  1. Red Sox are making out like bandits. Then I have to assume the deal breaker was the Boston was willing to accept the least amount of cash.
  2. The past? It was as recent as last season, after winning the series. Part of having that huge payroll is the ability to overpay and get away with it. I wouldn't do that if at all possible, but contrary to public perception and media theory, Boston and NYY can't get every sure thing.
  3. From what I have, the Yankees are done paying Vazquez, so he'd be due 24 mil over the next two years(11.5/12.5). However, I'm not positive that this is the case. From this site: NY Yankees to pay $9M ($3M/year) of 2005-07 salaries That would leave $8.5m and $9.5 in 2006 and 2007 for whatever team he plays for.
  4. Are you kidding me? He lost 150 OPS points from 2003 to 2004, marking the second lowest OBP and OPS of his career at the time. He was terrible for a very long stretch in 2004.
  5. I would have taken Blalock no doubt. However, my bet is Boston was more willing to take on financial obligations than others. And when your motivation is cash , sometimes it's not the wisest thing to turn down the money.
  6. I don't know about that. They signed Renteria clearly hoping for a rebound year. They signed Millar hoping to a return to the 900 OPS range. They clearly had rebound in mind when they got Damon. Ortiz wasn't necessarily a rebound, but they were expecting an emergence after a few years of stagnant mediocrity got him non-tendered in Minnesota. Bellhorn was a cheaper rebound project. I would call both the Clement and Wade Miller signings as hope for a rebound type acquisition. I'm sure they'll try and flip him if they can. But they aren't going to eat all the money and get back nothing. Boston can find value in a guy like Lowell, and part of that value might be hoping for a rebound.
  7. Maybe they will, but Florida isn't the type of team that can live with a Kerry Wood like contract situation, paying uber millions for an injured pitcher. Josh has never thrown 200 innings, his career high was the 179 from this year, which was also his best season. He's 2 years from free agency, but they might have decided to minimize their risk and get the best they could get now, before paying big arbitration money, and instead of risking he gets injured again this coming season and has less trade value. A team in dire financial straits has a greater need to spread the wealth around when it comes to player contracts. They could have afforded Beckett this season, but perhaps not the following season, and almost certainly not from 2008 on. And whenever you can get rid of that big committment to an underperforming player like Lowell, you do it.
  8. I'm not sure Lowell is useless to a team like Boston. His 2005 numbers were abysmal, but prior to that he was as good or better than Bill Mueller, and, I believe he was better defensively. They could still turn around and deal Lowell to a team desperate for 3B help, especially if they eat some salary.
  9. That is a very interesting move. I'm still wondering who is orchestrating the Red Sox moves with no GM in place. Are they asking prospective GM's what they would do in their interviews, and then using those ideas?
  10. How easy it to find 4 or 5 starters? Again, Lester has a much higher ceiling then Williams. Check out who are the most coveted SP this offseason, it's the guys who have the highest ceilings. And Glendon Rusch.
  11. I wonder how many prospects take part in that every year. I can't imagine it's too many, which would indicate the organization is very happy with Sean right now. Then again, they are sending him to Peoria.
  12. I'd set the line at 18/1 that Pie becomes a 5 time all star or better. Perhaps if he was traded to a lesser team, the odds would be lower, and he's the type of guy who could be the mandatory pick from a team based solely on all his tools and flashiness rather than production.
  13. I choose not to entertain thoughts of Neifi as a starter until it happens. Ignorance is bliss, which is not to say I want to be ignorant, rather I just want to ignore Neifi for as long as possible.
  14. That would be my preference as well. But when you go down the list of options, I wouldn't complain at all of Marcus came and played 2nd and they got an impact RF via another route.
  15. A bowl committee that is interested in drawing in crowds and ratings from different parts of the country. PSU/ND is a good football game, but the big bowls typically try and get something other than a regional matchup. I think they'd rather see PSU or ND face a west coast or southern team if at all possible.
  16. I think Hill at the minimum is a solid bench option, certainly much better than Macias at 2-3 times the minimum, and Neifi at 7 times the minimum. Is Loretta due back there starting at 2B?
  17. I sacrificed Enrique Wilson, but Modzilla wasn't pleased for some reason. Tough to impress him/her. Oh well, my dream of being a moderator is deferred :( Edit: Actually I think moderation powers are determined in sort of a BCS-style system. The moderators vote on a top 25 poster list each week. Also, the admins have their own poll too. Their polls are weighted with a group of other rating systems, including quality post points, humerous point posts, etc. Finally, the number of times a poster is warned either in a thread or via PM for pushing the line of offensiveness is added to their overall score. The persons with the lowest score when an extra moderator is needed have a faceoff in a hidden forum where they must argue a Cub related topic the best. After a two week period to argue, the thread is closed and a new moderator is determined. Wow. All I had to do is finish in the top 12 and I got an at large berth. It pays to travel well. You know you have to share that BCS money with the rest of the "sick and tired of ESPN.com" conference.
  18. Now THAT is messed up. These bowls should have to give preference to conference winners Technically they are Co-Big Ten champs. But i agree with your point. Is that really true? They have identical records, but PSU won head-to-head. It is technically true. From the Bigten.org website: They share the title, but PSU gets the automatic BCS bid because of the head to head win. In the old days they would have secured the Rose Bowl bid.
  19. Yeah no. Your scouts would have to have some of the most glowing reports possible about Wells' pending explosion to justify that deal. Wells to me is no more than a Corey with a clue, but not an exceptionally large clue. Vernon does appear to be a prototypical Hendry kind of guy though I can't see him dealing Pie for him. Toronto signed him to a semi-reasonable contract and don't appear to be in a cost-cutting mode, but they do apparantly want some pitching. I'm not a Wells fan, but I wouldn't die if he was the Cubs CF next year. And since I've said before that I'd be interested in the Cubs going after Hinske for the bench if Toronto wants to shed that contract, perhaps there is a deal to be made.
  20. What if he factored Abreu's contract into the equation? Would it still be proof of players gaining momentum? With only 2 years on the deal, it's pretty difficult to justify knocking Abreu down the list of potential candidates. The one thing the Cubs have going in their favor is the money they have to spend. If Abreu was a free agent and was willing to sign for 2/30 right now, I'd be on that deal in a heartbeat, an that club option in 2008 also gives the team a chance to keep him for three years without risking a longterm deal in his late 30's. I started this Abreu talk months ago, and I'm extremely happy that it's picked up some steam this offseason. From a baseball standpoint it doesn't make sense for Philly to trade him, but they are in a "we need to change what we're doing mode" and might just be willing to go in another direction by trading Abreu. There's not one prospect in the system that I'd refuse to deal for Abreu. And if you know my history of prospect love that means a lot.
  21. I can't believe how incredibly wrong I was about this game. I would have bet on the Panthers and given the points without much hesitation. The Bears had a chance of course, but I assumed Carolina would still win. I really had no idea the DLine had that kind of game in them. Unbelievable dominance.
  22. Is that the "you have 10 days to trade him" move? If another team picks him up, he has to stay on their 25 man roster the whole year (either that, or the DL). If he doesn't stick, he gets returned to us, and the team gets a little money out of the deal. I know that's how the Rule 5 works, but I was wondering about the DFA, rather than being outrighted to Iowa.
  23. ESPN.com was showing that all last night, and I about died. 3/11 isn't great, but it's much more feasible.
  24. Definitely. It's his only chance to make it, and I think he can.
