  1. What are PrOPS? Anything that says Blanco was unlucky last year immediately stands out as a questionable tool to measure luck. Putting our hopes for the future on changing luck is a surefire way to end up disappointed.
  2. Putting Izturis there would be very close to the same thing as what happened with Neifi and others there.
  3. Add that to the apparant rule that made Worrell's risky move to go after the ball just as the opposition was about to down a punt not as risky as I thought, and you've got a couple situations where I was screaming at the TV only to realize I was wrong and the player was not as dumb as I thought.
  4. Being at the in-laws, this could be a tough week for me seeing the game. It's going to be tough to talk my way into a sports bar on Christmas Eve.
  5. Actually, the theory is lineup protection, when the facts have indicated that it really makes no difference.
  6. I have no problem saying that Hendry and Baker did not to help in his development. The way they utilized him was asinine.
  7. There's no reason why the 2 hitter should be doing any of those things to move along a guy who is being paid a ton of money in part due to his SB ability. I don't want Lee and Ramirez wasted, again, due to crap OBP at the top of the order.
  8. I think they'll definitely get less than optimal OBP from Soriano leading-off, but it could still be decent. The Cubs got 732 PA out of the 2 hole last year, 630 out of the 8 hole. Giving Izturis a shot at an extra 100 PA would be a terrible decision. And it would virtually guarantee decreased RBI numbers out of Lee and Ramirez.
  9. So do I and all the options are bad except finding a CFer or keeping JJ. Keeping Jones and playing him in CF is not a bad option. It's a mediocre option, but not bad. I think that's what he was saying, the options are bad except .... keeping JJ. I think the bad options are using DeRosa in the OF and playing Theriot everyday, or starting Pie. Jones in CF is the best realistic option at this point, unless some trade target becomes available. I would have liked to have seen Jones/DeRosa platoon in Right, Soriano Center, and Marcus Giles at 2b. At least then Izturis in the 8 spot would be our only completely useless hitter. I'd be cool with a Jones/DeRosa platoon. I was thinking this story was referring to DeRosa being more of a regular out there though.
  10. Isn't he a MacPhail guy? He played under MacPhail in Minnesota. Not sure how much of a disciple he is in terms of front office work.
  11. I just don't want to hear any Dusty-like comments that everybody has a clean slate and he needs to see what these guys will do for him before making any decisions. There is enough evidence out there to come to conclusions about these guys long before April. Lou doesn't need to see Izturis fail mightily for 3 months to realize he shouldn't be hitting near the top of the lineup.
  12. I really hope he's not the Cubs starting CF. The Cubs can't afford anymore potential black hole spots in the lineup. I think the Cubs are going to wait until somebody makes a decent offer for Jones. That might not be until spring training. I've posted before that Hendry has made so many moves that we go crazy because he doesn't make one for a week or two. I do think he will trade Jones, but he's not going to give him away for nothing. As many posters have written, Jones in CF is not perfect, but it's not a disaster either. I'm not worried about whether it happens today or in March. I'm just saying Hendry has to get some production out of CF, or he has to improve another position significantly. The best part of the lineup isn't good enough to make up for more black holes.

  14. I really don't understand what Hendry is planning to do with CF. All I know is he cannot go into 2007 with the current lineup, as is, minus Jones, and plus Pie, or any other similarly questionable CF possibility. They have to get something out of that position, or, find some improvements at another spot.
  15. EDIT: I should have read the whole article: I'd really like to see Benson dominate the next two games. Go into the playoffs with a bruising back in full stride, and Jones should be available for the occasional change of pace.

  17. By the way, isn't it amazing how good a TE can look when there is an actual threat of a WR catching a 15-20 yard pass now and again?
  18. Philly's defense is nothing special. Since the 27-3 post bye victory over the Redskins, they've given up an average of more than 28 points per game (5 games). They are 7th in the NFC in both yards allowed and points per game, which is just above average. They also don't create a large number of turnovers. They have racked up some yards and scored a lot of points. Philly is just like most other NFC contenders, good, but nothing special.
  19. Peter King is the king of overanalyzing. His co-offensive player of the week? Mark Brunell, QB, Washington. What? But, you say, he didn't even play in the Redskins' upset of the Saints. Correct. "He did an incredible job for us last week, and he deserves some credit for this win,'' assistant head coach/defense Gregg Williams said. "Even though he's left-handed, he played Drew Brees perfectly on our scout team all week, giving the defense a great look. He went to the spots on the field Brees would go to, and threw to the spots Brees would throw to.
  20. That happens a lot at hockey games, and I think it's because so few people really understand the sport, and only a tiny fraction ever played it. I consider myself a pretty knowledgable sports fan, and I follow hockey a lot. But I would never pretend to break down the strategy on the ice. I went to a game in Phoenix last year and the vast majority of the crowd were screaming those two phrases the whole game. You might think that's because of hockey being relatively new to AZ, but you get some of the same stuff at Rangers games in NY. Yeah, I like to call it the "I'm an expert" phenomenon. It's apparent in every sport. I'm not sure it's a matter of people thinking they are experts. They go to hockey games wanting to see two things, goals and big hits.

  22. The Bears dominated that game. They relaxed in the 4th quarter, but then controlled the OT period. Anybody who tries to pretend that win involved luck is an idiot. This team has been on cruise control since the Giants game, and has still managed to win 4 of 5. The defense has been plain vanilla for a while now, and the coaches are obviously 100% focused on the playoffs. They say great teams find ways to win games when they don't play their best. The Bears have done that a few times now. They've also destroyed teams along the way. I'm going to enjoy watching this team blow through the NFC competition in the playoffs while the experts keep doubting their ability. I guarantee you that a 12-2 Dallas team with an up and down young QB would be in the indesputable champion of the NFC in the eyes of these people. None of this crap matters though. What matters are the games, and the Bears are going to win at least 4 more this season.
  23. As long as Lee, Ramirez, Soriano and Barrett play full seasons, I can't think of any permutation among all the mentioned possibilities that could make the offense as bad as last year's. And I think everyone, including Floyd himself, knows he is at best a half time player. If they tried to play him the majority of the time, he'd break down. I'm not saying it would be very likely, it's just possible. If Floyd got 350 PA and had a 765 OPS, and Murton got the other 350 and had a 795, then the Cubs overall LF production would end up flat, or barely above 2006. Pie could easily be significantly worse than Pierre next year. Soriano could conceivably be no better than Jones last year. SS could be as bad, 2B could be the same. 1B is a mortal lock to be better, but the question is how much, and then, what happens at C and 3B. Both Barrett and Blanco had career years in 2006. If both regress a little and Ramirez misses a little time and/or takes a step back, the lineup could conceivably be worse. And none of those things is an outlandish statement either. I doubt that happens. I think they have all but guaranteed improvement. All I'm saying is depending on how the OF falls out, there's a chance they'd be as bad.
  24. From 2000-2005 Floyd's OPS against RHP was well over 900. If he repeats that, he'd be a big addition to the team. In 2006, it was 765. If he does that again, and plays over Murton a lot, and Pie starts in CF, this lineup could actually be worse than last years.
  25. It's the Cubs, nothing makes sense.
