  1. No, I don't expect Marte to do much this year. He's young and talented and might have 30 HR power eventually, but it's not there yet. He's never hit over 24 HRs on any level and did not have that great of a year last year in AAA and the majors. Honestly, he will be lucky to have 20 HRs this year.
  2. I, for one, was not poking fun at them. I know they have a lot of young talent...although I wouldn't expect much from Marte this year. Also, I wouldn't go so far as to call Ben Broussard "non-productive." My post was merely criticizing the assertion that they were the best team in that division last year. And FWIW, that rotation is not nearly as good as you make it out to be. It's closer to average than top of the line (like the 10-15 range by my quick estimation). Plus, I don't think their bullpen is any more than average, and not better than the Twins' or Tigers'.
  3. That's the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Seconded. Well, maybe not the most ridiculous, but it's up there. The Indians finished in fourth place and 18 games out of first, yet they were the best team in the division. Good stuff. Based on run differential they were much better than their record indicates. Maybe not the best, but definitely better than a 4th place team. They were real unlucky. Or maybe they don't have any mental toughness and lost a lot of close games for that reason. Who knows. It's still a ridiculous statement to say they were the best team in that division. Silly wins, like they have anything to do with the question.

  5. Actually, he probably is. PECOTA is projecting about a half run of ERA in Ryu's favor. CHONE predicts nearly an earned run Ryu's favor and ZiPS favors Ryu as well, although Dan sees them being pretty close. I keep forgetting to use ZiPS and CHONE when I make points about pitching. PECOTA may as well be the definitive source on projections for hitters... but its pitching lags behind (due to the very unpredictable nature of pitching itself). I will go out on a limb and say that all three will be wrong and Marquis will be about a run better than Ryu.
  6. X 100 I guess I don't see anything wrong with his statement. It's true.
  7. Weaver is more than a prospect, though. So is Kendrick.
  8. I guess when I said there was some overvaluing going on, I was referring to Tim's statement in the other thread that the negotiations wouldn't start for him until Weaver, Kendrick, and Adenhart were on the table. I think that would be viewed as an unreasonable request by the Angels.
  9. That's not a flaw. In fact the situations are perfectly analogous. The only reason the Cubs would deal Zambrano is if they can't (or won't) pay Z what he is going to demand as a FA. At that point, their choice is between taking the players he could be traded for, or taking the draft picks when he leaves. Same exact choice the Royals had with Beltran. Another good comparison is the Randy Johnson for Freddy Garcia, John Halama, and Carlos Guillen trade. And Johnson was notably better then than Z is now. I think some people here are overvaluing what Z should fetch on the trade market. Like I said in that other thread, I would be ecstatic with Jared Weaver and Howie Kendrick...although that is purely speculation on his potential value.
  10. But why would Z sign a 3 or 4 year deal for 14M per?
  11. Not necessarily. If they got Weaver and Kendrick in return for him, they could be just as good, and possibly better.
  12. prospects that may never amount to nothing So...that's something, right?
  13. Either way, it reminds me of the way they treated Giardi before forcing him out... Why is Cabrera the victim here? He's acting like what he is...an overgrown baby.
  14. There's just no way you get that much for Z when he is a budding (and likely VERY costly) free agent. I would do it for Weaver and Kendrick alone.
  15. Why not? DJ isn't very good.
  16. Just be wary that it has been rather unreliable on draft-day the last couple years. This year it was so bad in football that they offered leagues a 50% discount on next year's fee.
  17. In an unrelated note, I think that Brenly lives in my girlfriend's apartment complex during the season. I've seen him there like three times.
  18. Not to take anything away from any other posters here, but I just wanted to thank CubsWin for his contributions to this board. His posts always seem to be especially well thought out, well-reasoned, level-headed, and fair.
  19. If so, then those human beings are not looking at the big picture in that they are ignoring the huge benefit afforded to them by the time value of money in such a structure.
  20. I would be shocked if they gave Prior more than 1 year at this point. There's no reason to offer it, unless he's willing to take peanuts in the 2nd year. I could see him getting a 2nd year, but that's it. But why would he sign to it?
  21. Derek Lee. Thanks for the link to that mock draft page; it's pretty useful. I had seen sportsline's already, but yours seems a little better. As for trading Atkins to a team in contention, I'm not worried about this team. The guy runs the league, but hasn't finished all that well lately, although he did finish third last year. He lost Liriano, who was responsible for a lot of his team's success last year, and I don't see many other studs on his team. Maybe Brandon Webb, but not much else.
  22. No, we don't have a corner infield slot, but we do have two DH/Utility slots that you can fill with anyone. I already have Howard in one of those slots and I'm not all that excited about filling both spots before the draft. I like to keep at least one of them and grab a hitter late who has slipped through the cracks (that's how I got Atkins last year...with my 17th round pick).
  23. It's a little hard to explain. We draft 35 players. If you DRAFT somebody in the top 20 slots, then you have to keep them as a top 6 guy. If you draft a player in the last 15 slots (what we call "the minors"), then you can keep him down there the next year if you want...you can keep up to six guys in your minors. Then, if you've kept a player in the minors for a year, the following year you can keep him at the end of your top 20--those 18, 19, or 20 slots. Obviously, this is limited to three players. Howard was drafted in the minors two years ago and last year I kept him in the minors. This year, I have to "bring him up", but can still keep him at the end of my top 20. I hope that all makes sense. I've won this league for three years in row and think the real key is acquiring good talent (albeit usually short term) in those 18, 19, and 20 slots because, while everyone else is drafting third tier players there, you have good quality. It's much more of a sacrifice to keep a top six player or a guy in your minors because, to do so, you are giving up on the opportunity of drafting somebody very worthwhile. That doesn't occur so much at those 18-20 slots. That all said, my team is looking pretty stacked again for this year (even though I made an ill-advised trade of Soriano for Harden last year): Top six keepers: Vlad Guerrero, Lance Berkman, Jose Reyes, Aramis Ramirez, Derek Lee and (probably) Ben Sheets. Could also keep Harden, Atkins, Bonderman, Bedard, or Smotlz. I had Verlander, but traded him for Aramis. 18, 19, 20: Just Howard and Street for now. Minors: Rocco Baldelli, Jared Weaver, Howie Kendrick, Stephen Drew, Carlos Quentin, and Mike Gonzalez. That's kind of why I want Gordon. If I get him, I can pretty much ignore all positions except starting pitching for my first five draft picks or so. And I need a lot of help at SP--Sheets and Weaver won't be enough.
