than getting our best position prospect regular ABs. I don't want Pie to be in a platoon, I want him to play every day and see all pitchers and learn to hit them. If Lou isn't prepared to do that, we need to send him to AAA (which is probably dumb b/c our CFs are so bad, that we might as well let Pie learn at this level and take advantage of his great defense). So, to reiterate, playing Jones or Pagan over Pie is just stupid. Pagan is the option that's really stupid. You could make a case that Jones has to play to boost his trade value but Pagan is just a low-ceiling prospect with no trade value. Having Pie lose starts to Pagan is indefensible. I think I could make a pretty good case that sitting a player with a .277 OPS against lefties is good for the team. We are in a race for the playoffs after all.

    Hmmm...I misread Pagan's splits. For some reason, I thought Pagan was better from the right side than from the left. That said, Pie's OPS against lefties is .277. I repeat. 277!!!! Not OBP, OPS. I think it's safe to say that you are underselling the difference. I think Pie should be starting against righties, for sure, but I think it's quite silly to say it's stupid to sit him against lefties.

    The games played by Jones so far in those 185 at bats are a "sunk cost" so to speak. We would just need him to hit in the 825 range for the rest of the season, not hit high enough to bring his season average to that level (although that would be nice), for him to help the team. It's what he can do for the team from here on out that matters, wouldn't you agree?

    "certainly may"? Anyway, the way I see it is that the Cubs would try to put Hill through waivers before they would Bowen. Hopefully, they give that a shot in the next couple of weeks and bring up Soto.

    After pitching yesterday, he'll now miss the last four games before the all-star break and the first one after. Some punishment.

    Totally meaningless stat? Hardly. It's a good statistic for showing the percentage of time that a pitcher keeps his team in the game. While there are certainly outlying situations in which a start that qualifies as a QS might not be as good as an effort that does not, those situations do not completely invalidate the stat.

    True, but I'm guessing that's because the thread is in regard to 2007 free agents. Of course, that doesn't mean that potential trade targets can't be discussed either.
