  1. It's true. I've heard the same stories from people involved. This is the biggest reason why it's important to keep scum bags like Pete Rose out of sports. It's not as simple as throwing games and whatnot, it's the deep doodoo you can get into with the people taking your bets.
  2. The DUI's don't really have anything to do with them making millions. It's the drug dealing that gets me. I can somewhat see why a person with nothing, and no means for upward mobility, would get into the drug business game. It's their only chance to make millions. I can't understand why a player wouldn't at least wait until after his career to dabble in such a career. The risk to your legit income is just way too high. To me it does. Why drive your car when you are making millions when it is so easy for you to hire a personal driver? Drive your car when you are not drinking but if yo know you will be drinking that find other means of transportation. I'm not saying it's not stupid. I just think there's a difference. When you say "It's not enough they make millions", that to me is the argument against dealing drugs.
  3. I think it was Manny Alexander's bat boy.
  4. Boone, Scott, Idonije and Garay. At this point, Tank was no better than 3rd best of the remaining tackles. The biggest problem here is depth. It's too bad Dusty is the IR.

  6. Where are you getting this info? http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/custom/newsroom/chi-061214tank,0,6336443.story?coll=chi-newsbreaking-hed Gurnee police executed a search warrant Thursday at the home of Chicago Bears defensive tackle Terry "Tank" Johnson in what sources described as an apparent drug raid. Johnson, a third-year Bear who has had two previous run-ins with the law since joining the NFL team, apparently was not home when Gurnee police executed a search warrant shortly before 11 a.m. in the 400 block of Delany Road in the far north suburb.
  7. tank has had his problems in the past
  8. On the other hand, the NL is pretty weak. And I would probably expect a little more out of ARam and Murton. I don't think it's that far fetched (nor would the pitching have to be that dominant) for this team to contend in the NL. The pitching would have to dominate for that to be a 90 win team. If winning 82 games keep you in contention, then maybe they can get by with less than dominant performances on the mound.
  9. Looks a lot like Detroit last year, and will probably require similarly dominating pitching to be a good team.
  10. This team does not need drama right now.
  11. Yes, but that's quite different than next great thing.
  12. Yeah, but the eternal optimist in me says that one or two prospects will break out because of all the high ceilings. That's been this regime's theory for quite a while. It worked with the pitchers, not so much with the bats.
  13. I don't remember many people who thought Cedeno was ever the next great thing.
  14. And then we would have had about 100 pages on what a jerk Hendry is for letting someone outbid him on Soriano. I'm not happy about the contract, but Hendry (and Piniella) decided he was the man that they needed and he went out and got him. It certainly doesn't look like the money has hindered him from signing other players. Low OBP, high SLG. OBP isn't everything. It's all about how many runs Soriano creates, both by driving guys in and being driven in. Typical leadoff hitters are next to worthless getting guys in. That's a huge waste of baserunners. Soriano is much better than some punching Judy who can get on base at a .360+ clip. OBP is everything when it comes to the Cubs problems.
  15. If they were healthy they should bump Marquis, the worst of the group, from the rotation. But that won't happen. exactly that would be the logical move but it wont happen so would a 6 man rotation throw off all the pitchers rythem and preparations to much to go with it? Oh, I should have added, yes, a 6 man rotation would be bad. I wouldn't want guys with control issues (pretty much all of them) changing their routines and risking further problems. Zambrano on 5 days rest doesn't excite me. If you did something crazy, like pair Hill with Miller and try to get 5 out of the starter and 4 out of the 2nd guy, then maybe you could. But I think that would be hard to get right.

  17. Omniscient Peruvian? Ominous parable? Overweight priest? Obnoxious pric...............?
  18. People are wasting their time talking about this shortstop thing and Giles. The Cubs, whether you like it or not, are happy with Izturis and are not looking for a shortstop. They signed DeRosa for three years to be their second baseman. They are not going to sign Giles. I definitely don't like it even though what you are saying is true. It just goes to show you with all the money spent on this team we will be lucky to make the playoffs. isnt it ridiculous how much medicrity costs these days- a quarter of a billion for a third place team- Payroll jumping to 250 million!! Now we're really talking. Quarter Million spent this offseason, but I'm sure you knew that. I'm not a big fan of the "quarter billion spent this offseason" rhetoric. It distorts the truth. They didn't spend $250 million this offseason. They committed to spend that much over the next 8 years. And the way they backloaded the deals, they haven't spent nearly as much for this upcoming season as it seems.
  19. They just cleared 2 spots to get down to 37, and should not be able to fit Lilly, Marquis and Ward without making a move.
  20. I think we need another backup middle infielder more. Right now the team has one backup that can play both MI slots, one guy that can back up all the outfield spots, one guy that can back up the corner OF and first base, and a backup catcher. 3B is covered with our starting second baseman, but we still need a second backup middle infielder that can make sure that we have at least one left on the bench on the days when DeRosa plays 3rd. If we could get somebody that could back up 2nd, SS, and 3rd though, that would be very good. The Cubs have DeRosa, Izturis, Theriot and Cedeno. You aren't going to get a backup MI who is worth a dime. The Cubs need offense, not more guys who can backup SS.
  21. Why exactly is Hendry so enamored with him? That's what I don't understand. Izturis is just another in a long line of slick fielding/no hit SS's who come and go in this league, and are soon forgotten. Hendry likes him because he likes that long line of slick field SS. He has acquired about 30% of those that have been in baseball at one point or another during his regime. His love for Izturis is because of his defensive reputation and the fact that he doesn't strike out. Hendry values the ability to make outs when putting the ball in play. Over 162 games, Izturis will probably strike out less than 75 times. That's not Juan Pierre, or even Ichiro, but it's low. It's lower than guys like Royce Clayton. Hendry is also the type of guy that will judge a player on what he has done at his peak, and just assume that's what he'll do as a Cub. And at his peak Izturis hit a lot of singles and had an acceptable average.
  22. People are wasting their time talking about this shortstop thing and Giles. The Cubs, whether you like it or not, are happy with Izturis and are not looking for a shortstop. They signed DeRosa for three years to be their second baseman. They are not going to sign Giles. I know that. I believe that. I completely understand this to be true. But I'm still hoping it's not.
  23. They all received similar support, on average. They were each around the 5 run per 9 mark, about 40-50 on the list for each of those years, with the big outliers being Schmidt in 2006, at just 4.18 and 75th on the list, and Marquis in 2004, at 5.95 and 22nd on the list. Without looking further, I'd estimate that Marquis probably average the most run support of the group, with Zito 2nd and Schmidt last, but not by a huge margin.
  24. .276 .366 .526 .247 .306 .394 I wouldn't hire you to be a GM. I wouldn't want to be a GM :D Watch how fast everyone sours on Church if he is traded for. Doesn't it sound odd that a team that needs good OF'ers is looking to deal Church, even before the acquired Snell...... My point about Jones is that for every plus, Church makes some bonehead moves in the outfield and on the bases.... And what about the point about Pagan? He's much worse and can't even be considered a 4th OF.
