The first 2 sentences don't seem to go together. If he's their only good pitcher how exactly do you think they will contend? On the question at hand, though. I wouldn't want to take the risk on him. Unless the Cubs are looking to fill Prior's DL spot there's really no reason.

I don't see the problem with replacing an injured player as long as you make room on your roster. The problem would be if someone put a day to day player on the DL when he's not officially on the DL yet. But if you drop a player in order to pick up a FA there shouldn't be a problem.

Honestly at this point it would not surprise me to see the Bears take Mendenhall in the 1st or an OT. I've also heard more then one analyst talk about the possibility of the Bears trading up to get McFadden. Although, that would probably surprise me quite a bit.
