  3. Wow. You're not biased or anything. I mean, it's not like he won a World Series.
  4. I looked elsewhere and didn't see it. You guys must be fast.
  5. I live in Peoria myself, and I'm THRILLED!!! LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Ryne Sandberg apparently is serious about being a manager. Sandberg was named Tuesday as the manager for the Cubs' Class A Peoria Chiefs. Sandberg follows his former Cubs teammate Jody Davis, who managed the Chiefs for one season and was assigned to the Class A Daytona team for 2007. Sandberg was a late candidate for the Cubs' vacancy and interviewed with general manager Jim Hendry after the team decided not to renew Dusty Baker's contract. Hendry told the Hall of Fame second baseman that he was looking for someone with more managing experience, and the Cubs named Lou Piniella in October. At that time, Sandberg said he had been considering getting back into baseball. "It's something I've been thinking about quite a bit," he told the Chicago Sun-Times in October. "I'm at a stage in my life where that is something I want to do." Sun Times
  6. Hey, it's not my story. Tell Chris De Luca.
  7. 'Jacque Jones to anywhere, from what I'm hearing,'' one general manager said of the veteran's possible destinations during Day 1 of the winter meetings on Monday. The Cubs are interested in veteran outfielder Cliff Floyd and appear inclined to use infielder Ryan Theriot more in the outfield. Sun Times
  8. Here's to a speedy comeback :D
  9. Zito scares me. Zito coming to the NL Central which is basically 90% RH bats really really scares me. Besides, we already have the next Zito.
  10. His numbers will probably improve coming to the NL. His cost to aquire is a lot more palatable than paying Gil Meche or Greg Maddux. Yea, coming to the NL will help, but you never know - I don't think that's a variable you can count on to come true. Secondly, I would actually rather pay/overpay to acquire Meche. In the playoffs, Westbrook's stuff wont win you a game, neither will Maddux' - at least with Meche you have a chance.
  11. Westbrook is like a C+ pitcher to me. 1.43 WHIP? Yuck. What's everyone so excited about?
  12. CF is the easiest of the OF positions to play. You're always going to see 2 things: the direct path/flight of the ball, and where the catcher is setting up to receive the pitch. You also (generally) are dealing with less annoyances like the sun, or wind tunnels.
  13. Offensively speaking at least, Hall is so underrated. No one knows he exists. I don't know anything about his D, wasn't he a utility guy before he forced them to play him over JJ Hardy?
  14. What would it take? An apology.
  15. Good for Jacque! Incredibly nice thing to do.
  16. I hope I never have to hear those two words in connection with a Cubs managerial move ever again. I'm not saying I like the idea, or even that I like Counsell...just that I like Counsell better than Bynum as a player...(there is an argument for Bynum that he's faster so if we need a base swiped, or a runner to advance on a sac fly, or score on a single from 2nd late in the game he'd be better, and he'll likely be cheaper, but that doesnt' seem to matter much anymore). That being said, I don't love either option. Last year Bynum had an OPS+ of 90, Counsell was 69. So? Tell me why YOU prefer Bynum.
  17. If he's truly going to be used as the final bench player, I'll take Freddie and the extra million dollars, please. They both suck. You're killing me Smalls!! Honestly, as a cubs fan, how can you cry over one million dollars that isn't your money? I hope you're joking. Counsell sucks much, much, much less than Bynum - oh, and he's won a ring.
  18. Another perspective is that forgetting about 2007 and reloading for 2008 is increasingly looking like it would have been the smart thing to do. We could have sat on the sidelines watching the desperate win-now teams saddle themselves with these crippling albatross contracts. WE LAST WON IN 1908.
  19. To all the people griping about DeRosa's deal relative to the current market: I TOLD YOU SO
  20. He's not going to make much of a fashion statement in those terrible softball-league Jays jerseys.
  21. He's obviously setting himself up to replace Torre, eventually.
  22. I agree with the sentiment, but what other role was he going to get elsewhere. I thought that medically, Wood had made the decision to be a reliever. I really think he could have gotten up to 5-7MM from other teams, with a chance to enter ST as a starter, or a guaranteed chance at closing. The market for pitchers is ridiculous. And besides any of that, it's obvious that Wood specifically prefers the city of Chicago and its' fans.
  23. Here's to an amazing 2007 season for Kid K. As Buster Olney explained in a column today, things certainly have not gone according to plan for Wood - but his commitment to the Cubs, and the city of Chicago is unbreakable. Wood showed the fans something - loyalty. He could have made more elsewhere, and in a better role promised to him than a middle reliever. I don't need to see the 20 strike out days return - an effective, happy, entertaining #34 is all I need. And isn't that what we ALL need for 2007? Something to be proud of and to be happy about? Good luck in 2007 Kerry, glad to have ya' back.
