  1. Blah, obviously I'm on the other side of the emotional scale than you, but I can totally understand the pain that you are feeling Luckily I'm not a Cubs hater, if the Brewers or Pirates aren't going to win the division I'd rather see the Cubs do it than the other teams.
  2. As a Brewer fan there is nothing more deflating than losing a game to Wes "Krispy Kreme" Helms.
  3. They have 13 pitchers right now so Parra will likely pitch for 4 innings or so, he's a good hitter so he can hit for himself.
  4. The TV announcers are pretty terrible, I love the radio guys though. Nobody is worse than the White Sox announcers though~
  5. They wanted a righty vs righty matchup. Pretty sure the Phillies are low on position players since Roberson PR for Burrell, Helms PH for Dobbs and Victorino and Bourne were hurt vs Cubs. gameday seems to say they don't have anyone on the bench but I assume they at least have a C or two.
  6. Fixed it to be a bit more detailed. Cordero threw 40 pitches with at least half of them balls.
  7. Phillies with a 5 run 9th, tie game 6-6.
  8. They have been outscored 61-41 in their past 6 games giving up an average of over 10 runs per game.
  9. I couldn't agree more with the original post. The Cubs had a great June and a very luck July, there is no reason to point to any one event that caused that. I'll also say I strongly disagree with the game being 90% mental, at least 10% of the game is simply luck, variance, whatever you want to call it and at least another 50% is talent. I'll grant you at most 40% is mental.
  10. Shelton looked like ARod for a month last year too, I wouldnt' judge a player by a two week sample of stats. Kendall is still a weak hitting catcher who can't throw guys out, eventually his stats will show that. He supposedly calls a good game so at least he has that going for him.
  11. Cobb would have told you that his seeming lack of power was because he didn't want to hit home runs. He thought it was a coward's way to score runs. To prove that point to the media, when he was 38 and playing against Ruth's Yankees near the end of his career, he hit 5 home runs in 2 days. Although it would be silly to try and say that Cobb or any other person back then had the power swing that Ruth had. Thats what Suzuki says too, of course he couldn't hit 40 HR's like he seems to think he could, its pretty easy to make bold statements when you don't even try to back them up.
  12. Prior, Zambrano, Clement, and Estes. The first 4 starters were the reason the Cubs got in to the playoffs for the most part. Prior was 3rd in the NL in ERA, Zambrano was 7th, Wood was 8th, and Clement was 27th. interesting, the Cubs really did get screwed by the Wood/Prior injury train and well by Clement sucking so much all of a sudden. I blame the Cardinals, the entire universe seems to be in their favor.
  13. Wow, that team really doesn't seem very good. Who were the other SP?
  14. Fred wasnt being serious. Oops sorry, missed the sarcasm.
  15. Zambrano has never had more than 2 straight months of domination in his entire career, my guess and hope (as a Brewer fan) is that he's about due for an off month. In July he was by far the best pitcher in baseball though, so its going to be hard to follow up with an even better month regardless of what happens.
  16. If you really don't think pitchers throw harder today you are living in a dream land, there is no question about it. They also throw a lot more breaking stuff, fastball/changeup was the name of the game back in the day, there was nowhere near the amount of nasty sliders etc. Your average hitter in the 50's/60's would be a scrub nowadays assuming you didn't get them the same access to film, weight lifting etc as players get now. the game is very very different.
  17. Worst pitcher ??? Come on now. You could argue that he's our BEST pitcher !!! CUBS are 14-10 when Zambrano starts CUBS are 13-10 when Lilly starts CUBS are 14-8 when Marquis starts CUBS are 9-12 when Hill starts CUBS are 0-3 when Miller starts CUBS are 1-2 when Guzman starts CUBS are 7-6 when Marshall starts As far as Glavine goes...... how'd the last pitcher that came into our house trying for his 300th win do ??? Go CUBS !!! :bluekoolaid: Brewers almost always win when vargas starts, doesn't make him their best pitcher either. W/L record is about the 15th best stat to judge a pitcher by.
  18. You mean Bonds and not Selig right? I think the majority of baseball fans outside SF just don't care.
  19. Brewers go on the road in a couple days so I doubt it. Cordero has also been all over the place lately so I wouldn't count this game over just yet.
  20. The BB's are more a product of the minor league quality lineup(made up of old guys of course) the Giants put on the field than Barry himself nowadays though.
  21. A lot of people think Yost is terrible at in game managing especially his bullpen usage, haven't really seen anyone complain about his player managing.
  22. See, Brewers get in a fight and less than 24 hours later they are back in 1st place (at least until they play tonight!). These dugout scraps always work out.
  23. Since June 1st Howry has 28 IP, 3.21 ERA, 4 BB, 29 K and a .595 OPS against. Seems like kind of an odd choice of players to DFA.
  24. I seem to remember this same argument came up on whether or not the Rockies were hot before the Cubs faced them. They had a great month but had just been swept in a series so some people thought they were still hot and others thought they weren't. Seemed like sort of an odd thing to argue over that time too but in the end it turned out they weren't hot anymore for what its worth!
  25. 1.8*OBP + SLG is a lot more accurate than OBP+SLG, so obviously an OBP driven one is better. There really isn't room for discussion. Anyone who knows anything that uses OPS as a starting point will agree with this assessment. Like I said, carry on. There's no way to argue for SLG. somebody needs to give this stat a name and normalize it w.r.t. park effects and era. That could be the new convenient wonder-stat that's really better than OPS+. EqA is about the closest I've seen to a wonder stat, it even includes SB. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=2596
